In the twenty year history of Magic: The Gathering® there has never been a book devoted to the artists and their vision. The Gathering is that book!
Over thirty five of the original Magic artists have reunited to create new artwork, many of the pieces based on their favorite or most popular Magic cards.
Available in multiple formats - softcover, hardcover, and the numbered collector's edition - this limited release art book is a must-have for anyone that loved the early days of Magic art.
In June 1993, a fledgling company called Wizards of the Coast launched the world's first collectible card game called Magic: The Gathering®. It was an instant hit that within a year was a worldwide phenomenon.
The game's success was driven by its collectibility, a multitude of card powers, and endless possibilities for deck construction. And one more factor - the artwork. All of the cards featured new pieces of fantasy art created by a pool of wildly diverse talent. These artists defined the look of Magic: The Gathering® and are still fondly remembered by players and collectors alike.
All of the artists involved in The Gathering art book had complete creative freedom. Some chose to commemorate the 20th anniversary with a re-imagining of one of their early Magic cards, while others chose to focus on their artistic development in the intervening years. This has resulted in a rare collection of art demonstrating that same amazing, eclectic range of talents and styles that was the hallmark of early Magic sets.
Here's the latest roster of artists!
The Gathering is a lavish, full-color, perfect bound 112 page book measuring 9.5” by 8.25” and is printed in the U.S.A. The majority of the book’s print run will be available in softcover and hardcover.
The limited numbered collector’s edition features a special dust jacket and slipcase with a cover design and foil stamping that is unique to this edition. This edition is limited to 500 copies.
Each double page spread is dedicated to a single classic Magic artist. Here they'll share their thoughts and anecdotes, and showcase a painting, most created especially for The Gathering.
The book also features a foreword by the game's creator, Richard Garfield, and an afterword by the game's original art director (and designer of the famous Magic card-back), Jesper Myrfors.

For a complete explanation of what add-ons are and how to purchase them, check out Update 17.
* The Library Add-on is a special option where a softcover edition of The Gathering is mailed to a U.S. library of your choice. You will be asked for the library's address when you receive the survey. If the library's address isn't legit, your $25 will be refunded.
The playmats come in two designs, A & B below. You can order either or both, or multiples. They measure 14" by 24" and have a 1/16" thick rubber underside much like a mouse pad.
Some of the upper reward tiers feature the numbered collector's edition book accompanied by two Collector's Edition Sketch Cards, each featuring one-of-a-kind hand drawings from random The Gathering artists.
These beauties measure 6" by 9" and are suitable for framing. Here's a preview of the sketch cards!
Within the pages of The Gathering you'll find dragons, goblins, elves, angels, demons, and all manner of wonders and horrors. But why take our word for it? Check out the images below, and then check out the updates for even more paintings created for the book!
And check out our Facebook page for early sneak peeks at the art too!
We hope you're as excited as we are to own this little piece of... well... magic!

Risks and challenges
Full Steam Press LLC is an effort driven by Jeff A. Menges, one of the original Magic artists. He's had over twenty-five years experience in book publishing and that valuable experience has already helped us avoid some significant pitfalls. However, he's very aware that this project is a big undertaking!
Gathering (no pun intended) all of the artists for this book has certainly been a challenge—but we have enough artists on board to make this book happen and there are more we are working with. No, we're not saying who. We don't wan't to disappoint the fans of the original artists, so we won't announce a name until that artist is confirmed.
This project began because the artists felt there should be a celebration of Magic's 20th anniversary. They've all taken a chance on this project—and asked for no upfront payment for their artwork. Hopefully the project does well enough that we can repay that leap of faith.
We're taking care to make this book worthy of the 20th anniversary and the talent collected here.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Stretch goals will be revealed a little at a time as the campaign continues. You are welcome to post suggestions in the comments but check out the rest of the FAQ first.
We considered the possibility of getting some of the books autographed but with 30+ artists scattered across the U.S, it's a logistical nightmare that could threaten to delay the release of the book. Even if we did book plates, that package would have to travel in the mail a couple dozen times and even if everyone was able to sign them immediately, we'd still have the perils of loss or damage in the mail system. Frankly, the odds of it working are low enough that we're not comfortable offering it as an option. We'd rather not promise things we can't deliver.
We won't be including any reward tiers for the original paintings. We'd want the artist to get at least an 80% cut and that would completely skew the math of when this project is funded and when stretch goals are met. It's just not the same dynamic as a project run by one artist.
Every piece of art that's shown comes with a link to the artist's website (or other social media if they don't have a site). You can contact them directly for originals and know that no one else is taking a cut of the artist's money!
There's no need to stretch goal any of the artists. We're waiting on artists to deliver art and we won't confirm they're in the book until we have that painting in hand. Everybody who was around when this game kicked off was approached. A few can't take part, and some are finishing their paintings (hopefully).
The book is about the artists who were there at the beginning. After all, this is about commemorating the 20th anniversary. The cut-off for being part of the book is to have had Magic art in print by the end of 94. P.S. Yes, we love Rebecca Guay's art too but she wasn't one of the original artists. Trust me, she's got plenty of her own cool things in the works.
They are limited. The total number of copies hasn't changed. Some were pulled from one tier to create this new tier. The only thing that increased was your options!
The print run is limited to a number set by Wizards of the Coast so we wanted to ensure that everyone had a shot at getting a copy. As for the Retailer Reward Tier, which offers ten books, that is actually the maximum number of a product that any Reward Tier is allowed to offer, per Kickstarter rules.
The Collector's Edition Sketch Cards are handmade originals and every one is unique. The Standard Edition Sketch Cards are printed copies.
Nope. We're not going to increase the number of original sketches per reward beyond 2. We'd rather ensure more people can get sketch cards than increase the number of originals per person.
We hope to add a few more to the $160 and $220 tiers. We will announce any new stock in an update and give everyone a date and time when they'll be released. Expect at least twelve hours notice.
Nope, sorry. Let's face it, some artists have bigger fan bases than others and we really do not want to overload any of these people. So, to be fair, all Collector's Edition Sketch Cards will be packed randomly with people's orders.
No. They'll be chosen from our favorites among the Collector's Edition Sketch Card images.
If the Standard Edition Sketch Card images are taken from Collector's Edition images, isn't there a chance that I'll get the same image twice?
It's a very slim chance, but yes, it's possible. But remember, you'd own the original of something that everyone else has seen (and many may covet). You have a major collectible on your hands. Think of it as the sketch card equivalent of a mythic rare!
If my pledge level is for more than one book, am I getting more than one set of Standard Edition Sketch Cards?
No. One set is provided per pledge, so the 'Two–Fer', 'Near–Completist' and any other levels offering more than one book will still receive only one set of cards.
Maybe. We'll see how people like the idea first.
If you pledge, even at the $2 level, you automatically receive each update as an email.
You can change your pledge level at any time. After you've pledged, the "Back This Project" button becomes a "Manage Your Pledge" button allowing you to easily switch to any pledge level that has availability.
Nothing. You'll know the same time everyone else does.
