My name is Daniel Gelon and along with my wife, illustrator Heather Hudson, we are Studio WonderCabinet. Our goal is to make the awesome art and products that embrace the magical and the fantastic.
We love giving and receiving holiday cards, but best of all we love giving and receiving cards that reflect our special view of the universe. For several years we've made our own cards, by hand, but this year we want to do more. This year we want to have a Lovecraft Christmas.
H.P. Lovecraft was a weird fiction writer in the 20’s and 30’s who combined horror and science fiction, making the new genre of “Cosmic Horror." Lovecraft's "C'thulhu Mythos" stories center around a giant space god, C'thulhu, who sleeps under the ocean in the sunken city of R'lyeh. One day R'lyeh will rise, and Cthulhu will awaken and go forth to wreak havoc on the earth.
Heather and I are tremendous Lovecraft fans, as are many of our friends. We had ideas… so many ideas… too many ideas for just one card. So we decided to make four. We're creating four original C'thulhu Christmas Cards, with original artwork by Heather Hudson. We're planning to get them professionally printed and offer them to the world.
We have 4 cards planned. The card paintings are finished! We have chosen a printer and costed materials. As Lovecraft would say “The stars are right”. Each of the 5 by 7 inch cards will come with its own Cthulhu Holiday Green envelope.
We need your help
This is where you come in. We need your help to offset printing costs. We would like to have enough funding to print cards for both the Kickstarter rewards and to stock them for next year. Timelines are tight but we have printers' assurances that printing will start right after the Kickstarter finishes and we can ship cards out in good time for you to send them for the holidays. We want to get them into your hands early in the first week of December (we’re shooting for the 1st of December). Because of the tight timing we are only going to be offering physical cards to patrons in the United States. If you live in Europe or even Canada, we can offer you a downloadable PDF so you can print your own cards. We found that shipping outside of the USA would cost more than the cards themselves and that there was little guarantee that those cards would reach our supporters before Christmas.
We also have a limited supply of 5.5 x 4.25 inch (A2) blank C'thulhu themed note cards to supplement your Christmas cards that are usable year round. They would be perfect for thank you cards or even birthday cards. Please note that these are physically smaller than the Christmas cards. These 2 images will not be included in the PDF.
$3000 - Goal Achieved!
At $3,000.00 Each card will come with a delightful Cthulhu-Christmas themed 2" sticker to seal the envelope. The sticker image will not be included in the PDFs.
$4000 - Goal Achieved!
At $4,000.00 Let's spice up the envelopes! We'll add a delightful graphic with a holiday-tentacle design to the outside of the envelope. Like the sticker, the envelope art will not be included in the PDF.
$5000 - Goal Achieved!
At $5,000.00 This level of funding would exceed all our expectations, so we add an entirely new card featuring original art to all sets! Every pack or PDF of four goes to five. We will bet Marsh gold that you want this stretch goal to happen. The fifth card will feature the Innsmouth Carolers, spreading some discordant harmonies this Yuletide. This card will be in the PDF.
At $7,500.00 we are going to get one of our past Christmas cards (The Dragon Wreath) professional printed. Heather spent some extra time sprucing up the art. This is 5x7 (A7 envelope) like the other Christmas cards, the inside of the card says "Presentation is everything. Have a happy holiday". This card will be a little different. Since it is more fantasy than Lovecraft it will not come with the sticker seal or the tentacles printed on the envelope. To set it apart it will come with a ruby red envelope. This card WILL be in the PDF.
Who are we?
Heather paints the pictures, Daniel handles the rest.
Daniel has over 25 years of art experience. He has done illustration, UX, graphic design, production and art direction. He has illustrated Magic cards, created logos for DC comics, art directed Dungeons and Dragons books and has worked on various video games. He is obsessed with machines made of paper.
Heather Hudson is a frequently digital fantasy artist with a traditional paint sensibility and a love of early-20th century popular culture. She’s worked on tabletop and hobby games including Hasbro's “Magic; the Gathering” and Pagan Publishing's modern Mythos RPG “Delta Green.” Past Lovecraftian projects she's illustrated include "Casino R'lyeh, the Lovecraft Poker Deck," and "Mother Hydra's Mythos Rhymes." Currently she divides her time between commissioned illustration, personal projects and creating her own fantasy world somewhere between Oz and the Dreamlands. She has a fondness for illuminating monsters.
Risks and challenges
The deadlines on this project are tight, but we have left some wiggle room in it. The printer will have all the files before the Kickstarter ends and we will be getting color proofs of them early so even before the surveys are done the cards will be on press. We have printed cards and used this printer before so we are familiar with the process. We still have 2 pieces of art left to finish but we foresee no problems having them done and shown to the backers well before the campaign's end.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
