This project is about the "Chicharra" (cicada in spanish), a small sci-fi utility hopper craft. By supporting this project you'll get the STL files needed to print your own ship, and depending on the pledge level supported, you'll get the military armed version too and even additional terrain to create a small landing facility for the model.

It is intended to be used as scenery for 28mm Sci-Fi Miniature Wargaming and tabletop Role Playing games, and it will fit perfectly on your Infinity gaming tables.

All models shown were printed using a low budget home printer. A lot of care has been taken during modeling to achieve the best prints a cheap home machine could get.

The best about 3D printing technology for wargames, is that you can print as much models as you need. If you want to create a complex scenario with three or more fully equipped landing pads, with lots of containers and landed hoppers, you can do it inexpensively! A FDM 3D printer is becoming a must have on every gaming enthusiast workbench, and starting from less than 150€.

This model is based on a Paper Model we've made for Infinity many years ago. Back then we've made some great models that you can still find on many gaming boards around the globe. With the years passing, paper models and color printing has left the throne and now 3D printing technologies are the new King as home desktop printers had become cheaper and affordable for many more gamers and crafters. So the logical step for us was to move from paper models to 3D models ready to be printed using FDM (fused deposition modeling) technologies.

Currently I've already made a new version for the old ChickenHawk that you can find in Antenociti's Workshop. Chicharra was perfect to go for a STL release instead of full resin model release as it is small and easy to print, with not much different parts to be printed.

Chicharra role is based on real life "little bird" and Kiowa helicopters. That is, spec-ops transport, close air support and reconnaissance. Just like those two birds, Chicharra is a civilian craft model turned into a military warhorse.

Chicharra started as a personal project for personal use, just like other models I've made you can find on thingiverse. But soon I realized that it was taking me a lot of time for modeling, testing, sorting printing problems and enhancing some parts, modelling additional items, testing again and so forth.

So, counting with the support and good comments of the Infinity game forums, I finally decided to go for a Kickstarter campaign.

With this project I'm not only trying to afford all time invested on the model and terrain, but to reach many more people and guarantee I can dedicate addtional time for the additional models and stretch goals. I'm specially willing to start with the ramp down and interior stretch goal, but that will be tricky and require a lot of work during print tests. A home-printed vehicle with nice interior is a huge step forward, so we are very excited to reach the goal!

Our biggest efforts were dedicated to create a great model to go along with your armies and heroes, that even the lowest end printers can handle getting awesome results. One of our rules is to be able to print it without any support, and to achieve that, the model was created from the very beginning with FDM no support printing in mind. We think that is a big difference from other STL files oriented campaigns on Kickstarter.

Another fact to take into account is that we are not releasing any part that hasn't been tested previously.

For the final release, there will be a guidelines booklet to help you align the parts properly (as they're intended to be printed) with photos of my printing process, building steps and some suggested color schemes.

This project is about the Chicharra. But we wanted to add terrain to go along with the hopper. After some time spent thinking about which terrain pieces will fit better this project, we finally found out that a landing pad, supporting facilities and containers make sense. So the "Full Set" pledge will cover all the terrain pieces you need to land, rearm and refuel your birds.

Some elements of the landing facilities
Some elements of the landing facilities

LANDING PAD is the biggest piece as it holds tightly a Chicharra on top. Even if your printer is 100x100x100mm small, you can print the big landing dish in 4 pieces getting fantastic results. Landing pad is supported on 4 to 8 pillars and includes side access platform and stairs to access the top. Stair has been designed to get detail and great results on any printer, so it is a great piece even for your personal scenery pieces (ladders and stairs are usually hard to create or find).

40mm modular stackable containers. This are small fuel containers that can be stacked and covered with a top plate. You can stack as many as you need and you can use one of them to break lines of sight below the landing pad.

100mm modular stackable containers. They are compatible with the 40mm containers, but are higher and slightly different. Both 40mm and 100mm take advantage of the 3d Printing benefits, so there are supports and ladders that you don't have to print and glue, they're integrated in the model and result in an awesome 3D effect that you usually don't achieve on your improvised terrain parts (as cans, cd spindles and the like).

Additional cargo containers with different shapes that can be printed stacked or one by one. We are still working on them.

Rearm small packs. This ones are smaller than containers and will be used as partial cover instead. Will represent batches of rockets and railgun magazines stacked.

Communications console to be used near the pad. Big enough to be used as blocking terrain.

We are Marcos Hidalgo and Miriam G. Sastre.  Among other projects, we live  together and share our passion for wargames, boardgames and role playing games. And we are trying to imbue this passion to our little Ulises who already is a real adventurer by himself.

We've been hosting the site TopoSolitario.com, which is a reference for any sci-fi miniature wargamer as its content has been used thousands of times on gamimg tables all around the world.

We never started a Kickstarter project on our own, but we have made content for many other projects, small art for Stephen Coffey's roleplaying aid cards, the Superhawk dropship for Antenociti's Forward Base, and the complete design of the gaming mats for Micro Art Studio's Infinity Terminus Segments. Outside the Kickstarter projects we've been collaborating with Corvus Belli since the very beginning of Infinity the Game, and we designed the terrain for Operation:Icestorm, Usariadna army pack, and Operation: Red Veil among many others.

This project is not a big one, and it has almost no risk at all. But as we dedicated a lot of effort and passion on THE HOBBY, we think this time we can reach a lot more people and justify the time invested on all these models.

And if all goes great, we are opening a huge and gold plated door to future projects with your much appreciated help.

Risks and challenges

There are no risks involved as project has no physical distribution.

All models for "Civilian Pilot" and "Warbird" pledges are done, and were tested thoughtfully with home based FDM printers.
So you'll receive the Chicharra model you pledged for (both Civilian and Warbird if you pledged for level 2 or 3) soon after the campaign ends (ending tasks and file building/sending, can take up to three weeks).

Almost all models for the "Full Set" pledge are done and most of all has been tested. "Full Set" will be sent later as some models may require additional work, and some of the stretch goals couldn't have been fully modeled as the campaign ends.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Files are provided "as-is" and do not come with any support structures or g-code for specific printers. You will need to import the STL files into your relevant software and create supports or in-fill as required by your 3D printer/software. Parts have been designed to be printed without the need of supports, but quality and settings of your printer may require the use of supports for some overhangs.

IMPORTANT: STL files will be available for PRIVATE USE ONLY. If you're interested in acquiring a commercial license to print & sell please contact us and we can talk about it.

All 3D files will be Watermarked, this means that each backer will receive a unique set of STL files with a coded watermark in them to identify those parts to that backer.

Supporting the campaign and purchasing the STL files does not grant any rights to either the Design of the Models (ship or terrain) nor the individual Part files, altering the files for commercial purposes, or uploading the files for others to use (for free or otherwise) is strictly prohibited.
