About

We love traveling. There's nothing quite so invigorating as setting foot in an airport with the sure knowledge that in less than a day we will be a good long ways away from where we started. Exploring a new place, probably trying to figure out how to get to a hotel after being up for a day and a half while the cab driver smiles, nods, and charges you a triple. The ding of the seatbelt sign, the crinkle of individually wrapped we-think-it's-chicken airplane meals and the various smells that waft through a pressurized cabin. It's exciting, but could it be better? Yes.

ZzzMask is Really Simple

It comes in two pieces. There's a thin strap that tightens around your headrest above the entertainment screen behind you, and a mask with small velcro strips on either side that attach to the strap, gently attaching your head to the seat. You can play with where exactly you want them to attach for optimal comfort. We recommend that you are not too tall, for this to work your head cannot stick out above the headrest.

Light & Compact

Built with the ultimate globetrotter in mind, it weighs almost nothing and comes in a handy draw string pouch that is small enough to fit almost anywhere. In our backpacks where every sock matters, the ZzzMask is a welcome addition.

Comfortable

Molded foam on the inside of the mask keeps your face comfortable and your eyes pressure free. The strap splits in the back in the same fashion as a swimmers goggles to keep the mask from moving while you snooze.

Safe

Yes, you are going to attach your head to your seat, but it is designed with just enough velcro to let you out again with any sudden forceful movements.

Our Process

The inspiration was a desperate attempt to sleep on a 22 hour trip from Delhi, India to Portland, Oregon. It was merely the airplane blanket tied around the back of the headrest, strapping down the forehead. Here are some of the other steps along the way:

The first, hand made, version. Using a borrowed sewing machine and a morning at the craft store.

The first one only really held the head up across the forehead, enter the second beautiful prototype with a bit less bulk.

Almost Done

With our design finished and our factory standing by, all we need is your help to fund our first full run of production!

Risks and challenges

All of our production is outsourced to a single factory that specializes in making sleep masks of all different types. The prototype you see in the images at the top is in fact a sample from the factory after many rounds back and forth revising the design. With your support we will be able to make a full production run, and though the amount we have set in the project only covers the 'minimum' order quantity allowed by the factory, anything above and beyond that is well within our capabilities.

After the kickstarter project ends, we expect for the production run and shipping to take 5-6 weeks, with the product arriving in your hands probably late December or early January.

Once the product is shipped here we plan on doing the kickstarter fulfillment from our living room. In the event that we have the (amazing) problem of more backers than we can handle by ourselves, we will either consider hiring temporary workers, taking 'vacation' from our regular jobs, or even shipping to a fulfillment center to have them handle it more efficiently.

For normal operations after the kickstarter project, we will rely on Amazon to handle sales and fulfillment for us. For this first run we just want to be hands on and make sure that the ZzzMasks are up to snuff and everything goes smoothly.
