New MexiCon is the only indie tabletop roleplaying game convention in New Mexico. We strive to offer a wide variety of games in a friendly and welcoming environment. Join us in 2019 for our best convention yet!

A weekend of gaming in Albuquerque: April 5th - 7th, 2019

Join us for all FIVE sessions of gaming!

The genesis of New MexiCon came from late night talks at Origins 2014. A few New Mexicans mentioned putting on a con and several voices called out variations of “I’d go to that!” Less than five months later New MexiCon was born. We were thirty people playing small-press indie games in a dark room. Now, five years later, we have continued iterating on a unique con experience.

What makes us unique? Read on to find out!

Why are we putting on an indie tabletop roleplaying game con? We want people playing roleplaying games - new games, different games, more games! Providing a welcoming space where this can happen is our goal for New MexiCon. We want to expand gaming circles, foster local and regional rpg communities, and bring people together to play games and share ideas!

The traditional model for tabletop roleplaying game conventions has been a large room with lots of tables. This works well for some games but sometimes the nuances of a scene can get lost in a big room with background noise. This is why we have structured New MexiCon to have each game run in its own private room. We want you to have an environment for your game that will be as distraction-free as possible.

Mustering is a fun way to pitch your game or find a game to play on the fly! To kick things off, all people running games will pitch their game to the con. Next, players choose the games they want to be in. A symbol on your badge will help determine priority and resolve ties. The result? We get a large number of people playing really awesome games!

If you want to sign up to run a game or play a game before the convention, we have you covered! After the close of the Kickstarter, there will be a selection of games available for pre-registration online for backers only! More information will follow in Backer Updates.

As much as we like to game we also want to make sure folks have time to eat! Community is important to us, and what better way to get to know someone than to share a meal. This is why we schedule a lunch and dinner break so everyone has time to grab some noms, socialize with their fellow attendees, and still make the next gaming slot.

Mustering at New MexiCon encourages people to bring a wide variety of tabletop roleplaying games. Our convention is shaped by what games people are excited to run! There's only one thing better than playing and running games that you love - finding new games to love! At New MexiCon we encourage people to gravitate not only to those things that you know and love but to try new things as well. Just to give you an idea of the scope of games pitched, here are some of the games people brought to New MexiCon 2018:

Blades in the Dark, Pasión de las Pasiones, Lady Blackbird, Dialect, Lamentations of the Flame Princess, Swords Without Master, Cartel, Inspectres, Velvet Glove, Sagas of the Icelanders, Bluebeard’s Bride, Tales from the Loop, Burning Wheel, Primetime Adventures, Golden Sky Stories, Monsterhearts, Annalise, Epyllion, Mouse Guard, Masks, The Sprawl, Slayer Cake, Blue Rose and so much more!

Every pledge helps us bring you the best convention possible. Every guest helps us brings new and interesting characters to the table. And every game master helps us tell the moving and adventurous stories of our dreams. We love our spotlight GMs and want to give everyone a chance to play with these masters of the craft. So, when you buy a badge you will get a chance at a seat in a spotlight game! Or you can back at THE WHOLE ENCHILADA level to get a guaranteed spot in a GM spotlight game.

With an increase in hotel costs and growing numbers of attendees, we're looking to raise $1,500. We need your help to bring together this weekend of great gaming and awesome people against the beautiful southwestern backdrop of the Land of Enchantment.

Backing this Kickstarter will allow us to:

  • Provide private gaming rooms
  • Stock our Lobo Room with snacks and water
  • Have an on-site printer
  • Put on a post-con BBQ
  • Spotlight talented GMs

Every little bit helps, so please spread the word and bring your friends out to New MexiCon 2019!

This year we are returning to the site of New MexiCon 2018, the MCM Elegante, under a new name: the Ramada Hotel Midtown! Here are some awesome features of this venue:

  •  On-site bar - Great for hanging out with people after games. Chat and have a drink!
  •  Free airport shuttle - Up to 5 miles around the hotel and airport pickup/dropoff.
  •  Breakfast - Free breakfast available for hotel guests. $5.95 for everyone else!
  •  Security - Gated parking with security 24 hours a day.
  •  Swimming pool - Take a break from games and go for a swim!
  •  Convention suite/break room - Hang out, talk games, and relax in the Lobo Room.
  •  Private rooms for gaming - Beds will be removed, making room for tables and chairs
  •  Event oriented staff - Friendly hotel staff is accustomed to hosting events of all sizes.

We have a number of GMs here at New MexiCon whose mastery we want to celebrate. We will single out these GMs to run a GM Spotlight game for select guests! Each badge purchase will grant the attendee a chance at seat at the table!

SPOTLIGHT GM: Justin Suzuki

Justin Suzuki is a human being who loves to game. He was first introduced to RPGs over 30 years ago. Since then he has gone on to turn his love of gaming into hosting such gaming podcasts as RolePlayDNA and Smiling Jack's Bar and Grill. He also helped found Gamers Giving, a 501c3 charity based out of Colorado that raises money through gaming. Justin also helped by working on the Reality Blurs game tremulus.

