Moving the sun is a short documentary about a small town in Norway called Rjukan. For 6 months every year the sun doesn't rise high enough over the mountains to light the town that lies in the valley below.

The film asks the audience, what must it be like psychologically to live in an environment where half of your life is spent in the shadows, living through winters that reach -20 degrees.

Through beautiful cinematic shots we explore the town and the hostile landscape that surrounds it. With honest and thought-provoking interviews from the artist behind Rjukans's sun mirror project, residents of the town and experts in the field of seasonal psychology, we will capture the crucial essence of what it means to live in Rjukan.

The Mirror Project

Rjukan has attracted lots of international press recently due to an exciting project to bring sunlight to the town in winter months. The idea of using mirrors to reflect sunlight back into the town from the mountains was conceived over 100 years ago by a resident and worker in Rjukan called Oscar Kittilsen. The idea was not technically possible at the time, so a cable car was built instead to give residents and workers a route into the sun.

After 13 years of research, planning and dedication, local artist Martin Andersen finally made the mirrors a reality this winter. We visited the town on a research trip in November, and saw the mirrors just after their completion. Besides being a feat of engineering and a nod to Norwegian determination and ingenuity, they are an almost biblical spectacle, and clearly light up more than the town square upon which they are focused.

Our promise

Every penny you pledge will go towards the completion of this film. We have got this far independently, and now we want your help to make this a reality. We have chosen to put this project on Kickstarter, because we wholeheartedly believe in the power of collaboration, and we want wonderful people like you involved!!

........................................................................................................................

The Budget

Our £5,000 goal is set to cover all of the production costs involved in the making of the film. This includes, travel, accommodation, camera equipment and distribution. We are keeping this budget as tight as possible, and while we are pulling in many favours, the full £5,000 is the minimum amount we need for this to work.

Releasing the film

Moving the sun will be delivered pre-release to our Kickstarter supporters in both DVD and digital formats in July 2014.

We are working with a distributor to enter us into film festivals.

After the festivals we will be moving to a public release.

We will be pitching for UK and Norwegian airtime.

We will be showing the film at a London premier, which you can also attend with one of our pledge rewards.

Risks and challenges

As with any production, this project has its fair share of risks and challenges that lie ahead. However there are some very specific to our film:

-Weather-
The nature of the documentary means that we are at the mercy of the light in achieving our shots within the time we allocate. We have three planned trips to film the documentary, and have been sure to give ourselves plenty of contingencies in our shooting schedule.

-Temperatures-
We will be dealing with temperatures low enough to render our camera equipment useless, so a lot of consideration has been put into methods to keep our kit warm and functional!!

-Accessibility-
The steep faces of the surrounding mountains are peppered with jaggered rocks, frozen waterfalls and mighty trees. We must find a safe route up the mountain to achieve some shots that will be crucial in the film, possibly with the help of a local ice climbing team.
