About

  • A game of Gangs and Mobster

Welcome to Chicago!

Become a real gangster from the roaring twenties, create your business (in a more or less legal way...), corrupt the police and take the control of Chicago!

Bucks, bullets and flowers is a game where 3 to 6 players will assume the role of the most important gangster who lived in Chicago in the Twenties. We are in the prohibition era, shady characters began to prowl around the city, taking control of various commercial activities.

Who are they? What do they want?

They have curious names, some of them of clear Italian origin. It is evident that they do not have peaceful intentions, setting the streets on fire with violent clashes at the sound of Thomson SMGs bursts, trading in alcohol and aiming to the complete control of the city!

Players will have to contend Chicago using experience points, money, event cards and location / specific characters to neutralize the activities of opposing organizations, to take control of the most interesting (illegal?) business activities and to recruit the best “crime specialists" of the time.

If the business will be more prosperous, other gangsters come to threaten your rule, while the police, more or less corrupt, would tries to keep the situation under control. A perfect blend of history and strategic planning that can lead to unpredictable sudden changes of the game situation.

The basic version will feature two-dimensional components, but various supplements will be released that will give the game a real 3D city feeling with buildings inspired by the skyscrapers of the time and over a hundred of miniatures that will represent gangsters and mobsters of the time.  So what are you waiting for? Take control of Chicago and show who you really are!

  • Component of the game

The Chicago's map is subdivided in districts. Each district contains a number of contacts ranging from 2 to 5. The amount of contacts represents how large the district is. There are 12 districts:

  • 1 Downtown (5 contacts)
  • 2 Upperclass District (4 contacts each)
  • 3 Lowerclass District (3 contacts each)
  • 6 Outskirts (2 contacts each)
Map
Map

Contacts are either Mobsters (M)  – tiles with black back - or Locations (L)  – tiles with brown back - and are shuffled together in the facedown contacts deck.

Mobsters (M) and Bosses have 4 characteristics, with the value ranging from 0 to 5:

  • Gun (Gun): assassination's skills
  • Family (Fam): influence skills
  • Robbery (Rob): thievery skills
  • Stealth (STH): deception skills
Locations (L): the locations that had a pivotal role during Chicago mobwar. Each L has up to 3 earning levels, that can be:

  • Monetary: they yield money
  • Hideouts: they grant bonus STH
  • Monetary and Hideouts: both the above

The contacts, M and L, are shuffled together and the backs are always visible. This reflects the fact that in the ‘20ies Gangs always knew which location was going to open or who was going to come to the city.

TOKENS

The tokens with a squared shape depicting hats of different colors represent the influence Clans have in the Chicago districts. The tokens with the police hat represent the policemen (Ps) that try to fight crime.

The Bosses are the chiefs of the Gangs and are represented by the bigger boards. Bosses are the most important personalities in the game and represent the chiefs of the most influent Gangs in the organized crime in the Chicago of 1920.

Each board shows the name of the Boss, his characteristics and, eventually, some special abilities or some disadvantages. The also show the starting contacts and the starting money with which they start the game. The bosses are represented in their actions by the colored token with the number “1”. Each Boss acts like a M, but is more important.

Having the Boss alive or dead changes the winning conditions. If your Boss is alive you win with 2.000.000 ApB, if he’s dead you need 2.500.000 ApB to win.

Police Chief (PC) – cards with blue back – they represent the chiefs of the Police, more or less corrupt, who try to avoid the spreading of the criminality, without forgetting to accept bribes once in a while.

The cards of the Police Chief (PC) have the blue back and represent the chiefs of the police, more or less corrupt, during the Chicago of ‘20ies.

The cards show the name of the PC, his abilities or disadvantages and a table with a value of corruption ranging from 0 to 9. At the beginning the game, PC cards are shuffled together, with the exception of the card Edward K. Jarecki, and the first PC card is drawn. Then, all other cards are shuffled together.

Each time the corruption level reaches 10 or more (by Gang actions or action cards effects) it cannot be decreased or increased anymore during that turn.

At the beginning of the next turn, the PC is discarded and another is drawn from the deck, to which a corruption value of 0 is assigned. During the turn in which the PC is discarded, police actions are not possible. Trials are always possible.

