The Humid-i-Fire™ is a high-tech fountain and humidifier that operates on wood and gas stoves. No power cord or battery required!

The Idea

Create warm winter memories by bringing your wood and gas stove to life with the Humid-i-Fire fountain and humidifier. It will delight family members and friends, and add a spark to holiday gatherings.

The Humid-i-Fire is a high-tech fountain and humidifier that you use on wood or gas stoves. It can even operate on your gas kitchen stove. It humidifies the air, while adding a tranquil and decorative touch to any stove and requires no power cord or batteries. I've tested my prototypes, and now it’s time to bring this amazing device to your home.

It also works on a gas range!
It also works on a gas range!

A thermoelectric generator in the base of the fountain produces all the electricity the Humid-i-Fire needs to run efficiently and quietly. When the fountain base contacts the hot stove top it generates electricity that powers the fountain’s pump.

The patent-pending Humid-i-Fire is functional and practical. Yet the sight and sound of the fountain bubbling away on your stove also adds a lovely ambiance to the room, whether you are reading a book, playing games with family or friends, or just relaxing on a cold winter night.

While we can't do much about the snow or cold weather, gathering with family and friends around the wood stove is a great way to create warm winter memories. My friends helped inspire me to build the Humid-i-Fire, and with the encouragement and support of the Kickstarter community, you can enjoy a Humid-i-Fire in your home too.

The Story

Over the last 30 years, I have combined a career dedicated to protecting the environment with a love of inventing, tinkering and repairing gadgets and home appliances.

When we bought a wood stove for our living room, like many people, we had a problem with the dry winter air. We put a pot of water on top to add some moisture to the air. But I could see a problem...the water wasn’t evaporating fast enough to really help. I saw a stove top steamer online and realized that wasn’t going to do the job either.

I was inspired to explore creative ways to take a typical stovetop steamer to the next level aesthetically and practically. When my wife brought home a desktop water fountain she had won at an office party, I had a “eureka” moment. I had learned about thermoelectric generators in college and realized that I could make a stove top fountain, and power it with a thermoelectric generator. The design of the fountain increases the rate of evaporation, and by tapping into the energy created by the stove, the thermoelectric generator helps reduce greenhouse gases compared to plug-in fountains.

I went to my workshop and began to brainstorm, test, and prototype different versions until I developed the current Humid-i-Fire model. After many design iterations, I have a prototype of which I am truly proud. I am confident that it will satisfy, comfort, and delight others as well.

The Prototypes

The Humid-i-Fire went through a number of design iterations before we arrived at the final product. Here are some pictures of the original prototypes:

The Thermoelectric Generator

The Humid-i-Fire uses a thermoelectric generator, which is a device that converts heat directly into electrical energy. German physicist Thomas Johann Seebeck invented the thermoelectric generator in 1821. Recent advances have improved their energy efficiency and lowered their cost, so they are now common in many industries. For example, they generate electricity for remote pipelines, communication towers, and even the Mars Rover Curiosity has one!

What’s Included

For this Kickstarter campaign I am launching the Humid-i-Fire, which includes a metal bowl, slate tile, polished stones, a water pump and a generator, all shown in the video and pictures above. The fountain holds one gallon of water, for approximately 10 hours of operation, depending on stove temperature and humidity levels. You can order your Humid-i-Fire in either a round or rectangular shape.

Round model - 12" diameter
Round model - 12" diameter
Rectangular model - 11" x 13"
Rectangular model - 11" x 13"

Unlike any other humidifier on the market today, all that’s needed to operate the Humid-i-Fire is water and a hot stove (wood or gas!). Dependable, eco-friendly, and unique—the Humid-i-Fire will bring you many years of enjoyment.

Once our campaign has successfully completed, we will contact you about t-shirt sizes and additional delivery charges for deliveries to Canada.

Cautions and Limitations

There are a few cautions and limitations to the Humid-i-Fire that I want to let you know about.

  • Like any steamer or hot stove, you must be extremely careful about keeping all children away from the Humid i Fire. The fountain’s water and bowl get extremely hot and will burn if touched.
  • You CANNOT run the Humid-i-Fire without water; the thermoelectric generator will overheat and fail. So long as the fountain is at least one-fourth full of water, the thermocouple and water pump will provide many years of service.
  • The evaporating water will leave a residue that can be cleaned using a mixture of vinegar and water or a commercial lime scale remover.
  • The Humid-i-Fire is designed to fit most medium and large stoves. Please make sure your stovetop has enough space for the fountain. In addition, the Humid-i-Fire will not work on stoves that have an open grill type surface.

I’m confident in my product—and here’s how I’ll prove it

During my career, I’ve worked on projects to protect wetlands, minimize pesticide runoff into rivers, and reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from old diesel trucks. I have used the same knowledge, experience and passion to create the eco-friendly, patent-pending Humid-i-Fire for you. I am so confident in this product that every Humid-i-Fire sold during my Kickstarter campaign will come with a limited, one-year warranty. Please note: the limited warranty does not cover failure of the thermoelectric generator if the fountain is operated at less than one-fourth full.

We Can’t Do This Without You

After two years of developing the Humid-i-Fire, I am ready to bring it to market. Funding the roll out and initial product run is a very expensive undertaking. To get the Humid-i-Fire into production and into your and other customers’ homes, I need to pay for the thermoelectric generator, bowl, pump and slate, and their assembly and delivery. By pre-ordering your Humid-i-Fire, you are helping to pay the upfront production costs, and you will save 50 percent over the expected retail price!

With generous people like you and Kickstarter at my back, I have the chance to make my dream come true. I believe in the Kickstarter community of people who support each other. I love seeing how small actions and pledges can make big ideas a reality. I know Kickstarter will light Humid-i-Fire’s fire!

Each dollar pledged will help to bring this innovative, eco-friendly, appealing stovetop fountain and humidifier to life!

With your generous support, I plan to ship the Humid-i-Fire in October 2014. At this time, we are making the fountain available to backers in the United States and Canada.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

I acknowledge that there are a few risks and challenges that inherently come with this Kickstarter campaign and want to address any questions or concerns upfront. If you have any questions about the product or about me, send me an email at: humidifire@gmail.com. I will do my best to answer your questions.

I have never sold anything on Kickstarter before, but I have extensive experience working with the experts I need to bring a new invention to the market: engineers, lawyers and marketing specialists. I have developed a detailed business plan, production schedule, engineering drawings and, as you’ve seen, a prototype that is ready for manufacturing.

I also have a skilled and dedicated team, and established business relationships with companies who will supply the components, assemble the final product, and deliver them to your doorstep. Having worked for the past 30 years to protect our environment, I also have the passion and commitment to successfully complete our Kickstarter campaign and deliver the Humid-i-Fire to you on schedule.
