Wanderboy depicts the final journey of Paco, an imaginary boy and his lifelong friend Ben, the old man who grew out of him long ago.
My intention was to make a surreal adventure, a poetic reflection on existence through the eyes of an Imaginary Friend. Coming from animation and illustration where we mostly create fantastic worlds, I wanted to bring that background to my first live action film. This project will not only benefits from these influences through concept and plot, but visually as well through sets, costumes and props.
Although Wanderboy is a standalone film, it brings a thematic I am currently developing for other projects - a feature and a pilot episode:
« Everything you can imagine is real » summarizes it perfectly. That quote from Pablo Picasso sprinkles a magical element over Descartes's dualism, as well as Lamartine's "Inanimate objects, do you have a soul" philosophy. In Wanderboy, imaginary friends are real.
Shooting Wanderboy was an amazing experience. For the past year we created costumes, art, masks, we filmed in many locations, and brought the concept of Wanderboy to life. It was all thanks to the support and advices of our friends, and nothing would have been possible without our amazing cast and crew!

The biggest challenge for a filmmaker is to write a good story. The second one is to finance it! But sometimes getting money means losing the creative control and that is why many filmmakers chose the independent route VS big studio system.
I believe in this project so much that I decided to jump the gun and use my personal savings to make it happen. We did so much so far but it's not over, and now we need your help to bring Wanderboy to life. With your support, this film will be done the right way, and thanks to you the production will go as intended by its creator. Crowdfunding is just awesome that way, and as you're already went as far as reading this page, you have my thanks for being here!
We finishing filming, did a solid 15 minutes edit, and love what we have! So what now? Two words: Post-production. It includes several crucial steps that are needed to bring Wanderboy to life:
Sound recording & sound design: extremely important part of the creative work, building a surreal mood, bringing this fantasy to life. Also the voice of Paco comes through a recorder he has around his neck, for that we are recording Ashton's voice in post, just like we'd do for animation.
Music: When the sound design is done, our composer will create the music that will bring joy and tears. I believe audio makes 50% of a film.
Special effects and grading, we want our movie to look fantastic, after all we shot with an awesome Red dragon in 4K - and anamorphic lenses courtesy of Atlas Lens Co.
Finally, we'd love a DCP (Digital Cinema Package) for theatrical exhibition, and submission to festivals. Doesn't a film's life really start when audience have access to it?
We did not come empty handed as we prepared some pretty darn nice rewards for you. After all that's the cool part of crowdfunding am I right!?
All the props were hand made in the studio
Risks and challenges
It's always a challenge to tell a story, and no matter what you write, in the end it has to be doable. Making a film is a complex adventure, but that's why it is so rewarding. Crowdfunding is a game changer for independent filmmakers who do not have studio backing, and it allows contributors to be part of a creative adventure they could not be involved with otherwise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
