A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

The H4WK DIY Drone Kit is a build-it-yourself kit, designed and tested so you can build your very own flying drone with confidence. We documented the build as a project in Issue 010 of DIYODE Magazine, and many of you asked where to get them, so to make it even easier to build, we've created full parts kits for the H4WK Drone!
H4WK is a comprehensive multi-part project drone, with amazing capabilities. It's big, fast, and extremely versatile.
What Makes H4WK Different?
There are loads of options out there for DIY drones. But where do you start? The motors? The flight controller? The chassis? Will it all fit together, and still have enough thrust to fly?
We've done all the hard work by selecting the motors, the appropriate rotors, the right flight controller, and designed a custom chassis and motor mount to suit. It has been tested, re-tested, flown, crashed, repaired, flown again, and everything else we could think to throw at it to iron out any bugs. The kits also come with every single nut, bolt, wire, and everything else required for construction, to help avoid trips to the hardware store for a missing screw!
We have developed step by step instructions, with clear pictures and descriptions to follow along. No more searching forums or dealing with poor documentation to find out why something isn't working. With the H4WK kit, you can enjoy building your very own drone, and getting it up in the air.
What Can H4WK Do?
H4WK may be a lot of fun, but it is also a serious drone. With a payload of over 1kg, it's fully expandable to carry a camera gymbal and GoPro-type action camera, carry small loads from one place to another, and can be programmed for autonomous missions. The kit is extremely expandable, and will be compatible with future enhancements to the H4WK drone project which may be published in DIYODE Magazine, even after build!
Like most drones, you have full control over flight using the 2.4GHz controller. You can also use assisted modes, which are configurable depending on your preference, to include constant-altitude, GPS-stabilised, and loiter modes.
The on-board GPS provides intelligent functions such as "Return To Home", so if your controller fails or the battery is running low, the drone will automatically return to the point of launch. You won't need to worry about losing your H4WK!
Note: Some of our footage and imagery shows a FrSky controller, used during prototyping. The included controller is a FlySky FS-i6 controller, as shown below.
H4WK also includes wireless telemetry modules. These systems allow you to run a base-station computer, which receives live updates. Using the recommended free software, you'll receive altitude data, GPS-positioning data with a live map overlay, a false-horizon overlay, battery voltage, and so much more. It gives you eyes on precisely what's happening onboard at all times, with real time, wireless updates.
You can also send commands and updates to your H4WK drone while it's in the air, with changes to flight modes and paths.
3D Printed Chassis & Motor Mounts
H4WK utilises 3D printed parts for the main chassis and motor mounts. This makes them lightweight and customised to H4WK's needs. We provide you with the files so you can print unlimited spares for the parts that are most likely to break in the event of a collision back to Earth. Depending on the reward you select, these 3D printed parts may be included. However, if they’re not in the kit you’ve selected, or you’d like something a bit different, you can make new ones out of any 3D printable material you like!
A major benefit of our unique 3D printed chassis is the ability to modify a design to cater for any new fitting, gymbal, or other attachment you might want to make to your drone. It's simple to update the files and print your revision!
Yes, that's right - H4WK can be programmed to fly totally autonomous missions, with preprogrammed waypoints, altitudes, and more. This gives you the ability to fly specific paths for survey, cinematic panning if you're using a camera, or any other purpose you can imagine.
Missions are configured using free software Ardupilot, and you can watch your drone fly the mission automatically. Of course, you can still interrupt the flight using the wireless controller, should something not go as planned.

Fulfilment of all orders is expected to be 6 weeks from the close of the Kickstarter. Naturally, we'll be monitoring the campaign and will get wheels in motion as soon as it looks like our goal will be reached.

Risks and challenges
The project itself is fully tested and the footage in the video is of our working project, as published in DIYODE Magazine, Issue 010 onward.
You are backing a tried and tested project, but we've taken to Kickstarter to give you a convenient method to purchase everything you need in a complete kit, as well as support the magazine and encourage us to do this again.
Our only potential challenges are fulfilment. We have partnered with an Australian company who specialise in importing kits and drone hardware such as the parts used in H4WK, to reduce the risk of any fulfilment challenges.
Should a manufacturer discontinue or otherwise be unable to supply our requested item, we will substitute for a suitable alternative of equal or greater functionality and quality. We will also test any variations to the project as a result of this, prior to fulfilment. All instructions and guides will be updated to ensure complete step-by-step accuracy.
Of course, there can be unforeseen challenges. In the event of a variance to product or timeline, we will be in contact with our Kickstarter supporters, so you know exactly what's happening.
