About this project
The Great American Eclipse of 2017 is one of the most significant astronomical events of the 21st century! Millions of people from all around the world will be descending to its path as it makes a swath across the United States on August 21, 2017.
This patch has been designed to commemorate the event for you for a lifetime, whether you were in the path of totality or viewing it from elsewhere.
Ten of these patches will be taking a trip to the edge of space on a stratospheric balloon loaded with cameras and other instruments to observe the total solar eclipse from 90,000 to 120,000 feet! Those patches will be sent with a certificate of authenticity guaranteeing that they have been flown to the edge of space.
Risks and challenges
Art may change slightly before finalized.
With regards to the flown patches: High altitude ballooning is not without its risks. the most obvious risk to the entire project is the loss of the payload that prevents recovery of the items on board. We will equip the payload with electronic devices that will allow us to pinpoint the landing location of the payload. The mission will be launched in the state of Oregon. If conditions do not persist to allow a safe, legal and recovery launch, it will be postponed until conditions improve.
In the event of a catastrophic failure that prevents us from recovering the patches, we will offer a full refund.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
