Let's Show Off North Dakota In All Its Fully Interactive, 360° Glory!
North Dakota is a state of breathtaking beauty, rugged terrain, peaceful vistas, unique attractions, and the friendliest and hardest working people in the world. This project is going to take some of that to the rest of the world through fully interactive, 360° virtual reality (VR) experiences.
As a campaign backer, you’ll be involved from the beginning. You could even help decide which attractions, businesses, communities and destinations we feature in a series of at least 10 VR experiences. You’ll also be able to show off North Dakota to your family, friends, people across the country, and potential new friends oceans away.
We hope you’ll join us in our excitement for this project. To help you get there, we invite you to take the state of North Dakota for a "spin" by interacting with the imagery below. We're also super excited to tell you how you can help us create many more of these experiences to showcase our state in a way that’s never been possible before.
North Dakota Virtual Reality Experiences?
We love seeing people's eyes light up when they try on a VR headset for the first time. We frequently hear that our content brings back a memory of something they experienced as a kid, like Dakota Thunder (World's Largest Buffalo) in Jamestown or the blockhouses or earth lodges at Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park. And the best part is, opportunities for creating engaging and meaningful 360°/VR experiences are as deep and vast as our imaginations.
We’re convinced the wonders of this state, experienced through 360° imagery on your phone, tablet, PC/Mac or VR headset, are the most compelling way to encourage people to visit North Dakota. And if this project encourages even just a handful of us who have lived here most or all our lives to rediscover and reminisce on our own North Dakota experiences, well, that's the icing on the cake!
What Will We Create?
Our objective is to develop a series of North Dakota virtual reality experiences that will be the envy of every other state. If we reach our funding goal, we’ll be able to create at least 200 premium 360° photosphere scenes for a minimum of 10 attractions all across the state.
Every 360° photo we take as part of this campaign will be uploaded in three different places:
- Google Street View: We conservatively estimate the Google uploads from this project alone will result in over 1 million annual views for North Dakota attractions
- Social Media: We will be building Facebook 360° posts and albums. We will also be creating fun and interesting derivative works such as little planets on our Instagram feed.
- Immersive WebVR Content (this is the real "WOW" factor): We will create multiple engaging VR experiences with navigation paths and a couple other surprises that quite simply are going to amaze you!
Here are some of the top contenders for public attractions we would like to include:
- International Peace Garden
- Knife River Indian Villages
- Garrison Dam
- Lake Sakakawea State Park
- Maah Daah Hey Trail
- Lake Metigoshe State Park
- Our other Impressive Roadside Animal Friends (Tommy the Turtle, Wally the Walleye, and all the others)
- Much, much more!
How Will We Decide?
The list above is just a skeleton; we need your help to add more meat to the bones!
If you know of an attraction that would make for an awesome VR experience, tell us! We’ll accept suggestions via email (firstname.lastname@example.org), on our Facebook page and within this Kickstarter campaign. Better yet, share this campaign with the people in charge of your favorite North Dakota attractions and ask them to help spread the word!
We’ll update our "ballot" of eligible attractions throughout the funding period and will keep you up to speed as our list of possible projects grows.
Voting will commence on the list of suggestions at the end of the funding period. Backers who have funded at one of the "Collaborator" levels will be eligible to submit their votes for what content we create. That’s 200 photospheres spread across a minimum of 10 attractions throughout the state.
If we exceed our goal, we're going to get to more locations and create even more virtual reality experiences! Stay tuned!
Your voice will be heard! Although we are allowing campaign supporters in our top three levels to select a project, those projects will be created in addition to the minimum of 200 photospheres/10 attractions selected through the voting process.
You determine your engagement level in this campaign.
Everyone who contributes will get a first look inside some amazing VR experiences for their phone, tablet and Mac/PC. The more you give, the more engagement and direction you’ll have. Back the campaign at $50 and higher levels and you’ll receive a premium cardboard virtual reality headset for fully immersing yourself in these North Dakota VR adventures simply by inserting your phone! (A headset is not required to view these ND VR experiences... its just a really cool way to step inside the pictures.)
Support the campaign at one of the top three reward levels and you or your team will be able to name an attraction, business or destination, or even an entire community, that will receive our 360° and virtual reality content management services for an entire year, (as well as ongoing/indefinite hosting on Google, Facebook and other social media channels).
If we exceed our initial goal, we have a variety of stretch goals planned.
