What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

For some time I've been working on an improvement to my homemade analog oscilloscope clock, and now I have a prototype ready to put into production! The improvements feature a connection and interface to a gps module OR a wifi module, and the firmware to support it. The gps module outputs a NMEA sentence which the microcontrollers parse to extract the time and date. The wifi module simulates this same output and extracts time & date from a webpage by accessing a network via wifi. I have created a small pc board to support the wifi module via the same port for the gps module.

This also works quite well with the nwts wifi module developed by Azevedo devices, as shown on the page at http://www.azevedo-devices.com/ and it can also support the nwts pc board with some minor modifications.

The following describes the design of the analog style oscilloscope clock, taken from the original campaign: 

"The analog oscilloscope clock is similar to my previous designs but differing in the manner the display is created. The segments which make up the characters are generated as a continuous line, arc or circle by using an analog switch and digital potentiometers and rheostats controlled by a microcontroller to manipulate an analog signal (sine wave) from an oscillator. This is quite different from my previous method of using vectors (dots) to draw the display point to point. The board has pots to adjust vertical & horizontal height / width, focus, astigmatism, brightness, and vertical and horizontal centering, as well as oscillator shape, oscillator gain and phase shift."

Risks and challenges

The most challenging aspect of this project was developing the interface which had to parse the data as asynchronous serial and then output it as synchronous serial. Developing the firmware was far more challenging than developing the hardware. This is the fun for me of creating the prototype and developing it for production!
