1857 - The world is in turmoil. The dead have risen in Bombay. Vampires walk openly in New Orleans, stealing away virgins and pubescent boys to never be seen again. In Oslo, men in the throes of making love to their wives transform into ravenous bears and wolves. In London, commoners have succumbed to a madness, reveling in orgiastic rites on the streets—an open affront to British propriety and dominion. The Vatican has sealed its borders to bar away thousands of pilgrims caught up in a sodomitic craze. Even the guiding light of morality—the court at Tehran—has dissolved into a jumble of bodies and turgid limbs. On coastlines everywhere from the Sandwich Islands to Perth, Bangkok, Rio de Janeiro and Athens nebulous, tentacled sea-creatures have been sighted crawling to shore and coupling with humans. Sailors across the globe whisper of otherworldly storms, ghost ships, succubi and even the re-emergence of Atlantis....
The world’s imperial powers are helpless and a sense of Bacchanalian doom looms over humanity. This is no job for a league of extraordinary gentlemen. Only the secret society known as A Thousand and One Knights can save the world. Once the elite of the Persian Empire, they are now comprised of champions who have arrived from around the globe. These brilliant and worldly venturers set out in their airships and steam-powered submersibles to unroot the source of this new evil.
This is Mettlefetchers, an interactive, role-playing narrative e-book—not the clunky choose-your-own-adventure style book you read as a kid. There’s no cumbersome 2nd person narrative (“You walk into the cave and and come to a fork. To go left, turn to page...” Uhm, no thanks!). Instead, pick the character you want to follow—a selection of straight, gay, transgender, and non-human heroes—and help them make their choices as they travel the world and face a slew of exotic and erotic dangers. Think of it as a combination between a top-rate spec-fiction novel and a role playing game. The book will feature an expansive world that combines elements of steampunk, urban fantasy, mythology and horror, and a multitude of storylines and sensual scenes to provide hours upon hours of entertainment.

About the Authors - Mettlefetcher's creators are two bright, up-and-coming authors in the speculative fiction world: Garrett Calcaterra and Ahimsa Kerp, who have previously collaborated together on the fantasy novel The Roads to Baldairn Motte and the award-winning film script The Cannibal (aka Dark Hunger). Calcaterra is author of the new epic fantasy novel Dreamwielder from Diversion Books and the horror collection Umbral Visions. His erotica writing has appeared in Sex & Seduction from X-cite Books and Erotic Dreamspell. Calcaterra holds a BS degree in chemistry and biology and an MFA degree in creative writing. Ahimsa Kerp is author of the forthcoming novel Empire of the Undead. In addition, he has published numerous short stories, including an acclaimed erotica short story in Cthulhurotica from Dagan Books. Kerp holds a BA degree in English and Philosophy and an MA in Classics and Ancient History. For this project, Calcaterra and Kerp will be writing under the pen name Charles James Harden.
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge in completing and delivering this project will be organizing the numerous storylines and character viewpoints into a cohesive narrative. As the creators, we intend to incorporate techniques from video-game development, RPG creation, and novel writing. We'll develop a detailed codex of our alt-history world as well as a story map to allow us to weave the varying storylines into a complex, rich interactive novel.
Other choose-your-own-adventure e-books on the market suffer from clunky writing and inoperative hyperlinks, meaning the reader has to "flip" countless pages to get to their next section. We'll be curtailing the clunky writing style by kicking the 2nd person narrative to the curb and instead narrating the story like a traditional action-adventure novel. In addition, we'll be hiring a professional e-book formatting company to get the hyperlinks right and utilize the capabilities of modern e-reading devices to make your reading experience seemless.
