About this project
Success is good!
Slide Ridge Honey has been producing, bottling and selling our unique Honey Wine Vinegar for the past two years. Invariably, when people taste it, their first comment is, “Wow!” generally said with wide eyes and a big smile!
Sweet and smooth, with a delicious honey flavor, Our Honey Wine Vinegar is unlike any other vinegar you have ever tasted. We sip it straight, and love it! And now we have a new flavor! Made from raw honey and fresh, Utah apples, our Harvest Apple Honey Wine Vinegar has a rich, complex flavor with incredible culinary possibilities!
As more people taste our unique vinegar, more people want to buy it. We are bottling it as fast as we can, but we need your help to bring in some equipment so we can bottle it faster and fill orders for both products.
What is Honey Wine Vinegar?
We hear this question frequently. Simply put, Slide Ridge Honey Wine Vinegar is vinegar made from honey. That’s it, just honey (or, in the case of our Harvest Apple, it is made from honey and apples). It is a fairly simple, two-step process, based on traditional all-natural methods.
We start by making a high-quality honey wine (mead). We age the wine, and when it is just right, we introduce natural bacteria, known as “mother.” These bacteria convert the alcohol to acetic acid, which is vinegar.
It took us seven years to develop and perfect our process, and it takes 18-24 months to create a single batch. The end result is not what people expect.
Slide Ridge Honey Wine Vinegar is sweet and smooth. It is still vinegar, but the process brings out the honey and apple flavors and maintains the sweetness for a really unique experience, like a taste of summer sunshine.
How do we use Honey Wine Vinegar?
Honey Wine Vinegar can be used in any recipe that calls for vinegar. However, it does have some uses that stand out. It is great on salads, either by itself or as a vinaigrette (it is delicious on a fresh spinach salad). It is also great in marinades, wonderful on fish or in barbeque sauces. So many uses! I even use it in a chocolate/vinegar cake (it's really good).
What are your pledges used for?
Up until now, we have done all the bottling by hand. It is time to expand our operation and purchase some mechanical bottling equipment. This new equipment will help us fill bottles faster, more efficiently, and more accurately, plus it will allow us to keep up with our projected growth over the next two years!
We have some great rewards outlined for your pledges, including our raw honey, Honey Wine Vinegar, and even opportunities to spend some time with the bees.
The origins of Slide Ridge Honey
Slide Ridge began many years ago with the dreams of an 8-year-old boy, Martin. He wanted to learn about keeping bees and collecting his own honey. He tried to sign up for a beekeeping class at the local university, but they wouldn’t take him – he was too young.
The next year, when the class came around again, Martin asked his mother to sign up and he would come along with her. After much begging and persuading, she agreed, and so did the professor. At the age of 9, Martin built his first beehives with the help of his father.
Martin kept bees up through his late teen years when adult responsibilities began to interfere. His beekeeping lapsed while Martin built a successful floor covering business and started a family, but like all good passions, it resurfaced eventually.
Slide Ridge Honey was officially formed about 10 years ago, and the hives have been steadily growing, along with the business. Today we manage thousands of hives (and millions of bees) across Utah. As the bees and products have expanded, so has the business, currently including Martin, his parents, his four siblings, plus other extended family members in various capacities (and a few friends).
One of the most unique aspects of our small, family-operated business is that Mom still cooks lunch. In fact, anyone who is at the office during lunch time is “required” to eat with us! We have some suppliers and customers who like to make a field trip to the Honey House because they know that if they time it for lunch time, they will get a delicious home-cooked meal too!
On behalf of the Slide Ridge Family, we thank you for your enthusiastic support!
Risks and challenges
Since Slide Ridge Honey Wine Vinegar is already in production and distribution, and has been for the past two years, there is virtually no risk to receiving your rewards. We are excited to share our unique flavor with you.
Once we fund our Kickstarter project, we will order and get the bottler installed. The only delays may be in delivery and installation. If delays are too long, we will continue with our hand-bottling process in order to get your rewards out as quickly as we can.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
