Grow a variety of interesting plants and animals in a self-sustaining Eco system is something we at DuneCraft are very passionate about. Our goal is to increase awareness of plants and animals while engaging in a fun an iterative process. The vivarium will come with all the items necessary to grow a variety of plant types, hatch pre-historic water shrimp and sea serpents. The consumer need only add water, we even provide the soil.
We have sourced our production and tooling for the Vivarium to be built as two complete pieces from eco friendly recycled plastic, the lid and base. The contents of the vivarium are as follows:
- Container with Base, Lid and LED lights
- Snap-in Net Pot
- Shrimp Eggs and Food (could be Sea Faries, Sea Serpents, Sea Dragons, Fish, etc.)
- Lily Pad Seeds
- Rain forest Mix Seeds or Blooming Perennials or Meat Eating Plants
- Germination Disk
- Decorative Decals
- Natural Gravel
The tooling needed for the vivarium is very complex and a large part of our funding will be used to pay for this tooling. We are dedicated to continue our assembly in the United States. Although this is not always the most costly solution, DuneCraft is committed to quality, sustainability and US jobs! Please help us keep this a reality with the Vivarium!
This image below was the first prototype drawing developed for the Vivarium. Using the help of our Art Department this early sketch with rough dimensions was sent to an injection molding company that created a prototype as seen in the first display picture. One of our previous products the LED light cube inspired the LED light concept for for plant and animal health. We are currently experimenting with using a square light rather than the circular lights as shown in the prototype diagram.
After sourcing our molding, we ran into problems with the container being water tight. Through research and testing we discovered that that Vivarium base must be one piece in order for the tank to be reliably water tight. We went back to the drawing board and redesigned the Vivarium to be one solid base and have every extension piece unrelated to the base's ability to hold water. This diagram represents the base, which holds water as one solid component and separated out the other items that are pieces to be added into the Vivarium.
After we developed a water tight mold we moved onto the LED lighting issue. We needed an LED light that was affordable but would also produce the right amount of light to stimulate plant growth and supply the other living creatures with the right amount. From some of our previous products we were able to to collect data. We started with round LED lights and have moved into a more square base light that will fit on the top of the Vivarium.
Our projected timeline for the completion of this project is very competitive. We have the tooling designed and are awaiting only the funding. The molds will take 3 months to produce and our first run will be anywhere between 5,000 to 10,000 molds.
The LED lights are on order, we are using a nonprofit US based company to manufacture the lights at a competitive price. The lead time on the lights are about 2 months from the date of a successful funding.
The seed sourcing and hydro pump have already been sourced and purchased. This product will be ready for mainstream production 3 months after our successful funding.
Thank you for reading about the Vivarium and be sure to check out the rewards. We have most of our rewards stocked and ready to go and can't wait to send them out.
Risks and challenges
Producing, manufacturing and selling a successful product is a complicated process. The following development plan for the Vivarium concept will require successfully sourcing and running our tooling while a) using eco friendly material, b) complying with the highest level of safety standards and c) keeping the cost down to provide the product at a discount to our consumer.
Our development plan and track record with not only designing, but manufacturing and selling products is unmatched and we a dedicated team ready to make this a reality with your help!
Setbacks always arise when creating a new product, and we are sure to have our share here with the vivarium. What I can say with complete confidence is that we are determined to create this concept into a reality within 30 days of funding this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
