The Project so far

Photographer Tom Dingley started his #Outcome project a couple of years ago, to photograph LGBT people with the attributes of their everyday life – their work, or their interests; and holding a picture of themselves as a child. You can see some of the images Tom has already collected here, and see Tom at work here

The message is: No matter how hard it is growing up, no matter who you were, you become who you become, and you are amazing.

Tom has exhibited the ongoing output of the project a number of times, at London Pride, Brighton Pride, Student Pride and as part of Lewisham Council's LGBT History Month celebrations both last year and this. You can see the current Lewisham exhibition up to 29th February in the gallery space at the Broadway Theatre in Catford SE6.

Arachne Press Involvement

Arachne Press have been quietly helping, finding venues for exhibitions and subjects to be photographed, because we think this is an important and valuable project, as well as being rather beautiful. And we want to help it spread wide and far, but exhibitions are bulky and short lived, and on line is ok, but you have to know to look for it, and the best way WE know of reaching people is via a book. We have a track record with 10 books to our name over the past 3 years, and many events including an art exhibition and an all day festival.

Purpose

Tom's reasons for doing the project are to provide young LGBT people with role models for life beyond adolescent angst, uncertainty and bullying, which means we need to keep the book affordable, to ensure it reaches the people we are aiming it at, as well as people who will buy it as the work of art it undoubtedly is.

Challenge

All well and good, but predictably the majority of the people coming forward to get involved were youngish white men, so we set Tom a challenge – 100 photographs: 50% women,at least 20% ethnic minority, a better range of ages, people with disabilities and as many Transfolk as were willing to get involved, and we’d do the book.

Tom has until 1st April to hit that target. If he does, (he will, he's at 80 portraits already) we’ll publish the book on 11th October (International Coming Out Day).

The Book

We NEED your help. Colour photograph printing is expensive to get sufficiently good quality, and we want this book to be REALLY special. That means we have to be picky with the paper too, so that there isn't bleed through from one image to the next and so on. £2,500 will cover our printing costs (plus Kickstarter fees and costs for producing your perks) for a 168 page book in 'Royal' format, so roughly the size of a standard hardcover, although this will have a paper cover, to keep costs down..

Draft cover, we are aiming at Matt, with UV spot on the images

The book will contain 80 full page portraits, with a small amount of text about each of the subjects on the facing page.

Beyond the book - launch, travelling exhibition and slide show for schools

We have a number of 'stretch' targets if we meet the initial funding target.

We can fund the launch exhibition in a central London gallery for a further £2000, We'll need a few hundred more for the actual launch party. for the launch exhibition we plan to have as many of the portraits as possible, hopefully all of them printed up in A1 size so roughly life sized for the ones that aren't full length. We want people to really meet our subjects 'eye to eye'. This means we need a big space. The sooner we raise the money the sooner we can book and secure a great space.

We hope to expand the launch exhibition into a travelling exhibition to visit colleges, schools libraries and community centres, and anyone else who'll have us, around the UK, setting up a studio day at each location to add to the project. that will take easily another £2000, what with transport and Tom's time. There is even a possibility of taking it to Europe.

We also plan to create a downloadable slideshow style version of the book (as an alternative to an e-book) which we hope schools will use for Social Science courses. This is relatively cheap to do, but to do it properly will be time-consuming.

Making it extra pretty

If you go really overboard and give us LOTS of money,we'll be able to pay for a classy cover with spot UV (shiny bits) in crucial places.

Thank you for reading this far. We really, really, hope you are inspired to support us.

Risks and challenges

We are confident that if we get the funding we can bring this project to fruition. Arachne have a track record in publishing and have even run an art exhibition before. Tom is experienced at hanging exhibitions and negotiating with galleries. We are really excited about this project.
