About

About the TriTab

At our school, we use a lot of iPads.  In August, every student in grade K-5 will have their own.  We make a lot of video.  But we discovered that there was no easy way to use a tripod with an iPad.  We found some tripod mounts online, but they all required that the students take the iPad out of their case and attach it to a complicated, expensive holder.

Mr. Withers and Mr. Morris worked in the design technology lab to invent a better solution.  They tested it with second graders this year, and it's great. Every time a visitor sees the TriTab they say "every school is going to want one of these."  So we formed a company of middle school students to make them and sell them.

The TriTab has these benefits or Unique Selling Propositions:

  • Original, simple and effective.
  • Small, light and adjustable.
  • Easy to use.
  • Works with many tablets and cases.
  • By attaching it to your own tripod, you can tilt it up or down.
  • It lets you use your iPad many purposes, such as Skype, as a document camera or as a video camera
  • Affordable.

Celebrating the completion of our Kickstarter page!

Why did we choose $25,000 as our funding goal?

The financial department (especially Thomas, Carlos and Young Jae) carefully analyzed the competing products on the market as well as other similar projects on Kickstarter.  We don't want to ask for too much money, since we really do want to achieve our goal and launch the product successfully.  Because of start-up costs, factory production costs, minimum order quantities, shipping and fees, our break-even point is about $15,000.  We think $25,000 is a reasonable goal that will allow us to sell the TriTabs to hundreds of schools at a reasonable price.  We hope we raise even more!

Why did you choose the name TriTab?

We spent a class period brainstorming names and ranking them.  When we were done, we had ten or fifteen great names.  Then we searched the internet to see if they were available.  We found that "TriTab" was in use by Innova Pharmaceuticals.  We contacted their legal department and got approval to use their trademark, since we are not in competition.  We think the name "TriTab" helps people understand that the product fits on a tripod, and works with iPads as well as other tablets.  It's a catchy name.

Does the TriTab really fit with every iPad case?

The TriTab fits with most normal-sized cases. We've tested the TeckNet, the Griffin Airstrap, and several regular notebook-type folding cases.  It even fits with larger cases such as the Griffin Survivor or the Gumdrop DropTech.  It is not quite big enough for very large cases like the Squish case or the Grip Case.  It will work with the Apple smartcover, and it could even work with no case at all.  However, the iPad without a cover will slide around inside the TriTab, and may slide out.  You should use a case.

The case we recommend is the NutKase.  That is the case that all our elementary school students will use next year.  Our original prototype TriTab was designed and tested to fit perfectly with the NutKase.  Also, the CEO of NutKase was very helpful in answering questions from our TriTab production team and has offered to help us find a production facility.

Show me how to use the TriTab - how to take photos, how to put the iPad in it, and which cases it works with.

Sure - watch our video featuring Igor, Saul and Milo!

Where can I learn more about your project?

Follow us on Twitter at @MyTriTab, Like our Facebook page, follow our company on LinkedIn, read our blog, and look at our crunchbase profile.  Our marketing department is working hard at getting the word out via social media.

If you are under 18 and not living in America, how can you have a Kickstarter and Facebook account?

Our teacher, Mr. Apel, is using his personal Kickstarter account for this project.  The students in charge of our social media campaign are complying with all applicable laws and terms of service of the social media services we use.  Daantje, our Director of Social Media, is 14 years old and runs our Facebook page in cooperation with other members of our marketing department.

What is the history of the TriTab?

Imagine this, being in the 19th centuries and finding out that there´s a new gadget that can film a one-minute moving picture called “movie”.

That really happened 108 years ago, and people were so surprised that when they saw the train in the film they thought that it would break the screen and run over them!

Since that year the camera has been evolving so much that from a big and heavier prototype we reach to the tablets that are small and comfortable and is usually what we use today.

Now, we tend to buy new stuff that can help us in almost everything such as tablets.  Tablets have many functions such as games, music, Internet and even work as a camera.

The camera in tablets are very useful and sometimes are even better than a real filming one because they’re so small that they can be carried easily.

But, as so many things, this invention has its problems. While filming with tablets, people tend to move it a lot, therefore, when you see the result you find a “shaking video”.

And that’s when we come in with the Tritab, our first and unique product.

See the history behind the design in this video featuring Mr. Withers and Mr. Morris

Tritab is a tablet holder. This device helps handling most kind of tablets, including iPads and Galaxy Tablets, in order to get stable images when you are recording videos. Tritab also works like a document camera, allowing people to show any document, paper, picture, etc. that needs to be show in any kind of screen.

You can also use the TriTab for stop-motion animation or time-lapse photography.  See this video showing how our pre-school classes use time-lapse animations to reflect on their play time.

Risks and challenges

Recognizing the risks and challenges of being a first time manufacturing for the first time in China, ISA has teamed up with Oliver Page of Nutkase Accessories. Oliver launched Nutkase, an apple accessories business 3 years ago as a junior in high school. He has worked extensively in China. His assistance in helping us oversee the supply chain including the selection of a manufacturer will be invaluable. Communicating with Chinese manufacturers is never straightforward, notwithstanding all the preparation. "Lost in Translation" seems to be the saying that best captures the challenges for any entrepreneur embarking in China for the first time. Having an experienced partner with a proven track record will insure we are able to overcome the obstacles and deliver our product on time and within the budget.

Also, please bear in mind that we will be on summer vacation during July and the first part of August. We will get a big shipment from our factory in China over the summer and spend part of our vacation repackaging and shipping the TriTabs to you. But we aren't sure how long it will take the factory, so they may not be ready for you on the first day of school.
