A trainer develops an abstract technique to alleviate the phobias and fears of her clients. Based on the Rebirthing technique. Practioners utilise sustained breathing exercises, activated between exhalation and inhalation, accompanied by conscious auto-suggestion. Trainers believe they can reconfigure memory from birth and prior to conception. They consider it a self-improvement mechanism which can provide the cure for a variety of diseases.
According to clients, it causes an accumulation of “energy of life”. In reality, the sustained and forced rhythm of respiration produces hyperventilation that can be life-threatening.
The story takes place in a gymnasium with a pool, where 4 eccentrics will be put to the test to reach a shared goal, jump into the pool resulting in drowning and ultimately their rebirth.
Water is a metaphor for baptism and purification, rebirth as a manifestation of acceptance. Our short film delves into various philosophical questions that are established both through comedy and concrete perspective.
Our short utilizes a plethora of visual references including Xavier Dolán. Fusing the dystopian world of Yorgos Lathimos, the philosophical content of Bernardo Bertolucci and the aesthetic humor of the series The End of the fucking World. Also incorporating the literary aesthetic of the shorts of J.D Sallinger .Finally our visual references taken from the photographer and art director Maria Svarbova.
“Love is a tragic slope. Ever since its birth it is doomed to die, like us.”
"Silence is a canvas and if I can exist in absolute censorship then there is no risk of an invasion from the pollutants of the outside world."
“In humans and animals, fear is modulated by the process of cognition and learning. Thus fear is judged as rational or appropriate and irrational or inappropriate. An irrational fear is called a phobia.”
"Why can we not occasionally allow ourselves to relinquish control or be aroused by the rush of power that comes from true domination over another cognitive being?"
"When will I stop being a tourist of this unnecessary body?"
The characters of the movie are quite particular, they have a superior intelligence that led them to have a life full of far-fetched fears. They want to submit to this technique in order to "re-birth" and find peace within their own thoughts.
Doctor Manuela Avalos had garnered a Messiah like persona for her treatments.
" It was clear she was adept at guerrilla warfare."
David Adams. After falling in love, he cannot open his eyes again and feel vulnerable in front beauty.
Abigail Garcia. A scar on her stomach hides a secret she is ashamed of.
Sylvester Li. He keeps his thoughts encapsulated within absolute sound. He always wears headphones so he can listening to the same music that is perfect for his ears.
Rosetta Nestor. She has an ambiguous disability.
Valentina, our Director, and Eric, our Storyboard Artist, are in the early stages of creating these boards and will be working closely with the cinematographer we collaborate with. We will continue to update this page as more material is created.
Our Costume designer team has made this amazing moodboards as an idea of our characters worlds.
We are a group of five actors close to finishing our Masters in Acting for Screen at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, London. Together with creating this film; from the early creative stages to the final production elements; we will also make up the five cast members.
The Art Director
LOCATION - As you can imagine the search for an indoor swimming pool for 3 days of filming is not a cheap or easy venture. Though we are hoping to secure a pool for minimum costs, these will still include the payment of two life guards, basic facilities and transport hires.
CAST AND CREW - The creative team and cast are investing their time in this project but we don’t expect our crew to work for free, nor on an empty stomach. We need your help to fund the pay, food and water to keep our team going. We will also pay for their travel and roaming data charges.
EQUIPMENT - Filming by water, though very exciting, is not at all simple and requires very specific equipment that can deal with the wet, hot and very humid conditions. We are planning to film underwater which requires no only specific equipment but further safety measures and qualified crew. Because of this we will require more expensive equipment to capture the quality images we are hoping for - and your funding will help that.
POST PRODUCTION - After our intense and exciting filming week in July, our work has only just begun and your support will help us in those crucial few weeks in post: editing, grading, and perfecting the final footage.
FESTIVAL FEES - We have every hope for this project and after all the work that has gone into it so far and the huge amounts still to come, we need to show the world our creation!
PRODUCTION DESIGN - Your support will help our Production Designer. Supported by our hair & makeup designer who will be working closely with our costume designer to give our actors the look and feel we need to achieve.
Our Kickstarter aim is £5,000 but our final goal is £10,000. This includes all of the additional costs that come with publication, promotion and festival submissions. This further amount we aim to raise through professional grants and art funding.
