About this project
Kickstarter campaign is over, but you can still get a QuarterWave. Head over to
www.myquarterwave.com for more information and to place an order.
WHAT IS THE QUARTERWAVE?
The QuarterWave is a handcrafted Bluetooth speaker system which implements an acoustic transmission line enclosure designed to produce a full-range quality sound. The QuarterWave is designed with the goal to provide music listeners with simple audio solution that looks and sounds brilliant.
The clean lines, gorgeous grains and beautiful stains give each QuarterWave a unique and unmistakable classy appearance. Each QuarterWave starts from quality wood which is precisely cut using a computer numerical controlled router to produce each of the unique layers. Once the layers are assembled and all necessary driver and equipment openings are cut, the enclosure is prepared, cleaned and finished to provide long lasting protection while further enhancing the wood grain.

QUARTERWAVE IN THE NEWS - DT
STRETCH GOAL #1: $15k - FUNDED!
Is your favorite collection of music on your PC computer or Mac that doesn't have built-in Bluetooth capability? If we reach $15k we’ll add a USB-Bluetooth adapter to help you cut down on the cords and connect to your QuarterWave via Bluetooth.
STRETCH GOAL #2: $30k - FUNDED!
We had several suggestions for adding additional QuarterWave colors to the Kickstarter production run which currently includes Natural and Espresso. If we reach $30k we'll add one color and have YOU select it. We will invite everyone to vote for their favorite color, collect them all and add the most popular suggestion to the Kickstarter production run at the end of the campaign. Cast your vote now at: http://www.myquarterwave.com/backers.html
STRETCH GOAL #3: $35k - FUNDED!
If you're connecting more than just your Bluetooth device to the QuarterWave it’s not a problem with the front 3.5mm auxiliary and rear stereo audio inputs. If we reach $35k we'll add a couple cables to help connect your favorite wired devices also.
STRETCH GOAL #4: $50k - FUNDED!
Connecting your favorite wired device to your QuarterWave or just charging your Bluetooth device off the USB charging jack and still want to control the volume from across the room? If we reach $50k we'll incorporate a handy wireless remote to give you even more control.
NEAR-FIELD COMMUNICATION (NFC):
A future option we’re working on, NFC one-touch technology, will allow you to effortlessly pair your devices, connect them through Bluetooth and begin streaming your music with one touch of your NFC compatible smartphone or tablet to the NFC area on the QuarterWave.
The QuarterWave will be available in Natural Color and Espresso Color during the Kickstarter Campaign. Future production runs will include additional colors such as Jet Black, Whitewash, and Mahogany. We would love to hear which color is your favorite.
FORM WITH FUNCTION:
The patent pending QuarterWave speaker enclosure shown below is designed to guide sound waves emitted from the rear of the speakers to prevent cancellation effects on the back surface of the speaker cone. The summation of the front and rear sound waves result in constructive interference producing loud and undistorted sound. The unique layered construction shown below allows us to tune the sound signature and form a rigid structure to reduce unwanted wall resonance.
DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?
Once you get your hands on the QuarterWave we want to hear what you think. How’s the overall sound? How’s the look and touch? How’s the color and size? Should we add any additional features? A review page will be available at www.myquarterwave.com to share your thoughts. Join the journey and let your input shape the future of the QuarterWave.
WHATS THE STATUS?
HARD WORK: We have worked extensively on the QuarterWave sound and visual design and completed our initial prototyping. We have selected the initial production color offering, natural and espresso, and now we need your support to get the QuarterWave from our workbench to your hands.
PROTOTYPING: We have developed relationships with a local CNC partner to produce multiple iterations of our design. Between each iteration we incorporated changes to improve aspects of our initial design including equipment placement, waveguide dimensions, and cutting/production process. Our next steps includes professional laboratory testing and final design tweaks before production.
MANUFACTURE & QA/QC: All production materials and electrical components shall be manufactured, assembled, and shipped to us by our design manufacturer. Final quality assurance and inspection shall be performed prior to shipping to our Backers. Funds raised by our awesome Backers will support the final design efforts, professional lab testing, large material and component orders, and production.
THE TEAM: We have identified our design manufacturing and production team who will assist in final design, testing and scaled production. We will continue to recruit and expand our team to get our rewards to our Backers timely with a strong focus on quality.
MANAGING THE SCHEDULE:
We understand that you want to get your hands on a QuarterWave right away so we expect to start production and begin shipping rewards to our backers in April 2015. The "Estimated Delivery" date provided is when we expect to start shipping those rewards. We hope to beat our production schedule and we will keep our backers up-to-date on their reward status throughout the process. The rewards will be shipped in the order of their support so join our journey and become part of this great project today.
USA Delivery Information
Get your pledge in early, then go back later and add shipping and tax (if applicable). For our backers in the Lower 48 US states shipping costs will vary depending on the destination and backers should contact us with their location information for a shipping estimate. The average shipping cost for domestic backers will be $25. Backers who live in the State of Texas do need to pay Sales Tax. Please add an additional 7.25% onto your pledge amount to cover local sales tax. So for example, if you live in the State of Texas and pledged for the $199 reward, please add an additional $14.43 onto your pledge amount ($14.43 is 7.25% of $199) to cover Texas Sales Tax. If you haven’t added this additional sales tax yet, don't worry it’s easy to do and you can edit the amount you pledge right up until the project ends on the project page.
