We are Jesse Gelber & Kate Manning, husband and wife vaudeville duo and writers of the new musical Where All The Rivers Go To Sleep. The show follows Cora Covington, a young prostitute in Storyville, the fabled New Orleans red-light district, who falls in love with Apolline Albert, a beautiful Creole woman. Cora draws Apolline into a life of prostitution at one of the district’s most extravagant brothels, servicing the city’s wealthiest and most powerful men, and run by the notoriously cold Madame and voodoo priestess Marie Snow. When Apolline’s husband Joe returns from up North and wants her back, a desperate Cora will do anything to keep her from leaving. She commits a terrible crime, for which she then seeks redemption. In a world where love is a transaction, can it ever be given freely?
We’ll be producing a concert version of the show for this year’s New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF). This special event will feature a 12 piece orchestra playing a score reflective of American music as operetta, ragtime, tango, and blues meet in a brothel at the dawn of jazz.
Our wonderful team for this concert version will include:
Director Randal Myler (Tony Award nominee, It Ain’t Nothin’ But The Blues)
Musical Director Dan Lipton (The Last Ship)
General Manager Dan Whitten (Producer, Jacques Brel, Jersey Boys)
Participating in NYMF is a huge opportunity for us that we hope will help move the show forward to its next phase of development, and ultimately move us toward a full production some time in the future. Many other musicals have used the respected industry showcase NYMF provides as as a stepping stone towards off-Broadway, and even Broadway, runs.
Risks and challenges
Funding this project is going to cost us well over $10,000. So while we've funded a portion of it ourselves, we need your help to make the rest a reality. Money we raise will go to pay for:
-NYMF participation fees that cover theater rental and much more
-piano rental, equipment rental
-stipends for the cast, orchestra, and production team
-advertising, media, photography, etc.
We are so excited about this project and so hopeful that participating in NYMF will be a meaningful step in the show's development. Please help us see it through by making a donation!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
