Welcome to the final hours of the project, everyone!
A few pieces of news for our last-minute viewers:
- Our mid-campaign pledge drive was a success, which means all cubed wound tokens in the game will be replaced with upgraded heart-shaped wooden tokens.
- We will be broadcasting a live countdown/'come hang out and talk about whatever' event on UStream this Sunday at 9PM EST (More details forthcoming.)
- Our character artist Hannah Edwards is opening up her schedule to produce some original pieces of art for Sovereignty of Dust's backers. If you have pledged for a copy of the game, simply add $35 to your pledge total and send me a message explaining it is for an artwork commission.
- Please like the official Sovereignty of Dust Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SovereigntyOfDust, where we'll be posting the latest updates and expansion information.
"We used to have a civilization. We used to have a future. Now, all we have left is Dust."
Sovereignty of Dust is a post apocalyptic strategy card/dice game for 2-5 players. Set hundreds of years in the future - after global warfare has torn humanity down to it's foundations. Players take on the roll of one of five factions vying for control of the ruins of a once-great metropolis now known only as "Dust."
Featuring a sandbox day/night system and both free-for-all and team based play. Capture your enemies, meet trade caravans and vicious gun runners, collect useful items and resources in the wasteland, gather intel on your opponents and undertake missions to carve your place in a crumbling world.
Players begin by selecting their faction:
- "The Staten Island Resistance" - A ragtag group of soldiers fighting for what's left of humanity.
- "Brothers of Dust" - Though most would view them as a fanatical cult, the Brothers of Dust see themselves as the only light left in the world.
- "Long Island Greasers" - Bikers influenced by the mentality of mid-20th century anarchist punk rockers. Their only goal is to reduce the city to smoldering ash.
- "Pax Americana" - The scientists and intellects who survived the fall of civilization. They consider themselves true patriots, fighting for the American way.
- "The Ward" - Beneath the ruins of Dust, an army of monstrous human experiments is growing by the day, led by a crazed asylum doctor.
Each faction has a preconstructed deck of cards, and a unique ability. At the beginning of each turn, players will discard any cards they have in play and draw three new character cards to the field of play.
One action may be taken per turn by each of these characters. Actions include:
- Combat against another player's character or a city landmark.
- Scouting the wastelands for supplies, or undertaking a mission on behalf of their faction.
Victory points are awarded for capturing enemy units, conquering landmarks, and completing missions in the wasteland. Once the day/night deck has been depleted - the player with the most victory points wins the game!
"Sovereignty of Dust" contains:
65x Unique Character Cards (+13 with Stretch Goals)

Over the past two years I've been polishing the edges of this game to the best of my ability. There is no large team behind this project - no huge company with easy access to distribution and visibility. Once the game mechanics had come together, we playtested at a kitchen table. Then, we playtested some more. Many versions of prototypes... and many long nights spent laughing, tearing down ideas, and building brand new ones. I hired an artist, and taught myself Photoshop as best I could.
Now, I need your help. I've invested my own money in the design work, prototyping, artwork and many other associated costs of getting this game created and tested. I'm looking for funding to cover the cost of printing, packaging, shipping, and independently publishing Sovereignty of Dust.
With your support, we can make this game a reality!
In the video below you will find 30 pieces of character art corresponding to a pledge level for the project.
If pledged, the backer and I will work in collaboration to thematically name the character. You can name it after yourself (first or last name), a loved one, or you can use a name of your own creation.
For example, if your name is Alex Stone - the character could be named Alex, or Stone, or "Rickard", "Theros", etc. However, names like "XxDarkAngelxX" or "OrangeCrayon134" do not thematically fit the game, and are not acceptable. If you have any questions before you pledge feel free to contact me at PatrickMLan@Gmail.com
Please note: The pledge reward tiers seem to sometimes reorder themselves on the project page. Just double check that the pledge you've chosen corresponds to the character # in the video and everything will be fine.

Having this game manufactured within the United States has been very important to me from the beginning of the publication process. Thus, the game isn't as cheap to print as it would be with an overseas distributor. Though I firmly believe it is worth the expense.
The majority of the money will be going towards production, shipping, recouping the cost of the artwork, and Kickstarter and Amazon will also be taking a cut. Most of the money I'll be making will come from the optional higher-tier pledge levels. However, just seeing the game published would be a dream come true for me. It isn't about the profit.
Risks and challenges
I am committed to bringing the best gaming experience to you as I can. Countless hours have been channeled into the effort of polishing the edges and sourcing the right distributor for this project. I've taken as much care as possible to minimize the risk to you, the backers, as I can. That being said, there are always issues that could arise:
Delivery Date - Currently, we're shooting for copies of the game to be in backers hands by February 2015. There are always unforeseen issues that may arise that could potentially delay the delivery of the game. In the event that this occurs I will strive for 100% transparency with my backers on when exactly they will be receiving their product, and what I'm doing to resolve any issues. Having been in the tabletop gaming scene for many years, I know that accountability and building trust within the community is a key aspect of being a successful designer.
First Project - As this is my first Kickstarter campaign, there may always been more efficient ways of running/doing things that I will inevitably be oblivious to. Despite my attempts to be as involved in the process as possible, there certainly exists the risk of something not running quite as cleanly as it could. With that said, I'm very familiar with e-commerce and deadlines and will do everything within my power to mitigate any issues that may arise.
Finally, there always exists the risk of a natural disaster of some kind to strike either the distributor in Wisconsin, or myself in Kentucky. These types of events are well outside of my realm of control. However, in the event of such an occurrence I will do everything I can to deliver the product to you and maintain 100% transparency into the issue.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
