Tacoma: City of Destiny--a fake documentary by Scott Bateman
I'm making a fake documentary about the city of Tacoma and its citizens (assuming that Tacoma even exists: the proof is shaky).
TACOMA: WHAT GIVES?
It's a city that exists somewhere. Or is it?
Tacoma: City of Destiny will be a feature-length fake documentary about Tacoma: its bizarre citizens, its odd customs, its strange history, and more. There may be sewer monsters! There may be giant flying fish attacking the city! There may be space aliens! Also, the film looks at whether or not Tacoma (or anything, really) even exists.
Like my previous feature film You, Your Brain, & You, Tacoma will be presented as a series of short, funny chapters. It's a structure I borrowed from Peter Greenaway's first feature film The Falls, and it really, really works! Basically, my filmmaking style is somewhat Pythonesque, with a good deal of experimental stuff thrown in--very different from anyone else working right now. Big fun!
WHAT THE MONEY IS FOR
I need the money for two things.
First, I need a new MacBook--the one I currently use is about to give up the ghost. I made a feature film and a short film on it, plus I wrote a book and made countless web videos. It won't survive another feature film; the USB ports are already going.
Second, I want to travel to LA to film people I know--many of these people are semi-famous in the entertainment industry! I can't name names yet, as I haven't approached anyone yet. But my previous feature You, Your Brain, & You included Kevin Murphy from Mystery Science Theater 3000, Kevin Allison from The State, and many New York City comedians. I want to increase the star-power for Tacoma: City of Destiny!
AND BUT SO
My award-winning debut feature film You, Your Brain, & You has just finished its festival run and will soon be available for streaming in the US. My just-completed short film 600 Space Aliens is now starting its festival run. Both were successfully funded here on Kickstarter. I know how to make a funny, entertaining film and I know the festival process.
If you want to get a better sense of my filmmaking style, watch this clip from my award-winning feature film You, Your Brain, & You (with MST3K's Kevin Murphy!):
And there'll be more like this in the new film. Yay!
I've added an update about where I currently am with the film, where I see it going, and how I work. Check it out!
I hope you will support Tacoma: City of Destiny! Thank you so much.
Risks and challenges
Every project faces challenges. I'm planning on putting a few thousand dollars of my own money into the film. I've made a feature for under $10,000 before and I intend to do it again.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
