About this project
This is a film about otherness.
The Sounding is a feature film that, after a long wild journey and a fantastic shoot, is almost ready to be released to the public. Over the last 3 years, an inspiring team of writers, producers, directors, cast and crew have been working to bring this story to life. We're so close, with an anticipated premiere in early 2017, but there are a few things left to do: finalize music, the color and titles, the publicity and artwork, and get ready for the festival circuit and finally distribution! This Kickstarter campaign is to share with you a taste of what we have so far, what we need to get to the end, and to invite you to join us on this journey!
The Sounding is based on a woman's original idea. It is co-written by a woman. Directed by a woman. Designed by women. Produced by a team of women. Stars a woman. And tells the compelling story of an extraordinary woman who dares to live her own authentic life. What better time to celebrate the unique, thrilling talent and unquenchable zest for life that lives in all of us? The Sounding is part mystery, part love story, part drama, part adventure, part tragedy and 100% human story. We are so thrilled to be able to share this original story with you, and inspire you to live your best life. With your help, we'll be able to show this film to the world, and you'll be able to score some amazing rewards! Thank you!
Raised on a remote island by her grandfather Lionel, Liv has never spoken. When Lionel discovers he's dying, he calls his former protege, Michael, to the island and asks him to protect Liv's independence. That night, as Lionel is reading to Liv, his voice fails him. Liv picks up the book of Shakespeare and begins: first reading, then weaving her own language from Shakespeare's words. Michael discovers her speaking and commits her to a psychiatric hospital. She becomes a full-blown rebel in the hospital; her increasing violence threatens to keep her locked up for life. At a time when the world is at a tipping point regarding women's voices, LIV encapsulates that zeitgeist.
Why this film.
- This is a film that is ultimately about otherness, at a time when we desperately need to connect and include the marginalized.
- It is a film about mental illness at a time when in the United States alone our dependence on anti-depressants has more than doubled in the past ten years, and 42.3 million people suffer from some form of mental illness today (that's one in five!).
- It's a film inspired by Oliver Sacks' humanity and curiosity about the mind, and Shakespeare's insights into the human condition.
- And its made by women, about a woman's journey through a male-dominated world. Which is not unlike the journey of a female director. But together we can move that needle in the right direction.
- And finally, our unyielding gratitude. "I can no other answer make but thanks and thanks and ever thanks..." - William Shakespeare
The finish line.
Every penny you generously back us with will be used for finishing the film and in preparation for the festival premiere (we are in the very final stage of post-production, having already shot and edited the film): i.e. title design, music, final mix, final color, DCP creation, poster design, printing, hiring a publicist. We've made every dollar we've spent so far stretch well beyond its means, and we promise to take care of yours especially. And if you'd like more specifics, please ask! You amazing people are bringing this project across the finish line, and we want you by our side in every way possible.

Our Locations. We traveled hundreds of miles to capture the perfect locations for the film! Cast and crew braved the cold as we shot on a remote island twelve miles off the coast of Maine. We basked in the splendor of a private estate on Long Island's North Shore. We told ghost stories while we shot in an abandoned psych ward on Roosevelt Island. The use of these varied and authentic locations brings a raw beauty to The Sounding that will take your breath away!

Risks and challenges
Every creative venture is a risky one - that's what makes them life-affirming and valuable! So we deeply appreciate your taking this leap with us. Great news! At this point, we can assure you, this film will be finished. But where it goes and what its journey is beyond that is a mystery.
What we do know for certain is that creative forces are the single strongest antidote to destructive forces, and we need them now more than ever. We're so grateful to you for adding to the power of ours, in the form of THE SOUNDING.
With buckets of gratitude,
Catherine, Deborah & the entire SOUNDING team!