SPOTLIGHT GAME:  Voodoo Tilt (The Zombies of Rock)

Voodoo Tilt was one of the greatest hair bands of their time, but now a days they play smaller clubs and venues. On this day they are playing an island concert and even the dead are ready to rock! Play this FATE game as a member of the band or one of the roadies who are along for the ride. Bring your best roleplaying skills and get ready to live out all your hairband fantasies!

SPOTLIGHT GM: Alexsondra "Faye" Oas-Thorn

Alex is a wound care specialist nurse with gaming dreams of grandeur. She is often found enthusiastically inspiring non-gamers to come and try something new. Experienced in LARP, first timers, SCA, End of Days and indie table tops of all kinds. Having dipped her toes into many games she has also tried table top war games, board game from BGG and netrunner LCG. Often found a little bit of everywhere, Alex is ready for adventures and snacks any time

SPOTLIGHT GAME: Ten Candles ( When the lights go out)

"Ten Candles” is described as a "tragic horror" game rather than survival horror for one main reason: in Ten Candles there are no survivors. In the final scene of the game, when only one candle remains, all of the characters will die. In this, Ten Candles is not a game about "winning" or beating the monsters. Instead, it is a game about what happens in the dark, and about those who try to survive within it. It is a game about being pushed to the brink of madness and despair, searching for hope in a hopeless world, and trying to do something meaningful with your final few hours left".

SPOTLIGHT GM: Yoshi Creelman

Yoshi Creelman is a member of the Gauntlet gaming community. You may have heard his voice on the occasional podcast, in particular the Mercy Falls Monsterhearts AP or the recent Big Bad Con roundup. His latest effort has been Gauntlet Games Now, an on demand gaming event for the online community. You can catch him playing or running the latest indie story game, most of the time with the hair up... but occasionally his fabulous hair will be down!

SPOTLIGHT GAME: Good Society

Good Society is a game of regency romance and drama. There will be dances and manors, sly glances and whispered rumors, smooches and social backstabbing. All the characters will be entangled in a web of desires and obligations, rife for both disaster and celebration. Which will it be? Come play to find out!

We’ve got some awesome stretch goals lined up. Help us unlock cool new things to add to New Mexicon 2019!

$2,000 - Snack Time! - UNLOCKED

First up, at $2,000 we will provide snacks for the convention. The Lobo Lounge will be stocked with  chips and salsa and bottled water to keep every attendee refreshed and ready for action!

$3,000 - GM Spotlight Strikes Back! - UNLOCKED

Next up, at $3,000 we will bring in another Spotlight GM Game! We have a number of GMs here at New MexiCon whose mastery we want to celebrate. We will single out these GMs to run a GM Spotlight game for select guests. Each pledge of $60+ will give you a chance at a seat at the table!

$3,500 - Super Turbo Megagame! - UNLOCKED

Megagames have been popular at conventions across the country but, to our knowledge, there has never been a megagame in New Mexico. At this level we will be able to change that, offering a large scale game experience incorporating elements of RPGs, LARPs, and wargames. Spread the word and help us unlock this historic goal!

$4,500 - Snack Attack! - UNLOCKED

An edible upgrade! Upon unlocking this stretch goal we will stock the Lobo Lounge with a wider variety of enticing refreshments. Soda, candy, fruit, and the like will be available to you during the convention.

$5,500 - Return of the GM Spotlight! - UNLOCKED

Next up, at $5,500 we will bring in a third Spotlight GM Game! We have a number of GMs here at New MexiCon whose mastery we want to celebrate. We will single another one of these GMs to run a GM Spotlight game for select guests. Each pledge of $60+ will enter you in a raffle to win a seat at the table!

$6,500 - Sandia Peak Game Mastery Awards! - UNLOCKED

Game Master, Master of Ceremonies, Dungeon Master, Storyteller, or Facilitator. Whatever you call them, it’s the people at the head of the table who bring us together time and time again. It’s their hard work and enthusiasm that perpetuates the hobby and continues to nurture our love of tabletop RPGs. And because of that, we think it is important to publicly recognize the exceptional GMs among us and thank them.

The Sandia Peak GM Awards give players the opportunity to nominate their favorite GMs in one of three categories:

  •  System Mastery: This GM facilitated the rules of their game with exceptional grace and skill.
  •  Hospitality: This GM crafted an extraordinarily fun and engaging atmosphere at their table.
  •  Creativity: This GM conveyed a clear and unique vision of the game to their players.

At the finale of our convention, three GMs will emerge victorious as Sandia Peak GMs! Winners are given prizes and showered with thanks and praise.

