Help fund the Breast Portrait Project's first solo exhibition in NYC!
Clarity Haynes, Radical Acceptance: The Breast Portrait Project is scheduled for February 12 - March 5, 2011 at Tabla Rasa gallery in Brookyn, NY.
Historically, the painted portrait signifies privilege, beauty, and social power. I choose to portray women’s real bodies, which are often invisible in this culture. The time and attention to detail inherent in the portrait process make the intrinsic statement that this body is beautiful and worthy.
At its core, the Breast Portrait Project is about transformation and social change. This is where you come in! You can help bring this work to a much wider audience than ever before. Audrey and Joseph Anastasi, directors of Tabla Rasa gallery, have generously offered their gallery space. A 2010 Community Arts Regrant Award from the Brooklyn Arts Council and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs has provided a baseline of support. Now, in order to make this amazing exhibition opportunity a reality, we need to raise more funds for the publication of the exhibition catalogue and for framing.
The FEBRUARY 12, 2011 Tabla Rasa opening will feature:
1. A free, public panel discussion on the topic, "The Feminist Breast: Women, Nudity and Portraiture," featuring distinguished critics, curators and artists.
2. Thirty paintings and works on paper ranging in scale from miniature to monumental.
3. Video footage from a documentary in progress about this project, directed by Martha Shane.
4. A full color exhibition catalogue featuring an essay by art critic Beth Gersh-Nesic of the New York Arts Exchange.
Twenty percent of catalogue sales will be donated to Gilda's Club NYC, an organization which creates welcoming communities of free support for everyone living with cancer – men, women, teens and children – along with their families and friends.
I appreciate your taking the time to look at this page and watch the video, and hope you will consider contributing what you can! Even small amounts will add up to help us meet our goals. And even if you can't contribute, please pass this information on to others who may be interested. With your help, we will create a powerful, accessible and beautiful exhibition of feminist art in Brooklyn this February.