We won't tell you now... that would spoil the surprise. Just know that we’re completely committed and focused on creating more content, enabling more interactivity, and extending hosting of our content to continue promoting North Dakota through VR far into the future.
Let's turn North Dakota's amazing spaces into its greatest online assets!
Why Be More Colorful?
Be More Colorful is a 100% North Dakota-founded, 100% North Dakota-owned and 100% North Dakota-operated business. We are working to build a national brand for virtual reality content management services and are off to a great start from a visibility standpoint. Our next goal is to start showcasing all the amazing spaces our great state has to offer!
There are a lot of different ways to create 360° photographs and dozens, if not hundreds, of places to upload 360° content. Our experience, knowledge and the industry partnerships we’ve established with some of the best virtual reality solutions in the world set us apart.
We use natural light photography and a sophisticated workflow process that takes between 20 and 100 raw images to create spherical panorama scenes that are the closest you can get to actually viewing a place in person.
Bottom line: we create incredibly immersive and engaging VR experiences that are second to none.
One Good Turn Of The Sphere Deserves Another
We hope you’ll consider contributing to the creation of these North Dakota virtual reality adventures. Please share this campaign and our passion for North Dakota with everyone you know... from those who love our state to people who have barely heard of it before.
The best compliment we could receive is hearing that a VR experience we created inspired you to embark on a new adventure in North Dakota or relive an old one. We’re committed to building something truly epic, and humbled that you are considering becoming a part of that.
With warmest regards,
The Be More Colorful Team
Risks and challenges
There are minimal risks to this project as we have already created thousands of premium 360° images for a growing list of clients across the country. Our process is proven and has earned us international recognition. Now it's time to focus our refined skill set here in North Dakota.
There is a risk that the cardboard headsets will not arrive by September, but this is a very small probability since we have several sources we can turn to for these units. We will keep you in the loop throughout the month of August on the status of your cardboard virtual reality headset(s).
There are certainly unique challenges presented with this project. First and foremost is the weather. We will only be able to create spectacular outdoor images when the weather is cooperative. Luckily, the months of August and September tend to be awesome opportunities for summer photos. We will do everything in our power to plan photo-shoots during optimal outdoor conditions.
Another area of risk is that views of the photos we create may not result in the increased visibility for North Dakota we are anticipating. While this is a possibility, we are seeing a strong upward trend with visibility of our content across all platforms we use, and you as a contributor can have a significant impact by sharing our posts and showing off these spaces with your sweet, sweet cardboard headset (should you be a contributor at those levels).
Regarding the cardboard headsets, they are compatible with MOST devices. The operating system will not matter, but you do need a mobile device that runs an HTML5-compatible browser and has a screen that is 6 inches or smaller.
Another significant challenge could be obtaining permission to get photographs from a particular business or private location. All photographs will only be taken in locations where we have the legal right to do so, which means if a property owner not want to allow us access to a private location, we must respect their wishes. If you are a contributor at one of the top three levels, we would strongly encourage getting written permission for us to engage with a private business owner (or landowner) as part of this project. If your selected location will not allow us on site to create this imagery, we reserve the right to find an alternative, mutually agreed upon location within North Dakota.
Our team’s safety is paramount. We will not be able to take photographs in areas or at events that might put one of our team members in danger. These decisions are the sole discretion of Be More Colorful. If that kind of situation presents itself, we will do everything we can to capture equivalent imagery while maintaining safe production conditions for our team.
We will do everything we can to have all shooting wrapped up before the end of this summer, but weather and location accessibility will be determining factors in our timelines. Should any photographs not be completed prior to the end of the summer (September 2017), we will commit to taking those photographs over the fall/winter (if appropriate), or we will wait until spring/summer 2018 to shoot those additional images. Any images we create will be hosted indefinitely on Google and all our social media channels, and for a minimum of one year on our paid hosting services.
Any business owners or communities where photos are taken may or may not decide to continue services with us after the first year. We will not pressure anyone into any ongoing service contract if they do not see value. All photos we take will remain on Google and Facebook regardless of their status on our premium (paid) hosting solutions, and all business owners/communities will receive copies of our finished files that they may use indefinitely for their own marketing purposes. These photos are being created to be viewed and accessible by everyone.
We have attempted to provide a comprehensive list of risks and challenges, but there may be others that are not yet on our radar. We're actively striving to identify and mitigate other such situations. If you have questions about this campaign, please contact us at email@example.com .Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
