Let's get straight to it. Here's Jeff with the news you didn't want to hear. -

--------

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to make up enough time for me to say that we’ll definitely be seeing books before the holiday. The various components (cases, jackets, text files, gloss layers, etc.) have been approved in their proof stages, and are awaiting press-time. Barring any last minute issues, they are slated to be off-press just past mid-month. Shipping and distribution will begin before Christmas,  but it’s unlikely that they will be in your hands along with the Christmas pudding and wassail.

There has been one big sticking point from our printer/supplier, and that has been the slipcases for the numbered editions. I’ve held fast to the idea that this has to be a high-end case; - heavy boards, with two foil stamps and a blind stamp - something to make a statement, and clearly separate the numbered edition from the standard hard-case copies. Slipcases aren’t an item that is commonplace in book production these days, and many (of the remaining) printers are not set up to produce them. It also turns out that their definition of a slipcase, and what I had in mind, were somewhat different. So we’ve had to readjust, get new estimates, and find out exactly what they can get us.

This being said; the numbered collectors editions will not be ready to ship at the same time as the standard hard and softcover copies. Many of those copies need sketch cards mailed with them as well, which will require additional individual handling.

I certainly don’t want to hold the standard copies any longer than necessary. As the hard and softcover copies come off press, they will ship as soon as we can get them out, and the slipcased copies will follow as soon as we get them. No orders will change, though some will now ship in two boxes instead of one.

As for the sketch cards— all 400 originals are now safely at Full Steam Press. Meanwhile, Pete Venters is making the final touches to the digital files for use in the printed card set and the promo cards.

When I have more news on the slipcase dates, or when then first books have shipped, you’ll hear it here.

Jeff

--------

Many of you may have given up on the idea that the book was going to be in your hands by Christmas. We hadn't. The fact is that the schedule was really close - "too close to call" as they say - until just this week. Any announcement either way prior to this would have been simply premature.

We're deeply sorry that you'll not have The Gathering by Christmas. We tried everything to get them to you in time, except reducing the quality of the product.

Speaking of quality. here's a quick look at the lovely work on the actual casing of the book for the hardcover and numbered editions (which sits beneath the dust jacket). This is one of the proofs that was sent to Jeff for his approval, so a few things may have changed on the final product.

Again, we are sorry that this won't be in your hands in time for Christmas.

Is this just for the collectors editions? I've sent a few emails with no reply about the regular edition (because you asked to be contacted if anyone didn't have theirs). Can we get an update on when any missing books will be mailed out?

Or at least an acknowledgement that you are aware that it wasn't sent out and that it will be taken care of?

      Thanks!

The books are being printed right now.

We should have a new update this coming week.

Are we getting a confirmation on when they ship? Tracking number or at least a group email saying yes they are in their way. i keep worrying I missed it.

@Ian This is the casing for the two editions, that which sits under the cover. The cover is the dust jacket which is not seen here.

Too bad about not getting it in time for Christmas, but that's fine. I will stand by quality over speed.

However, I am curious - is that the cover for BOTH the numbered collector's edition and the hardcover, when the CE is supposed to have a unique design? Thanks.

A Christmas deadline is meaningful when you invest more than $200 to get extra copies for your friends and family. If this was $20 or $40 bucks, it might not be a big deal, but we are talking about hundreds of dollars, which I don't throw around lightly.

    8. futurepastimes on

A Christmas deadline is only meaningful if one was willing to give this book away. Mine will have to be pried from my cold dead hands. Still happily waiting - art takes time.

Happy to hear that it's coming!(even if it's a bit late). A few months extra for something this cool is no big deal to me. Also, weren't additional artists added later during the campaign? I backed this right away and it has even more content then when I originally pledged.

I have no problem waiting. This product is looking better and better and there's no reason to sacrifice any of the quality just to get it out sooner. Take as much time as you need. It's looking great!

    11. Jonathan Canfield on

You've been a wonderful kickstarter to follow this entire time. i enjoyed every bit and appreciate your updates. i've seen many a kickstarter crash and burn and completely disregard the people who backed it. you guys have done nothing of the sort, have been extremely nice, and we all know you've done the best you can with what you have. thank you for everything.

    12. Jason Whitehorn on

Thanks for the update. I think most of us understand, I know I sure do.

As others have said, take your time and focus on the quality. I've been excited and ready to hold this book since it was announced in Feburary, I can wait a little longer :-)

    13. Mark Aronowitz on

Wow guys! That looks crazy nice. Well worth waiting for and Jeff and Pete's efforts are to be applauded. Very few know the extent both of these fine gentlemen have gone through to get this done. I hope everyone knows that both you guys have other work and families as well and to be very thankful for this project. Mark's Comics & Collectibles has been and will be fully supportive throughout and after this project has been released.

Clinton, you must be new here. Only 3 months late for a Kickstarter project is faster than the norm. Estimates change. Thats what makes them estimates.

    15. MistWing SilverTail on

Hi there. I just wanted to let you know I understand about unintended delays (being a former computer programmer, I was subjected to them). I do want to thank you for keeping us informed about what's going on. I do appreciate that.

      Thanks

You're fortunate to have so many apologists, but I will not be one of them. If I turned in a project three months late, I would lose my job. Your apology is empty words without any action to back it up. I don't accept that you are sorry.

    17. Elton Borges Mesquita on

The case looks pretty! But I will be more than happy with my softcover too.

    18. Tim Winkler on

This goes beyond my expectations. The casing looks amazing. Thank you !

    19. Ryan L. Sittler on

That casing looks fantastic. I'm with the others. Take your time. It looks like the end result is going to excellent.

Sounds good to me, take all the time that is needed. Quality is what counts and it's simply going in my collection anyway, so I'll gladly take it whenever it shows up!

    21. Frille on

This is of course as fine as it can be. Yes, a bummer for those who wanted to give it as a christmas gift, but please, please do not in any way cut back on anything you originally planned in order to make a deadline. I'd much rather take a glorious product late than something you feel is lacking, sooner.

Too bad hearing about the slipcase issue. Hopefully that will come out nicely anyway.

Thank you so much for all the hard work you pour into this. Again, please let it take the time it takes. I'm fairly sure all backers understand, and support, the process needed. I consider this a once-in-a-lifetime-product, so it can take any time it needs.

      Many thanks. : )

I think you guys are doing a great job and am honored to have my name in the back of this book! :D
