Today's Sanchez poem is For Sister Gwen Brooks
We mentioned that we've been working on this documentary for three years. In 2011, one of the very first places we filmed for BaddDDD Sonia Sanchez was at the Furious Flower Poetry Center at James Madison University. There, more than 40 university and high school educators gathered under the leadership of Dr. Joanne V. Gabbin to explore Sonia Sanchez's work and talk about ways of including it in their curriculum.
Many of the Furious Flower participants were poets themselves, and great readers. We asked poet and Professor Antoinette Brim which poem she'd like to read for us, and she selected: "For Sister Gwen Brooks," Sanchez's tribute to the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet who died in 2000.
But before you watch today's video clip, we want to follow up on the list of contributing filmmakers we sent yesterday. We're proud to add more names of our favorite filmmakers to our list of supporters: Yvonne Welbon (The New Black); Mike Dennis (Ladies and Gentlemen, Jordan Rock); Tony Heriza and Jane Golden (Concrete, Steel & Paint); Wendy Univer (Daring to Resist); Mehret Mandefro (Difret); Yoruba Richen (The New Black); Kristin Lesko (Operation Homecoming); Dash Harris (Negro:Latin Identity); Art Jones (Live to DIY); Carol Bash (The Lady Who Swings the Band); Nicole Franklin (Little Brother); Christine Turner (Homegoings); Rafee Kamaal (On the Shoulders of Giants); Jennifer Steinman (Motherland); Kim Borba (Noise Runs).
AND we are thrilled to count film critic Carrie Rickey among our new supporters!
