Yes that's right. $50. Clearly everyone here at Icarus Interstellar just wants our Kickstarter backers to have really some really great stuff.

But wait, there's more!

Back the EVERYTHING reward for $150 and you get one of the remaining six “Section 8“ Charter memberships too, with all the associated rewards (see listing)! That's right. For $150 you get EVERYTHING.

It's been a fantastic Kickstarter campaign, so let's finish this thing with a high note and on a bang. Thank you, everybody. EVERYTHING is AWESOME!

Update #6–Stretch reward:
The Astronaut Instruction Manual

With less than 48-hours to go we are happy to offer another stretch goal (we want to make heavier swag bags for attendees at Starship Congress).

We have 20 personalized copies of author (and long-time Icarii) Mike Mongo's new book, The Astronaut Instruction Manual.

For the space-loving young student in your life. Written for 9-12 year olds, The Astronaut Instruction Manual gives middle-school age students permission to imagine a space future…with them in it.

From Mike Mongo's Amazon page for The Astronaut Instruction Manual:
“Tomorrow's jobs are in space. Whatever career you imagine for yourself--baker, explorer, software designer, artist, builder, baker, maker, lawyer, veterinarian, even athlete--you can do it in space. Knowing that now will give you a critical competitive advantage for whatever you want to do in the future.”

The Astronaut Instruction Manual is written for young students who can imagine they may want to live, work, and play in space. By following the clear instructions I have outlined here in The Astronaut Instruction Manual, you will have a head start on doing whatever you most love doing...in space!

Mike Mongo's The Astronaut Instruction Manual (Inkshares, 2015)
Mike Mongo's The Astronaut Instruction Manual (Inkshares, 2015)

As a special Icarus Interstellar promotion, you can get a signed and personalized copy of The Astronaut Instruction Manual here for the special stretch goal price of $10. It's a great gift for any space and science loving student in your life.

Update #5–Stretch Reward:
“Section 8” Charter memberships

There is something to be said for the fans who are messaging and emailing and tweeting us to about Icarus Interstellar Charter memberships now that STARSHIP CONGRESS IS 100% FUNDED W00T! Like these people are definitely a little different, even a little off.

Which considering our mission here—to explore new planets, to seek out new life and new civilizations, and to boldly go BUILD A STARSHIP—is not so bad. In fact, when we got to thinking about it, being a little off is not such a bad quality at all. After all, coming up with the science necessary to get to another star system will require something a little bolder than standard “out of the box” thinking. To produce an interstellar accomplishment will require thinking that comes from out of left-field.

It is with this in mind that as a stretch goal we are putting up the final group of Charter memberships for our Kickstarter. We call this final category of early-adopters the “Section 8”. Kind of late, always great, the Section 8.

The first group, the First 100, are the trailblazers and trendsetters. The First 100 led the charge.

The second group, the Next 42, are our rule-breakers. The Next 42 are who shows up in a clutch and does it their way.

The third group, “Section 8” are the Icarus Interstellar members who Think Different. The Section 8 Charter members—for waiting until all the other Charter memberships were claimed—are those from whom you never know what to expect. The Section 8 Charter members are kind of out there. The Section 8 make people nervous. It's a very special rewards group.

And there are only eight Section 8 rewards to claim. The Section 8 group of Charter memberships rewards are eight late, eight great Charter memberships which bring the total Icarus Interstellar Charter enrollment number up to 150.

With 48-hours to go, the eight “Section 8” Charter memberships are the final Charter memberships reward we will be offering during this Kickstarter.

And this stretch goal will enable us to have some extra heavy swag bags for attendees of Starship Congress 2015 next week in Philly.

So ask yourself: Are you “Section 8” material?

Update #4–100% FUNDED

“YES!”
“YES!”

YES WE DID IT! WOWOW *YOU* DID IT! You did it! Thank you, backers, supporters, and all-new Icarus Interstellar Charter members. It's official: Starship Congress is 100% funded!

Raise a glass to the future of your favorite beverage, and let's hear a rousing call of Icarus Interstellar's favorite toast:

“BUILD A STARSHIP!”

YOU DID IT! Great work, Everyone! Ad astra!