ACTION CARDS

Action cards – cards with the red back – they represent the modifications to actions or additional free actions.

The action cards are the cards with the red back and represent free actions, reactions to other actions or action modifiers. The action cards show the name, the type (action or reaction), the amount of corruption that the card modifies with its effect.

EVENT CARDS

Event cards – cards with the dark brown back –  represent historical events that happened in Chicago from 1920 to 1930.

They are drawn at the beginning of each turn and represent the events that shaped the era around ‘20ies. The event cards show the name, the duration of the event (permanent, instantaneous or 3 turns) and its effect. At the beginning of each turn, one event card is drawn and one time token (represented by clocks) is removed, if present, from an already active event card.

  • Rules of game

Each player rules, as Boss, one of the Chicago's Clan or commands the Police in the years of Prohibition.

To win a game, if you are a Boss, you must earn more power than the other Gangs. The power in '20 means bucks, so the first who gets, steals or earns a great amount of dollars win the game: 2.000.000 Apokalypse Bucks (ApB) if your Boss is alive; 2.500.000 ApB otherwise.

To win a game, if you are Police Chief, you must stop rampant corruption spreading all over the city by obtaining one of the following situations:

  •  All (but Black Hand) bosses are killed;
  • One Boss is found guilty on a trial;
  • No payment to grow corruption in the turn is fulfilled.

Each turns unfolds in the following sequence:

  • 1. Each Boss draw action cards until he/she has 5.
  • 2. Placement of the Gang’s influence tokens earned the previous turn (the already placed influence tokens cannot be moved). The total influence is the sum of the Family value of all Ms of a Gang and of that Gang’s Boss.
  • 3. Drawing of the event card and/or removal of tokens from an already present(active) event.
  • 4. In each district, Ms/Ls card drawn from the contact deck are added until the maximum capacity of the district is reached.
  • 5. Ls earning are calculated for each Gang.
  • 6. The PC places (or removes) Ps on (or from) the map in relation to the current corruption level.
  • 7. Gangs actions in order from the one with the lower influence to the one with the highest influence.
  • 8. Pc actions.
  • 9. Processes and commitments for trials: jailed Ms since at least one turn can be judged for ultimate jailing. If a Boss is found guilty, the PC wins the game.
  • 10. Maintenance: each Gang pays 10.000 ApB for each one of that Gang’s M; if the available money doesn’t cover all the Ms, the unpayed Ms are discarded and reshuffled in the contacts deck.
  • 11. Check for Gangs’ victory conditions: the Gangs need to have 2.000.000 ApB if the Gang’s Boss is still alive, 2.500.000 ApB otherwise.
  • About the Police Chief

The actions of the PC have a cost in Ps: they are removed from the district in which you want to act. It is possible to perform actions only if at least the correct amount of Ps is present in that district. The possible actions are:

  • Jail a M: you choose a M in a district. You remove an amount of Ps in that district equal to the Family value of the M or of the Boss. If the M/boss is arrested with a mandate, the jailing lasts indefinitively (until release through cards or discharge during trial), otherwise it lasts up to 3 turns.
  • Raid in a L: you choose a district and a L (in that district) that earned something during an earning phase. You remove 5 Ps from that district. All the Ms in that L are jailed (same rules for jailing as above) and the L is discarded.
  • Investigate over illicit affairs: you choose a district. You remove 2 Ps from that district to discard one unaffiliated L and replace it with the next contact from the contacts deck.
  • Control politics: you choose a district. You remove 3 Ps to discard 2 influence of each Gang in that district.
  • Decrease corruption: you remove 5 Ps from any district to decrease the corruption of 1 point. This action can be used only once each turn.

Every time one action has as an outcome at least one drawn P, the PC can react with the following action: Impose a mandate: you can impose a mandate for a M or a Boss who performed the action by removing one P in the district in which that action was performed. This counts as a reaction.

Risks and challenges

We are a little company with bright ideas on games. Pragmatically, the challenge for us is to ship all the products in time, but mainly we want to show that we are a very good game company with our products.

This is our first miniatures game. A such, we want it to be perfect, but obviously things are not always that simple: the risk for us is to build up few pledges and do not reach the sufficient number of copies to product to produce.
