About

BACKGROUND

For nearly a decade I've been a Lego modeler of Star Wars spacecraft, specifically “Impossible” ones; ships with the detail, feel and accuracy of the original film models. It’s in using creative design techniques to recreate the sleek, custom-cut plastic look of the studio models in rigid, unshapeable Lego bricks that elevate my craft to what I believe is an art form (let the debate begin).

In 2009 I constructed a Mon Calamari Star Cruiser: Admiral Ackbar's command ship from Episode VI: Return of the Jedi – It’s a trap! The studio model had ZERO right angles -- a Lego builder’s worst nightmare. But by using clever design techniques, I was able to recreate her in a stunning level of detail and accuracy. The epic 7-foot-long, 30,000-piece model landed me on countless blogs including heavyweights Gizmodo and the Official Star Wars Blog. You don’t get on these easily!

THE PROJECT

For the last few years I've had my Lego-injected eyes set on the mother of all Star Wars spacecraft: The Executor -- Darth Vader’s Super Star Destroyer from Episodes V and VI. As of now, the virtual design is ALL THAT EXISTS; a digital blueprint over 1000 hours in the making that captures the studio model in a stunning level of detail.

And now I need your help to see her built with REAL LEGO BRICKS. The funding will account for 60% of her final cost. The rest will come from yours truly.

As you can see, she’ll be VERY BIG. Here side by side with a 5'11" stormtrooper.

Some Statistics:

  • Piece count: 90,000 (approximate)
  • Dimensions: 12’6” x 4’1” x 1’
  • Weight: 100 Kg (220 pounds)
  • Surface Area: 53 Square Feet

I also plan on giving her a fully integrated LED lighting system that will allow her 5000 transparent-blue tiles (windows) and 13 engines to light-up in the dark. If funded, I’m hoping to bring her to Lego conventions across Canada and the United States.

HONEST Q & A

Have you asked The Lego Group for funding? Yes, I have. They said after building a 5.5 million-piece X-wing, they wanted nothing to do with me.

Why will it cost so much? Not all Lego pieces are created equal. Her sleek studio look is the result of over 20,000 light gray tile pieces, which any Lego builder will tell you are scarce and expensive. You can check for yourself here: http://www.bricklink.com/

Why should I give you money to play with a toy? Technically, to play means to have fun. Constructing this will be torture. Besides, I never “play” with my ships. I always sell them to collectors for funding future projects. Again, this is an art project.

Is this really an “art project” or just some hobby you want us to flip the bill for? Art is a subjective term. I only design/build difficult studio-looking ships, which require tremendous imagination to capture in Lego form.

Don’t you have a job? Why not fund it yourself ya jerk? Yes I have a job. Simply put: with the cost of everyday living expenses, I do not have the money to spend on creative endeavors. That’s why I’m on Kickstarter. I can’t spend half my salary on Lego. If you feel this is an unworthy enedavor, simply do not pledge.

REWARDS

All donors regardless of amount will automatically receive:

  • Private project updates on Kickstarter.
  • Final product photos: a gallery of the COMPLETED SHIP in all her glory; 50+ pictures.
  • Your name appearing in the credits posted on the Executor’s official site.
  • And of course MY HEARTFELT THANK YOU!

For a donation of 10$ or more you’ll receive 5 1280px wallpapers along with a digital copy of the INSTRUCTIONS for building the 1-foot-long Imperial Star Destroyer seen in the rendered pictures. This 800-piece model, epic in its own right, is the work of California master designer Brickdoctor.

PRINTS

For donating 30$ or more you’ll receive high definition lithographic prints of the DIGITALLY RENDERED EXECUTOR. Now these prints are not cheap $2 posters. These are VERY HIGH QUALITY prints. This will be artwork worth framing (frame not included).

The source images were rendered as high as 9600 x 5400 pixels (yes, you read that correctly) .

DO IT YOURSELF KIT

For a donation of $750 or more you'll receive an 800-piece DIY kit of the 1-foot Star Destroyer. You'll also receive 6 large prints of your choice and an invitation to see the finished ship in person.

Risks and challenges

Her weight will be enormous. A 10-foot steel beam and mount will be required to support her huge frame. Her integrated lighting system will be a huge undertaking as well. A complicated network of LED lights and wires will need to run throughout the 25 “city blocks” which make up the enormous 25,000 piece dorsal metropolis. As for how long it will take to build her, I’m estimating 10 -14 months. If I have time / pieces I’ll also build an imperial fleet of 5-6 1-foot-long Imperial Star Destroyers.
