What is Span about? Not so much the plot, but what is the heart of the film. The answer is two fold.
Span is a feature length science fiction film, but at its core, it’s a mystery/suspense film set against an unusual backdrop and containing unique characters in extraordinary circumstances. It is a tale of people charged with executing the most important mission in human history and to what ends they will go to see it through.
Span is also a tale about what it truly means to be human. It explores how hard one will fight to hold on to continuing life. When people ask me what span is about, I often counter with the questions; if you knew the exact day you were going to die, how would your life change? Would you make new and different choices every day and what would those choices be? Most importantly, if you knew not only when you were going to die, but when you would be reborn, what kind of person would you be? Especially if you were one of the last five people left alive...
The other question I often get from people is; why crowd funding? Since we have traditional investors involved, why would we reach out to fans and supporters. In a video I recorded for this campaign, I discussed my desire for this to be a project fueled not just by the passion of the filmmakers, but the passion of the fans as well. I wanted it to be a film where people could participate in the process at every step.
As a filmmaker, I am often in the position of working with a small group of talented individuals as we conceive and produce projects and then I send them out into the world for audiences to evaluate and hopefully enjoy. The crowd funding efforts allow us to share the film at every stage of development. It allows the fans and audience to see every evolutionary step that the film takes and observe it as it grows from concept into a full fledged feature film. That is very exciting for us.
In fact, it is that feeling of excitement that brought together the core group of producers, designers and special effects artists that comprise our production company, The Difference Engine. After carving out our individual careers, we all found ourselves in a position to conceive and execute a film that reminds us of why we chose these paths to begin with...
So where does the crowd funding money go? It goes to assist in two areas of production; set construction and casting.
Anyone who has ever made a film will tell you that there is a lot of compromise involved. I have the benefit on this project of working with some extremely talented and experienced VFX artists, designers and CGI artists. The virtual world created for Span will be unique and fully realized. Knowing that, I want the physical world of Span to match that level of quality and detail.
The production team is dedicated to creating sets that are both expansive in their scope, but also capable of being as fully functional as possible. We do not want our world to be one where objects and locations feel too “convenient” in their design. We want it to feel like a space that was constructed by people for people with every detail realized as though it were our world.
As for casting, I have been privileged on many to work with both established “Hollywood” talent as well as relatively unknown actors who are at the beginning of their careers. I want to continue to bring that mixture of seasoned talent and exciting new faces to Span. There are many actors that we are considering for the roles in the script and when we find the people that are right, we don’t want to be forced to compromise.
Span is a project that is very close to our hearts at Difference Engine Films. It is the project that brought us all together and has inspired us to try to bring something that is both genuine and different to fans of the genre. We are committed to making the film that we all want to see and we are especially thankful to all of you for joining us in that cause. We look forward to not only sharing the final film with all of you, but to having you all along every step of the way. Thank you again for all of your support.
