Have you seen the Yellow Sign?
We are getting very close to the second stretch goal and it looks like it will happen so its high time that I posted the design.
In the King in Yellow stories there is a curious symbol that if viewed even by accident makes the viewer susceptible to madness or possession by the King in Yellow or one of his heirs. Its very much like the description of a monster that anyone who saw it was killed by it. How would there be a description if every one died who saw it, The yellow sign is the same. Chambers is very vague in his description - the only line describing it as thus:
"I opened the box. On the pink cotton inside lay a clasp of black onyx, on which was inlaid a curious symbol or letter in gold. It was neither Arabic nor Chinese, nor, as I found afterwards, did it belong To any human script."
William Chambers from "The King in Yellow"
There is a popular depiction of the Yellow Sign. The symbol was created in 1989 by the excellent writer Kevin Ross for the "Call of Cthulhu Roleplaying Game" published by Chaosium. We are not using that symbol, we are making our own, new version of the Yellow Sign for this campaign. Many fans know and love that symbol and you might ask why we aren't using it, you see it used all over the place. Well we have 2 reasons. First it is Chaosium's symbol, I've never heard of them enforcing copyright on it but we really don't want to use another company's property. However, the main reason we are not using it is out of respect for Kevin Ross. Several years ago Heather contacted Kevin to see if she could incorporate the symbol into a painting that she was doing called "Chamber's Maid".
Kevin was very pleased that she had asked and gave her his blessing. As for using the symbol commercially, these were his actual words:
A lot of artists have utilized the Sign in their art in one form or another, and I generally don't have a problem with it. I tend to get excited only if people use the Sign as a selling point for commercial purposes, such as using it on jewelry or T-shirts or dice or what-have-you that they intend to sell.
So I have made my own version based on Chambers vague description. Here is a mock up of what I plan for the seals to look like. Heather and I are very pleased with it and we hope that you will be too.
We are also heading into the last week tomorrow and like a broken record I'll end with my common plea. We are trying hard to get the word out but you can help. You have already pledged your support with your money but if you know anyone (who you are not planning on sending a card to) who might like this or you are part of any forums or groups that you think would like hearing about this project, please share it. The more successful that we are, the more projects like this we can make for you.
