MICROBE is a 3D short film about a near-future mission to Mars that goes awry after an accident releases soil containing alien microbes into the ship’s atmosphere.

The Story - How do you fight zombies in zero gravity?

Three astronauts – Duncan Pike, the classic tough-guy leader, Miranda Foley, pretty and a bit goofy, and Ellen Madison, the dorky but loveable scientist – are on the long return voyage from Mars. While studying soil samples, Madison discovers living microbes. It is our first encounter with verifiable extraterrestrial life. During the ensuing celebration, one of the containers breaks open, spraying Foley with particles. A short time later, Pike discovers Foley curled in a fetal position. Chaos is about to break loose on the ship. This is a thriller that will force the characters to confront the question of what it means to be human.

The Vision

The goal is to create an extremely realistic vision of what a manned mission to Mars would actually look like. In other words, there will be no “artificial gravity.” We will use green screen and digital effects to simulate zero gravity. The 3D will enhance this effect by pulling the audience into a world with no up or down. We have actual scientists involved in space exploration as technical advisers to help us maintain the realism. We want to use this environment to create a thriller unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.

Where Your Money Will Go

Pulling off a film like this, even a short one, requires lots of highly technical equipment. We have received a grant to cover a portion of the cost, and we are putting in some of our own money. However, we still need at least $3,000  to make the film. Some of the major budget items include:

-Renting a Green Screen stage

-Renting 3D camera equipment

-Building a cool space ship set

-Renting sound, lighting and grip equipment

-Props, costumes and make-up

-Insurance and other annoying necessities of filmmaking

If we raise $3,000 we can make Microbe. But we’re hoping to exceed our goal. Extra money will go towards things like making the set more expansive and cooler, creating more elaborate visual effects, and doing more big, cool shots.

The People

Doug Eboch (writer/director) is best known for writing the original script for the movie Sweet Home Alabama. While very proud of this film, it has typecast him as a romantic comedy writer. He’s hoping Microbe will be the first step in pursuing stories closer to his true passions. Doug has degrees in screenwriting and film production from USC film school. He’s written and directed for stage (Prank Monkeys, Sleepover at the Stable) and games (Nightmare Cove).

Scott Peat (Pike) has starred in over 70 national TV commercials and done guest roles on shows like NYPD Blue and Monk. He will soon be seen as the lead in the zombie film Dead Season.

Joan Farrell (Foley) has had roles in a handful of films including Killing Frisco, White T and Death Tunnel. She also performed on stage in Prank Monkeys, directed by Doug Eboch.

Howard Heard (editor) has had divergent interests in filmmaking, creative writing, and math and sciences. He has been a film editor for more than thirty years, working on forty-six features, more than fifty hours of prime time episodic television, pilots, miniseries, four documentaries, and other short films and commercials. He co-edited the Emmy Award-winning episode of St. Elsewhere entitled, "Afterlife," and the Eddie-Award-winning MOW, Women of Valor for CBS.

Erika Woo (technical consultant) worked for JPL on the Mars Rover missions.

First Time Using Kickstarter?

Don’t worry, it’s easy. If you’ve ever bought anything on Amazon, it works much like that. Amazon processes the payments to Kickstarter. You simply select what level you wish to give at. If Microbe raises $3,000 or more, you will be charged at the end of the fundraising campaign. If Microbe does not raise the full $3,000, you will not be charged anything. None of your financial information will be given to the filmmakers, though your contact information will be provided so we can fulfill your rewards.