Jason Slanga, winner of the inaugural Sandia Peak GM Award for System Mastery had this to say about the Awards: "I had played in a game at every session Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday I decided to run Lady Blackbird. I had never run a game at a convention before, and didn't know what to expect. My players were amazing

$7,500 - SIX SESSIONS FOR OUR SIXTH YEAR! - UNLOCKED

At $7,500, we'll be able to make this the BIGGEST New MexiCon yet by adding an extra game session on Friday afternoon! Pack EVEN MORE gaming into your weekend with one more chance to play new games, meet new people, and create new memories!

Keep your games alive by posting and making new friends!

New MexiCon is possible through the generous financial support of the following fine businesses:

Full Metal RPG is a podcast and publisher of RPG zines operating in Tempe, Arizona. #BornToKill

Magpie Games is an Albuquerque-based publisher of indie RPGs, including award winning games like Bluebeard's Bride and Urban Shadows.

Ziapelta Games is the Albuquerque-based publisher of the Golden Geek nominated Wrath of the Autarch, a kingdom-building RPG inspired by FATE that defies easy classification.

Third Eye Games is Eloy Lasanta's RPG publishing company with games such as Part-Time Gods, AMP: Year One, and the award winning 2nd edition of Ninja Crusade.

If you are business owner and would like to become a convention sponsor, get in touch so we can share information about our sponsorship packages.

Matt Bohnhoff is the Convention Chair for New MexiCon. Matt publishes his own silly games through Wasteland of Enchantment and organizes games for teenagers at local libraries. He believes in the power of games as tools of expression, bonding, and education.

Mark Diaz Truman is an independent game developer, co-owner of Magpie Games, and the New MexiCon Treasurer. Mark has authored/co-authored three indie RPGs—The Play’s the Thing, Our Last Best Hope, and the ENnie award-winning Urban Shadows—and is currently at work on his fourth game, Cartel. Mark is passionate about creating an inclusive and diverse gaming community and is thrilled to support New MexiCon’s sixth year!

Justin Rogers, or "J.Ro", is a Program Co-Director for New MexiCon, and has done some writing, editing, and music composition for various indie RPG projects. He enjoys unreleased Apocalypse World hacks and "indie hipster barely-a-game" games, but has recently become super excited about Pathfinder.

Nick Hopkins is a Program Co-Director for New MexiCon. He had a very long stretch away from gaming but jumped back in with both feet in 2012. He manages the Albuquerque Area Meetup site helping people to find games with other people and runs a game for teens at the local library every other Saturday.

Ivan Begley joined the Program team this year. He discovered indie games far to late in his gaming career and, with New MexiCon, is doing everything he can to play as many different games as possible.

Geoff McCool is on the Program team for New MexiCon.  He has absolutely no gaming cred other than he has been gaming since 1980 (Moldvay), play-tested super popular games such as The Sprawl and Wrath of the Autarch, listened to the whole Narrative Control podcast series, and has actually met some published game designers (you know who you are!).

Jason Slanga is a 2018 Sandia Peak Game Mastery Award recipient. He is a fluent speaker of Latin, and co-host of a Latin-language podcast, and is currently designing a short form, one-shot game for play in Latin. Jason is the New MexiCon Community Co-Coordinator.

Graham Gentz mentors at "Working Classroom," a theater and arts nonprofit focusing on the education of youth from historically ignored communities and is the Community Co-Coordinator for New MexiCon. Graham took place in the 2018 200 Word RPG Challenge with “Youre Not A Nice Person Will You Die That Way.” He is currently working on “Secret Journey Monsters,” a narrative-focused TTRPG about children and creatures that replaces the slavery and dogfighting of its cultural influences with a Miyazaki-style sense of wonder.

Marissa Kelly is works with the Community Coordination team for New MexiCon. She is co-owner of Magpie Games and senior art director for John Wick Presents. In addition to her creative work, she spends her summers as a research assistant for both archaeological and paleontological sites.

Katherine Fackrell is the Community Co-Coordinator and Website Manager for New MexiCon. She is the proud recipient of the first New MexiCon IndieSomnia Award for playing too many games instead of sleeping, and is definitely not a vampire..

Sean Friend is a Marketing Coordinator for a local law firm, Slingshot Law and has joined New MexiCon’s Front of House team.  This is his first time being able to join the New MexiCon team as a volunteer rather than a participant.  He has created his own Board Games, Dastardly Deeds and Mystic Pizza, under his company Bananatee Games.  He has a passion for great storytelling, design, artwork, and gaming.  He is looking forward to this new and exciting experience at the next New MexiCon!

Risks and challenges

The contract is signed with the venue and our Kickstarter is launching on time. We have intentionally kept the stretch goals simple to make sure that we have them in place by the time of the con.

This is our second year working with the venue, and they are ready to accommodate the con.

New MexiCon is in our sixth year! We've learned a lot from the five previous New MexiCons and are looking to make this our best con yet!
