About this project
Introducing: The Oak-Honey Whiskey Tumbler
(A collaborative design)
What is the Oak Honey Whiskey Tumbler (OHWT)
A handmade oak whiskey tumbler with a stainless steel base, finished with a propitiatory honey wax. It is specially shaped by hand, one at a time to give it a special shape on the inside to accentuate a taste and aroma that is complex and subtly sweet.
Taking cues from oak barrels and adding sophisticated design innovations the tumbler is a meld of old and new worlds. Beautiful and functional.
Wood selection and shape:
Each tumbler is made from one solid piece of oak that has been carefully selected for its qualities and longevity. Quality and careful selection of the wood is perhaps the most important part of the process. The oak needs to be solid and compact as oak is a long fiber wood with gaps to allow it to breath but pieces with larger gaps need to be selected and removed. Each tumbler is a work of art with subtle differences between very piece. The tumbler is specially shaped to expand towards the bottom to allow greater vapor expansion and better expansion of complex aromas as you drink.
The shape is borrowed from classic glass tumblers that have long been a staple of the industry. Working with an internal hourglass design in wood is a tough challenge but we achieved it and added wider hips at the base and expanded opening for more breath and room to taste with your mouth and nose.
Attention to internal space:
We use specialty milling techniques to expand the base of the tumbler to create a larger space at the bottom to allow aroma and taste to swell and build. This shape has always been elusive in wood and we have mastered the techniques to do them effectively and beautifully. Most attempts at wood tumblers have left the shape of the inside space straight as milling larger forms at the bottom is a difficult task requiring hand milling which is difficult to achieve on larger scales. We have found a technique to allow us to do this and retain a fairly substantial production scale. We can now work with large scale production, handmade milling techniques and quality control over the entire production cycle with the internal milling as standard. We're pretty excited about that :)
The wood treatment and finish, a collaborative effort:
What do we mean when we say "collaborative design"?
This is why we love Kickstarter, you get to be part of the final finish of the tumbler. We finish the tumbler with an innovative mix of honey infused wax and oil.
During the production run we will work with several of our backers to choose the best blend from 5 different options. These will go from neutral aromas to stronger sweet tones. Our "Backer ambassadors" (you can be one if you choose act quick) will participate in tastings.
We will then have these tastings be completely transparent via online live videos for all our backers to participate in. We gather your feedback through surveys and make sure to get all your input then finalize the blend and send off the tumblers straight to you. It's a fun collaborative process that ensures transparency and hones the finish to a fine point.
About the finish:
We created a specialized process to treat the surface of our wood tumbler. We do this for 2 main reasons, to seal oak so that it doesn't take in too much liquid while at the same time allowing it to come in contact with the Whiskey and add to an Oak tone to the drinking experience.
The tumbler is treated with a propitiatory blend of beeswax, natural oils and honey extract to seal the oak and still allow it to breath and take in hints of whiskey tones. This is done by hand, one at a time with extreme attention to the final product, then the tumblers sit and dry for several weeks before they are ready to drink from.
Why an oak wood tumbler:
Lots of folks love the taste of oak with their whiskey and a wood tumbler completes the final trip of the whiskey as its being tasted to provide a last send-off of oak. With the open shape at the bottom of the tumbler, that effect is accentuated. The contoured open top shape allows you to use your nose and your mouth with every sip, the sweet oak tones become more pronounced.
OK, we've been making gear since 2010 and have gotten progressively better at every single part of the process. We've learned to stress the small details. We partner with the best, do quality control ourselves (Just Yossi and Max that is). Each piece goes through the process with a careful hand and a watchful eye. We've learned to grow our ability to produce and not sacrificing quality. This was a hard learned lesson for us as with all entrepreneurs, we've learned from our mistakes and made great strides to turn any situation into a win for our backers. We try to stay humble and communicative while providing you with the best. We couldn't be more aware that there are a lot of lofty promises here on Kickstarter and often the product doesn't match the promise. Well, we do our utmost to live by our word and stand by it till you get the piece you love. Simple.
When will you get your tumbler?
Some important notes on shipping:
We ship direct to you with a tracking number and most packages make it to your door within 10 days. We stress the quality of our shipping and make sure you get your package. Shipping NEEDS to be high quality and we will not use cheap shipping to cut corners. Shipping is the backbone of the contract between us and our backers.
We ship worldwide, everywhere no exceptions and the rates are assigned near every reward. We ship directly to your door with an amazing shipping team that is top notch and proven. You will receive tracking codes and express deliveries wherever you are
Read this if you are outside the U.S.:
Most packages sail through customs without any duty, but some are selected by chance and the recipient gets hit with a duty fee. We have a dedicated team to work through customs issues in most countries and sweat the details on this but since we cant account for every customs agent, if you live in a place that is known for customs issues, we can't vouch for every possibility and extra charge. If you are an international sponsor and receive a tracking number when we ship, track your package daily to make sure it doesn’t get hung up in the system and returned to us. We make every effort to get that bag through customs and directly to you!
Risks and challenges
This is our 8th project so we guess you could call us veterans.
That said, the learning curve for Kickstarter projects for us was and continues to be a challenging incline and we like it that way. Our latest project, the Upper Cut flask was a great success for us as a team of makers and backers and we have learned tons from everything we've done so that we now have a good system in place.
Shipping is always tracked, communication is constant, quality control is the most important piece of the puzzle for us and you our backers are at the center of the experience.
We take full responsibility for our work and take it super seriously, if we need to delay, we let you know. We are confident in our ability to give you the product we advertise and stand behind it. With any change along the way, we communicate and coordinate with our backers.
We're a team and we're here to help.
