Har Mar Superstar and Donovan Leitch shine in a musical short about passion, betrayal and a sibling rivalry of legend!
A short musical film which tells the story of a fictitious 1980s entertainment icon—and the brother who stole his act—WATERMELON TEARS stars acclaimed musician/actors Sean Tillmann (Har Mar Superstar) and Donovan Leitch.
Hi Kickstarter, I'm Lily! I wrote and will direct the movie.
Fascinated by the heartbreaking notion that two men could sever family ties over rights to a seemingly lighthearted act, I decided I wanted to write a movie inspired by it. At the same time, I was rediscovering my love for 80s pop musicals. Why not blend these two obsessions into the best movie ever made?!?!
And THAT is how WATERMELON TEARS was born.
While certainly an homage to classic rock musicals from the 70s and 80s, WATERMELON TEARS will also be something entirely unique:
A SOLID GOLD spectacle of fashion and dance, a saturnalia of mind bending "phäntasy" and drama unlike any ever witnessed by man or melon!
To bring our story and songs to life, we've assembled an incredible team:
Multi-talented recording artist, actor and songwriter, Sean Tillmann. Known for his rousing stage performances and beautiful voice, Sean has recorded several albums such as The Handler and Dark Touches as Har Mar Superstar and written songs for Jennifer Lopez, Kelly Osbourne and The Cheetah Girls. Sean has also starred in such films as Starsky and Hutch, Whip It and Pitch Perfect.
Check out one of Sean's awesome live performances!
Starring alongside Sean, will be acclaimed actor, musician, and filmmaker Donovan Leitch. Donovan is the lead singer of rock n’ roll super group Camp Freddy featuring Dave Navarro and Chris Chaney (Jane’s Addiction), Matt Sorum (Gun ‘N Roses/Velvet Revolver) and Billy Morrison (The Cult). He has most recently been seen headlining Hedwig and the Angry Inch at The Roxy on Sunset Strip. Donovan has also appeared in cult films such as I Shot Andy Warhol, Gas Food Lodging, and Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo.
Check out Donovan in Hedwig and the Angry Inch!
Choreographing our electrifying dance numbers we’ve got Mark Swanhart, who's past work includes Baz Luhrmann's La Boheme, Celine Dion’s Taking Chances Tour and Viva ELVIS for Cirque du Soleil.
Our Director of Photography, Ben Fee, is a talented director in his own right, having shot several music videos for artists such as Tilly and the Wall and Aesop Rock.
Producer Bill Fiala has directed and produced 5 independent shorts including NOUGAT which won SXSW and toured with Spike and Mike’s Sick and Twisted Animation Festival. Bill also has over 12 years of post production experience at a major motion picture studio.
Producer Sarena Cohen is producing the SHIT out of WATERMELON TEARS. She currently works in Feature Post Production at a major motion picture studio coordinating big fancy movies and is a surprisingly great rapper.
WATERMELON TEARS will also feature the BEST SONGS EVER WRITTEN about pulp and rivalry.
Written by composers Mike Turner and Mark Ullrich, our original songs perfectly encapsulate the music of the period and the film’s unique story. Let’s put it this way: if you were a pioneering prop comic in the early eighties jamming E.L.O. or Supertramp backstage before skating out to entertain middle America, then yes…these are the songs you’d sing.
I almost forgot! Here's a little bit about me...
I have an extensive background in both film and dance, bolstered by a degree in filmmaking and choreography from the Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA, and a steady gig as a post-production supervisor at a major-motion picture studio in Los Angeles. I’ve supervised such films as Ramona and Beezus, The Sitter and The Three Stooges.
I know the ins and outs of filmmaking, but most importantly, I know how to get things DONE. With your help, my expertise, and a touch of fruit-flavored luck, we can make this film happen!
This team is confident, capable and committed. Now all we need is your support.
This campaign is our ONE AND ONLY funding source. With our exceptionally talented leads Sean Tillmann and Donovan Leitch, months of planning and brainstorming, and the kindness of a few well-connected friends, we’re finally set to begin filming. All we need is a final push in funding to get this show on the road.
After careful budgeting and analysis of our resources, we estimate that we need to raise the bare minimum of $27,500 to make this film.
Kickstarter is an all or nothing proposition. We need to raise at least $27,500 to see a penny of it; anything we raise beyond that goal will go into making this production better. More elaborate sets, better costumes, more fruit to smash!!
If we don’t reach our goal, we see nothing and this film CANNOT be made.
$27,500 may sound like a lot, but this will all go to the bare essentials including:
- Location rental fees
- Transportation rental fees
- Construction costs
- Production Insurance
Your kind donations will go directly towards the above resources. But remember, the more we raise, the more spectacular WATERMELON TEARS will be!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
There are numerous risks and challenges associated with bringing any film to life. For ours, the biggest challenge, besides reaching our goal, will be managing the multiple phases of producing a musical film. From pre-recording vocal tracks to choreographing, rehearsing and finally shooting with a full cast and crew, this project’s success relies on teamwork and constant and clear communication. To ensure this project’s success, we’ve assembled an experienced, talented and dedicated crew that is passionate about bringing WATERMELON TEARS to life!
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
