The Spy Who Coded is a first-person-coder where the player must solve short software development problems to unlock short videos. We are planning to leverage our iPad development experience from last year with our new video experience to create an awesome experience that will encourage more people to practice software development.

Here is a link to the iPad game that we created last year - Mini Musical Star. In this game, the player gets an opportunity to star in one of the two 15-minute musicals that Christian wrote. The first musical, When You're Here, was written in 2010. It is about a boy that has a typical relationship with his younger sister until one day his sister gets sick and has to go to the hospital. When You're Here is the first musical that Christian wrote, scored, and stared in. The musical was put on by Kids Performing and again by Music Theater Limited for a total of 3 shows. The second musical, Buy One Give One, was written by Christian in 2011 and was Shannon's first staring role in a musical. She is in every scene but one. This musical was also put on by Kids Performing Academy of the Arts and an encore performance was performed for charity at the local YMCA in December 2011. Christian was commissioned in August 2012 to develop his first full length (ok it's only 60 minutes) musical - Tropical Christmas. That musical is still in production.

The second iPad application that we are contributing to is SingPath Mobile. It is a game that helps people to practice software languages. The initial version of the game allows you to solve drag-n-drop software development problems, but we are extending the game in November 2012 to include video scenes that will play between the different levels just like we talk about in our Kickstarter video. The Spy Who Coded will be the downloadable story that you can play after playing through the included story.

Here is a link to a demo movie that shows what the integrated experience might look like. The game video in this demo video is just of someone typing on the screen, but you should get the idea. We will be replacing these typing videos with the movie scenes that we will be shooting.

Risks and challenges

This game will be playable from the iPad version of SingPath and in the future from the SingPath.com website. There may be some unexpected issues with Apple accepting the finished game for download. There may also be some unexpected issues with getting JQuery to properly pop-up the videos at the appropriate point in the game, but so far all the HTML and Javascript code seems straightforward. There could also be unexpected issues with editing the scenes and exporting them in the proper format. Christian has experience with iMovie and shooting video clips outdoors. He believes he will be able to edit most of the scenes on his MacBook. So the real risks are ensuring that the storyline will be captivating and that the sound will be good for all of the scenes shot on location. We will have a few grown-ups watch the videos we shoot and edit to ensure that they are high enough quality before we release the game.
