The Story So Far:
We grew up living for the times that we got to go to each others' houses to play video games, tabletop games, and just generally nerd out. These days, the nerd lifestyle has become a bit more isolating. The video game industry seems to be pushing us to game in separate locations, communicating through headphones rather than being able to actually give each other a high five and share our excitement in person. Tabletop campaigns have become hard to organize with most of them ending much earlier than they should because of scheduling issues, and board game nights are easily thrown off course by that one tag-along who wasn't really interested in the first place. The Player 2 Guildhall aims to fix all of that by providing a place for those who truly love this lifestyle to be able to come together and share their passions. It will be organized as a private club, meaning that only those who are as passionate about gaming as you are will be around appreciating your interests as well as introducing you to their own. The fact that we are private also lets us allow BYOB, which should be exciting to anyone who doesn't like paying $10 for a cocktail, or who is always disappointed by not being able to crack one open at a hobby shop.
The idea started three years ago when we began to wonder why we weren't allowed to bring a beer to our local Magic tournaments. We naturally began to question why there didn't seem to be many bars around that catered to nerds. Why aren't there bars that show esports on TV, host tournaments for video games or run tabletop campaigns? So we began working on a business plan. We even went so far as to go back to school to get some better business education so that we could refine the plan from a more informed perspective. We eventually started to take our personal collection of games to bars in Wyoming to host board game and video game events to see how the idea went over. One year later, we were in Denver doing the same thing with a much expanded library and a new virtual reality setup to boot. Every event we put on we have had participants letting us know how much they appreciate what we are doing, so we figured it was time to start planning a physical location.
How Will We Use This Money?
That brings us to where we are now: opening up a small, intimate location on Capitol Hill in Denver. This is happening! It is not dependent on this campaign, but rather subsidized by it. We have everything worked out to open in November. This campaign is simply meant to sell memberships so that we can start out strong, rather than start from zero. It is also a way for us to reward our loyal patrons (of our Nerd's Night Out events) by offering these memberships at a reduced rate. Most of the money from this campaign will go to making sure that we have an extensive runway (money to keep the lights on while we grow). If we exceed our goal, we also have several planned expansion projects for the future including building several high end PCs, more furniture to be able to seat more people (specifically a few extra tables and chairs to set up in the VR station for larger events), rule books and miniatures for various tabletop games, as well as simply expanding our game libraries (board games, video games, and VR). If you contribute to a specific goal (i.e. decorations or games) all of that money will be put toward that end.
The guildhall will open at 3 on weekdays (we are closed on Mondays) and at noon on weekends. We will stay open until at least 10 on weekdays and at least midnight on weekends. The reason we say "at least" is because we aren't going to close if there are plenty of people hanging out having fun. If people are caught up having a blast together until 4am, we are going to keep the party rolling, not kick them out. That said, if ten o'clock comes around (12 on weekends) and we don't have anybody playing, we are going to pack it up.
Memberships will cost $25 a month for the basic. This will get you in the door anytime you want, and enroll you in our EXP reward program. At this level, you will pay $2/hr while you are at the guildhall.
Unlimited memberships will cost $125 per month. With this membership, you won't have to pay any hourly rates. You are allowed to bring in one guest per visit who won't have to pay hourly rates or for a daily membership while you are here with them! You also have access to the EXP program.
We will have daily trial memberships available for $7 ($20 family deal). This does not grant access to the EXP program.
We will also be offering yearly memberships at discounted rates. A basic yearly will cost $250 and an unlimited yearly membership will cost $1250. This means that you will get 2 months free!
There are family deals for two adults and their kids. These will cost $60 for a basic monthly, $250 for an unlimited monthly, $600 for a yearly basic, and $2,500 for a yearly unlimited.
Our events will include weekly Magic the Gathering nights (a variety of formats, unofficial), weekly tabletop sessions (this will take a bit of time to organize so it won't happen at launch), learn a board game nights, tournaments, movie nights ( on our 100 inch HD projector), etc.
We will host monthly members meetings where you can have a hand in shaping the guildhall into the clubhouse that you have always wanted.
We won't have food and beverages for sale (zoning issues) but there are a lot of nearby delivery locations, a Trader Joe's a block away, as well as several food and drink prizes available through our EXP reward system. Remember that all alcohol is BYOB.
The EXP reward program
Every member will earn EXP for a wide variety of participation such as attending events, participating in our monthly and weekly challenges, placing in tournaments, wagering points on PvP competitions, and simply showing up.
These points can be spent on an arcade style wall of prizes including drinks (non alcoholic), snacks, hats, shirts, gaming hours, monthly memberships, and eventually we will offer even bigger prizes such as a new headset, graphics card, or a speed pass to Comic Con.
These points will also be logged to your cumulative total, which will level you up RPG style with rewards of game time, food or drink, etc. for each level you achieve.
That's just about it. We are aiming to create the best gaming hangout in Denver. If you would like to be a part of that dream, pledge a little money or buy yourself a membership. We have plenty of reward options for both those who want to be members and for those who want to support us from afar. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. We will answer them to the best of our ability.
Risks and challenges
Thankfully, there aren't many risks for this project. Liability is one of the only real concerns, as alcohol is involved. However, as we are not providing the alcohol and every member will have to sign a liability waiver taking responsibility for their own drinking habits (as well as signing a pledge to NEVER give alcohol to any minors in attendance) our liability risks will be quite low, and covered by our insurance.
Startup costs are already covered, and we have a decent runway. This campaign is just aimed to help extend that runway even further, so that we can be certain that we will be in business for many years to come. Anything extra will be put toward making the guildhall even better.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
