About this project
In these times , everyone needs a 5 Year Plan. How can we create a social architecture where everyone wins? How can we serve those most desperately in need while remaining true to our nature as artists? The 5 Year Plan is a DIY artist action in honor of Mahatma Gandhi, to benefit Doctors Without Borders (MSF).
5Year Plan (5YP) is a handmade collection of 32 artworks by 32 contemporary artists. The artworks are printed onto hand-loom cotton and bound into fabric books in rural India. This project will employ scores of people from farmers and weavers to printers and artists, and raise about $40,000 for MSF. (All 100% donated!)
Contributing artists include Yoko Ono, Francesco Clemente, Donald Baechler, Chris Martin, Julie Doucet, Pushpa Kumar, Tim Wehrle, Alpana Bawa and many brilliant lesser known artists. The project is fluxus in spirit, activist in intent, and inclusive over exclusive. An edition of 65 copies will be signed by all the artists, along with 300 unsigned copies.
Plastic bags not only destroy the ecology, they also destroy economies. Millions of rural villagers in India grow and weave their own cotton by hand into khadi cloth. Khadi products were the backbone of Gandhi's program of self-sufficiency, hand-made and locally produced goods, it was the primary symbol of the non-violent independence movement. One of the wonderful things made from khadi are jhola bags, they are 100% handmade shoulder-bags perfect for daily use, the sides are printed with interesting artwork and Gandhian sayings. They are a recognized symbol of village self-reliance, non-violence, and of the intellectual and poet.
Your donation to 5 Year Plan employs scores of villagers and artists in India, will help us raise $40,000 for Doctors Without Borders (100% of profit), and will create a unique work of art for you to enjoy. In the 5 Year Plan we all win together.
This unique edition is a remarkable value to collectors and art lovers in general. Pre-sale prices are half of the post production price.
Many Art Libraries and Museums have pledged to purchase the 5 Year Plan book upon completion. Yoko Ono has posted the project on her website, http://imaginepeace.com/news/archives/8563
Please help make our dream a reality.
Thank you, Aaron Sinift