Update #3—the Next 42

We got the message! Kickstarter backers love starships…and Icarus Interstellar memberships are a hot item. We literally sold out of our “First 100” Charter memberbship reward within 3 days of announcing it. To say it caught us by surprise is a generous understatement: WOWOW!

Unfortunately before many of you had a chance to even learn of Icarus Interstellar Charter memberships, the First 100 reward was gone.

With this in mind, we have launched a second-round of Charter memberships. Round 1 was the First 100. Round 2 we are calling the “Next 42”.

Check out the bounty that comes with the Next 42 Charter membership reward. It is very nearly as sweet as everything that came with the First 100, including most importantly the early adopter enrollment number that in the future will prove that you were down with starships before starships were cool and real. Once again, Icarus Interstellar membership is one-time and for life. We are cracking open 42 more Charter memberships. If you missed out the first time around, here's your second chance to be part of “Team Icarii”. Because remember, everything is cool when you're part of a team!

Update #2: We have launched Icarus Interstellar's “First 100” Charter membership program

Six years in the making, Icarus Interstellar now has our own membership program…and for the First 100 Charter members it's a Kickstarter reward! Membership is one-time and life-long. Enrollment numbers are given on a first come, first serve basis. Secure your low enrollment number and let the world know: "I was Icarus Interstellar from the beginning!"

Bonus: Each enrollment comes with custom numbered Icarus Interstellar membership card and Icarus Interstellar personalized Dog Tags rewards.

In honor of Olaf Stapledon, father of starships.

Update #1—Rachel Armstrong announced as First Speaker

Architectural designer, conceptualist, & futurist thinker Dr Rachel Armstrong has been announced as First Speaker for Starship Congress.

STARSHIP CONGRESS—our story begins

"BUILD A STARSHIP" — Starship Congress 2013 poster [featuring art of Adrian Mann]
"BUILD A STARSHIP" — Starship Congress 2013 poster [featuring art of Adrian Mann]

In 2013, deep space science advocacy organization Icarus Interstellar staged Starship Congress, the first-ever summit of organizations and leaders in the field of space exploration and interstellar flight. Our goal was to bring together a broad cross-section of the interstellar community to foster discussion and inspire tangible action. It was a tremendous success: For three days, 250 scientists, researchers, advocates, and students came together from all over the world at the Anatole Convention Center in Dallas, TX. The presentations of the event were live streamed, and recorded and posted for all to see and draw from.

Starship Congress 2013 was full of surprises. It was certainly to be expected. Some of the most thoughtful interstellar scientists and advocates in the world had gathered. Speakers such as Harold "Sonny" White, Rachel Armstrong, Les Johnson, Sarah Jane Pell, Jim Benford, and many, many others shared ideas and conversation and dialog.

Yet one surprise in particular caught everyone attention.

“Engage Students”

A number of students from many colleges and even high schools from in and out of the US had made a point of attending the very first Starship Congress. And without any prodding, students and working scientists began interacting. More importantly, together they began producing ideas and even results.

This was so monumental because discussions were taking place and decisions were being made that would genuinely affect the direction of the interstellar space science. It meant that Starship Congress was working.

Nearly all of the students who attended Starship Congress 2013 are now working space science professionals.

Michael Parvaresh, Pierson Brooks Sargent, Nick Orenstein, Zach Fejes, and Starship Congress 2013 strategic director Mike Mongo. Note: Three of the four students pictured here are now working space scientists. Two work for SpaceX. (Can guess which two?)

Several went on to become members of Icarus Interstellar. One, Zach Fejes, is project lead and lead developer of Icarus' Project Voyager, a new spacecraft trajectory software built using game engine Unity. Here, Zach Fejes introduces features of Project Voyager:

Project Voyager is a direct spin-off of interactions that took place at Starship Congress 2013. By literally participating in the conference while literally sitting together shoulder-to-shoulder...

University of Toronto's Zach Fejes is flanked by theoretical physicist Dr Friedwardt Winterberg (r) and discoverer of gravity-assisted trajectory Dr Michael Minovitch (l).

...both students and scientists were being inspired to connect and contribute.

Yet most excitingly for interstellar space exploration, attendees were being inspired to create.

It was with this in mind we have crafted the next edition of Starship Congress.