International Delivery Information
Get your pledge in early, then go back later and add shipping. The QuarterWave will be available for most countries throughout the world and in most cases international backers will have to pay an additional amount for shipping the QuarterWave. International shipping costs will vary depending on the destination and backers should contact us with their location information for a shipping estimate. The average shipping cost for international backers will be $75. International backers can edit the amount pledged to cover the additional shipping cost right up until the project ends on the project page. Get your pledge in early, then go back later and add shipping. International deliveries will be shipped with a standard Customs Declaration Form CN22 with a declared value of $199.
Risks and challenges
Every product production no matter how complex or simple is going to have associated risks and challenges. As we move towards production, some of our key challenges will be labor, compliance testing and certifications, and material/component deliveries.
The QuarterWave is a hand-crafted system which requires a skilled labor force and we are prepared to grow our staff if necessary to support production according to demand. Our goal is to ensure that we maintain high quality during production and that we can produce the volume required to fulfill all orders in a timely manner.
We have selected a federally approved testing/consulting firm to perform the required compliance testing and federal declarations. We have accounted for testing time and expect the testing to go smoothly; however, we are prepared to make design tweaks and adjustments during this testing phase if necessary.
We have developed relationships and maintain constant communication with our design-manufacturer and material suppliers to avoid shipment delays and ensure accurate deliveries to keep production operating efficiently.
If you haven’t already, start by sending us the city and postal code where your QuarterWave will be shipped using the “Contact Me” button/link on the Kickstarter page. Once we confirm your shipping cost we will contact you with payment instructions.
The campaign ended and I live in Texas and I didn’t include the cost for tax in my pledge, what now?
Backers who live in the State of Texas need to pay an additional 7.25% for local state sales tax. Notify us that you’re a Texas resident using the “Contact Me” button/link on the Kickstarter page. We’ll confirm the cost and contact you with payment instructions.
Since shipping costs will vary depending on the destination all Backers should contact us with the city and postal code where their QuarterWave will be shipped. Once you have received your shipping cost you will manually update your pledge amount to include shipping. For example, if you pledged for a QuarterWave at $199 and your shipping cost is $25 you will revise your pledge amount from $199 to $224. Kickstarter does not update your pledge automatically. We have provided some helpful instruction in UPDATE #13 for your reference on how to complete this step, but if you have any questions please contact us before the campaign ends.
Sure. Just increase your pledge by the pledge amount for each extra unit. So Early Adopters would pledge $398 for two, $597 for three, etc. Shipping will be the same for each unit because we’ll have to send each separately. You’ll also have a chance to enter different addresses at the end of the campaign for each QuarterWave.
Within a few weeks following the Kickstarter campaign we'll be sending all Backers a survey so that you can tell us what color you want, where you want your QuarterWave shipped, and any other important details we might need.
When Kickstarter is over the QuarterWave is expected to retail for $399.
Yes. Audio applications of Bluetooth technology in the early 2000’s came with a stigma of poor sound quality, but with time listeners have demanded a matured solution to take advantage of the obvious benefits. Advancements in audio circuits and audio codecs have resulted in carefully designed Bluetooth chips to produce “wired” quality sound. The QuarterWave takes full advantage of these advancements by implementing a CSR Bluetooth chipset with aptX® codec.
Yes. A RCA audio pre-amp output is provided on the rear of the QuarterWave to connect a future QuarterWave Bass speaker available through Smartwood Acoustics with a matching aesthetic of the QuarterWave.
No. The QuarterWave is designed to provide a full-range quality sound without the addition of a separate bass speaker. We understand that hundreds of different music genres will be played on the QuarterWave and some music listeners may prefer a heavier bass component so we are designing the QuarterWave Bass speaker to complement the QuarterWave. We expect the QuarterWave Bass speaker to closely follow the QuarterWave production run.
The initial production run of the QuarterWave on Kickstarter will be released in a Natural and Espresso finish, but future production runs will include additional colors such as Jet Black, Whitewash, and Mahogany. If you have a color recommendation let us know, we would love to hear from you.
Yes. Stereo audio RCA inputs are provided on the rear of the QuarterWave for your non-BT device connections such as a TV.
Yes. A 5V USB charging port is provided on the rear of the QuarterWave to charge your device.
If my laptop doesn’t have built-in Bluetooth connectivity can I still connect it to the QuarterWave?
Yes. You can use a USB-Bluetooth adapter to connect your laptop to the QuarterWave.
Yes. The QuarterWave can be mounted horizontally or vertically to reduce the overall footprint.
The QuarterWave input voltage range is 100-240VAC to accommodate domestic and international Backers.
The power handling rating of the drivers is 15W/30W (RMS/MAX).
