Set aside the dice bags and wizard hats, my dorks—we're going to SPACE! A new novel from Matt Vancil, author of Hopjockey and creator of The Gamers and JourneyQuest.
In a distinctly Trekkian universe, mankind has finally reached the stars! But we never shed capitalism along the way, and that lerd’s only gotten worse.
This future is no utopia. Forget diplomacy—humanity’s presence in space is focused solely on seizing exoplants and extracting their resources. The ships of the Coalition are interstellar company towns, run by indifferent AIs and designed to keep their crews in constant debt. Inequality is rampant—if you’re wearing a red crew shirt, life sucks: you’re overworked in hazardous conditions while under constant surveillance and living on top of one another. And you have to pay for your own health care. And the whole time, the smirking officers are telling you the only reason you’re not enjoying the good life is because you’ve chosen to stay poor. So, nothing at all like the world today.
After surviving fifteen years in a red shirt, Webb is nearly burned out. She joined up like any starry-eyed kid did: to get her own ship. But that’s never going to happen—not now that the officers loathe her for being the crew’s elected (and powerless) representative, even as she’s trying to break out of the enlisted ranks herself. But rank has little to do with leadership, and hers will be put to the test when the starship Independence collides saucer-first with with a threat they’re completely unprepared for: aliens that don’t look like us.* When the ship’s social order breaks down from a truly alien threat, it’s falls to Webb to save the crew, the ship—and herself.
*You can have sex with most aliens. A lot of recruits (and backers) sign up for that.
Read a preview chapter from The Fatal Frontier:
Matt Vancil, a writer, filmmaker, and narrative designer from Tacoma. I wrote and directed the Gamers movies and created the web series JourneyQuest with Zombie Orpheus Entertainment and Dead Gentlemen Productions. I wrote video games for mobile giant King, and my work has been featured on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. I’ve written three other books and I currently teach filmmaking at DigiPen, aka “Nintendo University.” I may have totally lifted this from my bio.
The novel isn’t written yet, and I’d like to change that. The rest of it is mapped out and ready to go—I just need the funds to finish and publish it.
This is where I could use your help. I’m sure you’re familiar with crowdfunding by now, so I’ll just stick to the highlights.
You can pledge for a copy of the novel as a print, electronic, or audio book. Or all three.
You can also—and this is pretty cool—have a canon effect on the narrative. Every backer will have the name they give me listed by rank in the crew manifest at the back of the book. Those of you receiving death certificates get to specify how you died in the line of duty. And some of you will get to name red shirts and officers who will die horribly (or have their horrible deaths referenced) in the novel.
Uh… spoilers, I guess.
The artwork we commissioned for the pins is in! These could be yours!
$15,000 – Brian S. Lewis records audio book
If we hit this goal, everyone's favorite undead clerical power gamer will record the audio book for The Fatal Frontier. Don't we all need more Mr. Lewis in our ears?
If the campaign is successful, our target month for delivery will be December 2019. If you’ve backed one of my campaigns before, you may have noticed a little… unintentional flexibility with the delivery dates. That’s why this one’s projected so far out.
Shipping will be handled after the campaign through BackerKit, where you can pick up additional copies and other works. Estimated shipping costs are:
- $3.99 – United States
- $6.99 – Canada
- $12.99 – Everywhere else
Risks and challenges
As with any creative project, unforeseen circumstances can arise. The main challenge with this novel will be hitting the projected release date. I will keep backers updated if and when the delivery timeline changes.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