Starship Congress 2015: Interstellar Hackathon

Drawing upon what made Starship Congress 2013 such a success—the combined interest in students and working space professionals in interacting with one another—we name Starship Congress 2015: Interstellar Hackathon.

Starship Congress 2015: Interstellar Hackathon
Starship Congress 2015: Interstellar Hackathon

A hackathon is an intentional community of like-minded individuals temporarily problem-solving together. Our own Interstellar Hackathon will be two days of intentional problem solving by people who love interstellar space science and the dream of building a starship.

Additionally, to make it more enticing and available for students, for the staging of Starship Congress we have chosen a university setting. This year's Starship Congress is being hosted at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. Besides its central location and top-rate reputation for cooperative education, Drexel University is also home to the first-ever student chapter of Icarus Interstellar.

One other thing...

In the time between Starship Congress 2013 and now, a major science fiction film, heavy on the science, has gone on to become an international box-office smash. Namely, Christopher Nolan's INTERSTELLAR.

INTERSTELLAR—explaining relativity to the world.
INTERSTELLAR—explaining relativity to the world.

Before INTERSTELLAR, the challenges of interstellar space exploration were beyond the grasp of most people worldwide. But almost overnight, suddenly millions of people worldwide understood the challenges of interstellar space exploration, what it means, what it takes.

Fans of the idea of interstellar space exploration are now grasping the beginning mechanics of exploring another star system.

For this reason, in ways that we would not have been able to appreciate in 2013, we are looking forward to students and space science professionals working together and hacking out solutions to interstellar space science challenges at the 2015 edition of Starship Congress.

At Starship Congress 2015, we are doubling down on everything that made the first Starship Congress so terrific.

First Speaker—TED Talks Fellow Dr Rachel Armstrong

Keynote Speaker—NASA New Horizons scientist Ralph McNutt

Special Guest—PSU space anthropologist Dr Cameron Smith

New speakers, favorite speakers, workshops, breakaway sessions, and of course hacking sessions—with students who are future professionals working alongside actual space professionals to begin work on bringing about the single greatest exploration mission in the history of humankind, the journey to another star.

Teamwork makes the dream work.

Please support Starship Congress and help support the dream of interstellar travel and building a starship.

Risks and challenges

Again, associated risks are minimal, as the Starship Congress is taking place in early-September in Philadelphia, PA. Reaching our fund-raising goal only insures that this technical summit is properly marketed, documented, and presented. Icarus Interstellar wishes to make as much knowledge surrounding interstellar spaceflight and exploration as publicly available as possible.

IMPORTANT NOTE: As Icarus Interstellar is a non-profit organization, 95% of backing is tax deductible.

Like ALL members of the Icarus Interstellar membership program—aka "Icarii"—Charter members will be assigned a personal enrollment number to be issued on first-come, first-serve basis and is permanent. Members enrollment numbers are given individually one-time and afterwards are non-recyclable. To make this process as fair and equal as possible to all NO ENROLLMENT NUMBERS ARE HELD—ENROLLMENT NUMBERS ARE ISSUED FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE. Obviously, the lower a member's enrollment number the earlier their enrollment and the longer their commitment to interstellar space exploration, to the BUILD A STARSHIP ethos, and to Icarus Interstellar.
To honor the bold and foresightful commitment of Icarus Interstellar's First 100, all 100 Charter Icarii members will receive:
    - Icarus Interstellar Icarii membership card featuring First 100 designation;
    - Personalized stainless steel Icarus Interstellar Icarii Dog Tags embossed with name, year of enrollment, and enrollment number;

If you missed being part of the First 100 AND missed coming on board as a Next 42 member but want to join the Icarus Interstellar “Team Icarii” it's making you a little unsettled (because down deep you still want an early adopter enrollment number), the Section 8 membership reward is your only way to go.
Beginning the Section 8 Charter membership group with Icarus Interstellar Charter MBR (member) enrollment number 143 and finishing with Charter MBR number 150, if you missed the first and second round of Icarus Interstellar Charter memberships, the Section 8 group is your only hope to claim Charter member and early-adopter status.

And as crazy as that sounds, there are only 8.

The Section 8 Charter membership rewards package just nearly as sweet as the First 100, and good in a (slightly) different way than the Next 42 Charter membership rewards package.

The Section 8 rewards package includes:
