About this project
Deciding to Write the Book...
Fans of The Partridge Family, including myself, have always wanted a well-researched book that covers both the TV show and the music. At one point, I went so far as to try and convince a few writer friends of mine to do it. The thought had never occurred to me to attempt it myself. Until...
March 29, 2009..
I was working at a theatre in Pennsylvania and we booked David Cassidy for a concert there. It was very successful, and David was incredibly kind. A perfect experience, so to speak.
Afterwards, I got to thinking, "hmmm...I wonder IF...."
...and you can see where it has gone since then!
What's in the Book?
When We're Singin' The Story of The Partridge Family and Their Music, was exhaustively researched for over 5 years, and includes over 100 brand new interviews! New stories and memoirs are shared by the cast, the producers, nearly all the surviving musicians who actually played on the albums, the real background singers, nearly every surviving songwriter who wrote songs specifically for The Partridge Family, including Mike Appel (producer of Bruce Springsteen), Terry Cashman & Tommy West (producers of Jim Croce), Bobby Hart (producer/songwriter for The Monkees) L. Russell Brown, Paul Anka, Rupert Holmes, Adam Miller, Steve Dossick, Diane Hildebrand, Danny Janssen, John Michael Hill, Bill Dorsey, David Price, and many, many more!
In an exclusive first-time story on the former Bell Records label, we have interviewes the former executives who have never been interviewed about The Partridge Family. Also included are stories from former staff members of The Music Agency that created all the advertising graphics and fun album covers; Sandy D'Vore, the animator who created the video portion of the show's opening theme and credits; Casting Director Renee Valente, Writers Dale McRaven (who went on to Mork and Mindy) writer/producers William S. Bickley (Love Boat, Happy Days) and Larry Rosen were all interviewed. Directors Ralph Senensky and executive Producer Bob Claver (who started out on Captain Kangaroo) were both interviewed in great detail. Shirley Jones offered up 2 and a half hours in interview time! Series creator Bernard Slade was interviewed, (The Flying Nun, Bewitched).
We even have "lost" interviews with the late Wes Farrell (music producer) and Tony Romeo ("I Think I Love You" songwriter) that were conducted by music historian/author/musician Ken Sharp who graciously offered these interviews for use in this book, and the last in-depth interview with Dave Madden and Mike Melvoin are also included.
There are tons of surprises for even the most die-hard of fans plus a track by track commentary of every song (released and unreleased) in The Partridge Family catalog as told by the songwriters who wrote them!
If you thought you knew everything about The Partridge Family, this book will surprise you.
Henry Diltz Photos Included!
Also planned are 50 pages of photos from the archives of Cash Box magazine and other sources--most notably the Henry Diltz collection of photos from his personal archives! Diltz was Cassidy's personal photographer both on and off the set of The Partridge Family! We also have photos from the private collection of the late, great Dave Madden!
The Funding Goal
Our goal is to fund the production of a collectible 9" x 6" hard back book to commemorate the 45th anniversary of The Partridge Family. The funding goal will be used to cover the costs involved in the minimum number of books for an initial printing, legal fees, copy editing fees, graphic design and layout-fees, to name just a few.
Any additional funding that goes above our set goal will be put towards increasing the photo pages and book quantities available. It will also go towards some of the fees initially waived by our graphic artists, attorney, copy editor and several others who worked relentlessly at making this project a success.
