About this project
TARGET: $10,000 of $25,000 Estimated Budget
Soccer is the world’s most popular sport. According to recent statistics gathered by FIFA, 265 million people are playing soccer. The United States has the second largest player participation by country at nearly 25 million. Ten times that of Argentina. And yet, no one would compare the two countries as being close to sharing the same level of passion for soccer. What’s missing in the United States is exposure.
Largely unknown to the general sports public is the presence of the United Soccer League and Premier Development League. These semiprofessional and amateur soccer leagues often serve as the launching pad for many young players into the MLS and leagues abroad. The PDL is extremely accessible with 68 teams across the country. What makes this league unique is that most of these players are under 23 years of age and not yet professional soccer players. For the 25 million people playing soccer in this country, this documentary will show them what it takes to pursue the dream of becoming a professional soccer player.
In an effort to help the sport grow in this country, we are seeking to make a cinéma vérité documentary following the players and coaches of the Premier Development League’s Brooklyn Knights soccer team over the course of the 2012 season.
While we hope to grow the sport, we also see this as an opportunity to create a work of exceptional filmmaking. With our cinéma vérité, or observer like approach, we are attempting to make a film that feels like a movie and not a reality TV-show.
The documentary will begin with the preseason. We will witness the players meet one another and begin their training. We’ll watch the coaching staff prepare these players, test them, and form a team built upon values and winning. Never before will we have had the opportunity to observe soccer training and theory from our top development programs in this close of a relationship. We’ll also witness the individuals’ lives. As much as the documentary will be about soccer, it is also about the people who form this team and their day-to-day lives. We will watch as the players face obstacles in their daily lives and pursue their dreams of playing professional soccer. In the background will be New York City – a city full of life and diversity – a universal backdrop for the universal game.
The story of the documentary will evolve as we shoot. New drama will present itself, so the documentary is ready to adapt to the changes that unfold. The spine or plot will remain the outcome of a season, but the subplots will change as they present themselves.
The purpose of this film is to draw more attention to the sport of soccer in the USA. As an avid soccer fan myself, I only came across the PDL by researching possible subjects for a documentary about soccer. If I did not know about this league, lesser fans certainly do not know about it. Soccer is a fantastic sport that draws people of all cultures together, and there is no escaping its growth in this diverse country.
Forty years ago my father was in LA playing soccer with his brother and a group of kids came over to inspect the ball they were using; they had never seen a soccer ball before. The sport has come a long way since then.
I hope this documentary can serve to accelerate the growth of the sport. All sports fans, especially soccer fans and youth players will look to this documentary as evidence to the pervasive influence of soccer in America. I feel like a minority in the American sports community for my love of soccer. This documentary will show us how strong soccer’s presence is in this country through the PDL. It will give the fans a local source to continue their dedication to the sport and to make it known.
Sports fans, especially soccer fans will enjoy this in-depth look to a soccer team where its players are seeking to become professionals from a league right here in the USA. According to a poll conducted by ESPN/Luker released in March 2012, it shows that professional soccer is now the 2nd most popular sport in the USA in the key 12-24 age demographic; passing the MLB, NBA, and NCAA Football.
WE NEED YOU:
We need to raise about $25,000 and our goal is to get at least $10,000 from this kickstarter campaign. We are committing all we have to bring this idea to life. We want this film to look beautiful and really capture the nuances of the game and its players. We are seeking to film with some beautiful cameras – Canon 5D Mark II, which also require a lot of additional gear to maintain smooth and professional qualities. We need to purchase microphones for each of our 3 cameras that we plan to cover the team with. We will need to pay our talented camera operators to make this film the best it can be. We will need to store hundreds of hours of footage on multiple back-up hard drives, which will alone cost over $6,000. Our insurance policy will also run about $1,300. Once finished we will look to add music and hire a composer. The sound will need to be professionally mixed and finished. The picture quality will also need to be enhanced and color corrected. Fortunately for us as a crew, the shoot will only take place over 3 months, and we are each serving multiple roles so we are able to keep the costs low.
How much we are able to raise will determine how much attention we can give to the various aspects. This video will get done with any amount, but the more we have the better we can make it.
What you are actually supporting is a project that will not only be an entertaining documentary about dreams and perseverance, but something that will help promote soccer in this country.
Thank you for your contributions and support!
