A muddler is a bartender's tool, used like a pestle to mash—or 'muddle' fruits, herbs, and/or spices in the bottom of a glass to release their flavor. A Muddle Buddy is a splashguard that is used with a muddle and a mixing glass. It reduces contamination from the bartenders hand and contains all the ingredients in the mixing glass while the ingredients are being muddled.
My name is Ashton Phillips, and I am the inventor of the Muddle Buddy. I have worked in the restaurant industry for 21 years. Over that time I have held positions ranging from busser to District Manager of multi-location restaurant chains. I came up with the idea for the Muddle Buddy after watching countless bartenders struggle with the messy process of muddling. I have run into the issue numerous times where the ingredients being muddled together splash out of the mixing glass and end up on the bar or worse, on a customer. I decided enough was enough, and took action to solve the recurring problem.
I contacted a family member, "Mike", who had a connection to a design specialist named James Spouler from Octo Industries Ltd. I met with James and discussed the idea I had to create a splash guard to be used in conjunction with a muddle. After a few meetings he came up with a version of what I had explained to him. Here is what that first run looked like:
After some testing, we realized the slit you see in the above photo wasn't necessary as we originally thought, and It still allowed some ingredients to escape the mixing glass. We decided to remove the slit from the design and took a few more measurements for additions to the Muddle Buddy for improved functionality. We added an outer rim that would snugly fit to any shaker tin and an inner ring that fit perfectly into a pint glass so it was multifunctional. Here is a 3D rendering of version 2:
After a few small measurement tweaks, we machined a new mold plug in the workshop.
From that plug we created a mold, and the first fully functional Patented Muddle Buddies were ready to be poured and tested.
Here is a quick run down of the making of one prototype Muddle Buddy.
Muddle Buddy Prototypes are Multiplying.
Now that we have a working Muddle Buddy Prototype we have taken it to a few different mold makers and received quotes for the commercial molds to be made. James has worked with the mold company to make sure they have the files needed to proceed. They have assured us that everything is in working order and are awaiting us to give them the green light. That's where the Kickstarter community comes in. We need your help to get the molds made!!!!
I also thought it would be cool to offer a complete Muddle Buddy kit for the at home user........ So I contacted Elton, over at Studio 306 Design, and we came up with amazing retail packaging.
Here is the Muddle Buddy packaging with contents inside:
The contents of The Muddle Buddy kit include: Muddle Buddy, Muddle, Muddle Buddy recipe book, Shaker Tin, Pint Glass, and Strainer. Everything you need to make awesome muddled cocktails at home.
Here is some content from the recipe book that comes with the Muddle Buddy Kit:

KICKSTARTER FUNDING WILL BE USED TO:
The first step to be completed after successful funding from the Kickstarter community, is to get the commercial mold tooling made. Once the mold is complete we will be able to purchase the initial production run of 5000 units. The second step will be to purchase the initial production run of the packaging. Here is a diagram of what the packaging layouts look like:
The third step is to pack the Muddle Buddy contents and ship them off to all of our amazing supporters.
Risks and challenges
There is always going to be the unknown obstacle that will arise in creating something brand new. We will work diligently to make sure that any delay or obstacle is resolved faster than you can say, "Muddle Buddy". Most of the delays that would put this project behind schedule have already been ironed out in the development phase, and we are hoping this process will move forward smoothly. Always the optimist we shall be!!!
We also face the challenge of spreading the word about Muddle Buddy. Please help us get the word out on blogs, social media, and every other cool way there is to inform your friends. Thank you all so much for your support!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
