WHAT’S THIS ALL ABOUT THEN?
BEAST is a little gothic fairytale – the story of three generations of women dealing with the aftermath of divorce. When Alice’s mother, Grace, tells her that her father’s a “beast,” she begins to question who or what she really is.
We’re going for something along the lines of Pan’s Labyrinth meets Terms of Endearment – a sprinkling of magical realism mixed with a family drama.
We shot the bulk of the short film last year and headed back for one day in January. We were lucky enough to be supported by Creative England’s Emerging Talent scheme, which got us through the bulk of the shoot but now find ourselves in post production with our credit cards maxed out, desperate to finish our little movie.
WHO ARE YAS?!

MORE IMPORTANTLY… (OUR CAST)
We were lucky enough to work with three gob-smackingly brilliant actresses...
GRACE - Billie Piper
Billie Piper recently wowed audiences with her performances in Yerma, for which which she won the Evening Standard & Critics Circle Awards for "Best Actress ". She has also just been nominated for an Olivier Award. Her recent film and TV credits include City of Tiny Lights, Penny Dreadful and Doctor Who.
PENELOPE - Sinéad Cusack
Sinéad Cusack is a two-time Tony-award nominated actress and former winner of the Evening Standard and Critics Circle Awards for Best Actress, and the Irish Film and Television award for Best Supporting Actress. Her numerous film and television credits include: V for Vendetta, North and South and Eastern Promises.
ALICE - Poppy Polivinick
She may be only seven but Poppy can certainly hold her own on set. Poppy’s previous experiences include The Nest, acting alongside Vicky McClure, and the TV Series Man Up. A star in the making, Poppy blew us all away with her performance and heroic, humbling professionalism.
From our mega talented DoP Patrick Meller (Best Cinematographer at the MVA's, nominated at Camerimage), to our Production Designer Extraordinaire Polly Davenport - we were blessed with an insanely talented crew. We’ll be updating y’all about the others in the not-too-distant. Watch. This. Space.
SO WHAT DO YOU NEED OUR MONEY FOR???
I know, right?! We’ve already shot the film… what could we possibly need? Well, we may have had to obliterate our collective credit cards to get us through the shoot. We weren’t expecting to have to pay for that final day. But going forward… we’re lucky enough to be pulling in favours from wonderfully generous folk all over the place but could really use some help to take this movie to the proverbial next level. So… some examples of where any money would be going:
EDITING – We’re lucky enough to be working with Matthew Gray (This is England 90 among others) and would love to be able to pay him for a little more of his time – even at an extremely generously reduced rate.
MUSIC – The big one. The missing link – capable of elevating our little film and taking it beyond low-budget amateur status. We have a terrific composer and music editor helping us, Yann McCullough, who’s music editor credits include teeny films you’ve probably never heard of like Spectre, Ex Machina and Brooklyn. We’d absolutely love to be able to have him record with a big ol’ orchestra. And we’d love a little extra dosh for a cripplingly expensive music license or two.
ANIMATION – So… we don’t wanna spoil anything for you but we do have a little animation sequence in the film – or we will do, if we’re successful here. We’re very proud of spotting our director of animation, Jac Clinch, whilst he was still studying at the National Film & Television School. He’s since been Bafta-nominated, and we’d love to be able to give him the time and tools to make something really special, that we think will really enhance the film.
Course, there’s loads of other bits and bobs, and we’ve been bowled over (as they say) by our collaborators' generosity, but we don’t wanna give you an essay to digest so we’ll leave this at that.
Risks and challenges
Risks? Challenges? Pffff…We hope there aren’t any on the horizon. We just really want to make the best movie possible. That would be nice, wouldn’t it?Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
