We can create a better, sustainable web together!
CoinTent allows you to remove ads from the entire web while still supporting the sites you use the most. That means the choice of how you want to support websites is finally up to you!
It is a $5/mo subscription that is paid-out across the sites you spend the most time with. This way your favorite sites can still make money, create great content, and continue to exist without you having to see ads.
No more ads, no more anonymous tracking – just fast, clean web browsing!
Making sure media websites can survive is critical to the internet
Remember last time you were reading that great article and a video advertisement slid open and started playing? You lost your spot and had to figure out where they hid the stop button. Or, do you always curse when you have to click through to see the “10 best of” list? And do you hate when the article is split across pages, that all take forever to load? Each of these moments is incredibly frustrating, but right now websites are desperate enough to trade-off a bad experience for the ability to make enough money to keep the lights on.
Now imagine, for a moment, that you woke up one morning to find out that your favorite website had to shut down. Or laid-off half of its writers or producers. For some of you, this is already a reality - it's becoming all too common for websites to close down or lay off staff.
Making sure these sites have enough money to exist is crucial, because having access to quality articles, videos, journalism, and other ad-supported content on the web is extremely important to all of us. Without these sites, the internet would not be the source of information, news, and entertainment that makes it so valuable to the world.
But there needs to be another option beyond advertising
Right now, a vast majority of websites depend entirely on advertising to exist. In essence, that means they depend on grabbing your attention in whatever way possible. They then sell that attention and the data that comes with it. So not only does this result in your data and time being sold, but it also means that the actual customer is the advertiser, not you. So the articles and videos are ultimately being made to attract advertisers, not to inform or entertain. This creates misaligned incentives which lead to click bait, lower content quality, and an overall bad user experience.
To sum it up, ads are bad for both you and the websites that depend on them because:
- They slow down your page loads
- They start playing sound or video unexpectedly
- They move the page around when you are reading
- They track your browsing and sell your data to third party providers
- They can infect you with malware without your knowledge
- They encourage clickbait to get views, and reward quantity over quality of content
Supporting sites directly is a better way forward
CoinTent allows you to support sites directly via a subscription that is split among the sites you spend the most time on. This way, you can remove ads from every site you go to while still making sure these sites can thrive.
We know there are other ways out there to block ads without paying, but it’s important to know that just because you aren't paying up front doesn't mean that it's free. Ad blocking companies without a sustainable model sell your data to make money, sell ads themselves (seriously... the biggest ad blocker just launched an ad network!), and extort websites requiring them to pay up for their ads to be shown.
This is a matter of life or death for these sites. Ad blockers are preventing 20% of website traffic from seeing ads - that means one-fifth of a site’s revenue is completely blocked. More and more websites are resorting to blocking out readers who are blocking their ads. They can't pay for their site's required bandwidth, let alone for the writers and producers, if people are not supporting them.
We’re creating the possibility of a better, more sustainable way to be ad-free while supporting great content and websites, because we believe the Internet can be a better place.
CoinTent removes ads on every site you visit while paying out the sites you spend the most time on. Specifically, it is a browser extension you can setup in one click that detects ads before they load and prevents them from loading. It currently will work on the Chrome browser, and we’ll be adding additional browsers and mobile platforms (Apple and Android) in the near future.
CoinTent is available for a $5/mo subscription. The money from your subscription primarily goes to the sites you spend the most time with. We picked that measurement (vs. number of page views or some other value) because we feel it most closely aligns with the value you’re getting from the site.
Demo from the beta:
How are websites paid?
The breakdown of where your subscription goes is:
- 70-75% goes to sites based on the time you spend on them
- 20% goes to CoinTent to allow us to continue improving the product, adding new devices, and expanding to more people
- 5-10% goes to payment processors (depending on payment method)
We also provide you with the option to remove a site you’ve visited from being supported by you, or completely preventing any measurement of which sites you visit (in which case we will distribute the money based on usage across our network, or allow you to pick which sites you want to support manually).
Of course, we will only pay sites who are creating content and distributing content, and from whom we have verified payment and identity information (so we ensure money goes to the right place). Additionally, we will be paying out the total balance of funds that have been collected for websites each month (to ensure both that money isn't just sitting around being useless and that we give more value to the sites who sign-up sooner).
We will depend on our users to help us determine which sites matter and should be supported, and which shouldn't be getting paid. A large part of this will be driven by looking at which sites users spend the most time with along with seeing which sites in aggregate are marked the most by users as "do not support". We have a good initial version of this ready to go, but it will be a process we'll continue to improve and work on with your help. We'll also be using surveys, feedback on email and forums, and other sources to continually improve how we handle payments.
Honestly, this movement only works if there are enough people behind it. For us to make an impact, we need to get enough support from people to be able to pay websites a meaningful amount for the great content they provide.
Kickstarter is by far the best place to go to find a group of people who want to make something possible in the world that couldn't otherwise exist. You can be the first to help create an ad-free web that still supports the sites you love.
We are on Kickstarter to find backers who believe in what we're doing and want to be a part of making it happen! As a thank you, we're offering discounted packages and additional rewards to our backers.
Our team has been together for 3 years, and we’ve been helping websites find different ways to make more money beyond just advertising. Based on the work we've done and conversations we've had with users and websites, we can't wait to launch and start creating a sustainable ad-free web with you.
The ad-free offering is in beta now on Chrome and we are releasing it in early December. This will only be possible thanks to the support of our backers, the help from our beta testers, and the work we've done over the last few years.
Additionally, we will be surveying our backers to help figure out what platforms we support next (Apple, Android, Safari, Firefox, etc.). If we hit our stretch goals, we'll be able to expand to even more platforms sooner.
Why back us now? Three main reasons:
- Make this possible. Without your support now, we won't be able to have a successful launch and grow this into something that can truly make an impact.
- Discounted rates. We're offering backers discounted rates for going ad-free as a thanks to backing us!
- Bonus rewards from partners. We're fortunate to already be working with a bunch of AMAZING sites, several of which have agreed to offering discounts for bonus rewards.
Every backer will get access to an ad-free web on Chrome while supporting the great sites they love! We also have other great rewards:
We started CoinTent 3 years ago because of a frustrating experience one of our founders, Brad, had on a magazine website. He was trying to read what turned out to be an excellent article, written by a talented writer, from a great company, but ended up with a HORRIBLE experience. Pop-up ads, slide down ads, ads around the page, video auto-play ads, text ads in the article. It was crazy... and unfortunately is far to common an experience to this day.
We've been working with websites for the last few years to help them figure out how to create a more sustainable way to create revenue without just depending on more aggressive ads!
Before that, we were working at a mobile game company that made a majority of its money from a small percentage of users who were willing to pay. We decided we wanted to take our experience and skills from the game world and apply them for a cause we care about in the media world - a sustainable business model for making great articles, videos, and other content.
We're a small team who is super passionate about the potential to help websites find a more sustainable model. We are putting our full time, energy, and hearts behind this and we hope you'll join us on the adventure!
Risks and challenges
While there are always some risks for any software project, we do not believe there is a major risk of the Chrome extension shipping on time or at a high quality level. We are a very experienced team, already in our beta with our ad-free solution, and extremely confident in our ability to go live with a polished product within a month of our Kickstarter ending.
The bigger risk really comes from us being able to get off the ground with a critical mass and grow this to have a larger impact. It is crucial that we hit our backer goals to have a base of supporters and a level of compensation that is meaningful to the sites we're helping. The only way this can successfully launch and thrive is if we hit our goals and have backers who care about this cause on day one! From there, we'll be partnering with our backers to continue to find ways to grow to more people and help websites even more. Thanks for all of your support!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
