Loulou des Indes: Fabulous kidswear that supports weaving communities in India
Handmade textiles are fascinating. They move and drape with peculiar grace and their colours have a unique intensity and depth. The small variations in their texture remind us of the people who wove them and connect us to them.
Today, mass production and the nearly complete industrialisation of textile manufacturing are threatening weaving communities in India. Villages where weaving used to be a thriving activity are deserted. Centuries-old weaving skills are disappearing and a significant part of the world’s cultural heritage is lost with them.
One way to preserve textile arts is to reintroduce handwoven fabrics into our daily lives. The purpose of Loulou des Indes is to support weaving crafts in India, where I lived for over 10 years, by making beautiful and comfortable kidswear in handwoven fabrics.
Soft and resistant, handwoven textiles are perfectly suited for kidswear. And what better way to introduce future generations to the distinctive qualities of handwoven fabrics than to make experience them for themselves?
A French national, I have lived in Asia for nearly 20 years. Textiles have been my passion for longer than I can remember and during the time I spent in Asia I continuously studied textile arts, learning about weaving techniques and textile history, traveling to villages and meeting weavers to learn about their craft.
To ensure a reliable supply of high quality handwoven fabrics for my project I have built a network of weavers in Indian villages who use traditional techniques to create fabrics for my collections. The textile designs are based on simplified traditional patterns and a modern palette of colours.
To manufacture the collections, I have partnered with a couture atelier with an exceptional level of craftsmanship in New Delhi and together we have started making the first sample collections.
Loulou des Indes’ signature style
The collections combine traditional weaving techniques and my native French style: laid-back, chic and comfortable. I called the brand Loulou des Indes, a playful name that reflects the mix of French and Indian influences it was born from.
The look is unique, festive, colourful. Pieces mix and match effortlessly and are designed so that children have room to move and grow in them. The cuts are roomy, dresses can also be used as tunics and all skirts and pants feature wide elastic bands at the waist. The quality of craftsmanship is of a level rarely seen in kidswear. We take pride in designing and making them well so that customers’ kids and later other kids, can wear them for many years.
For the past seasons I have been selling collections directly and the brand has found a small loyal customer base of parents and children who love Loulou des Indes.
Today, for the business to have a greater impact and be financially sustainable, I need to scale it up. In order to reach a broader customer base, Loulou des Indes must be distributed in kidswear boutiques around the world.
I need your financial support to develop a brand new collection and create a professional lookbook so I can reach out to buyers and convince them to carry the line.
Your contributions will go towards
- the weaving of new fabrics,
- the making of a new sample Loulou des Indes collection of kidswear,
- the photography of the collection by a professional kidswear photographer and a professional stylist
- the creation of an outstanding lookbook, an essential tool when presenting the collection to buyers.
By supporting Loulou des Indes’s Kickstarter campaign you not only get beautiful rewards from our existing collection, you also allow us to bring a new collection to life and present it professionally to international boutiques thus contributing to the preservation of traditional crafts.
Everything is in place to get started: we have made samples of the new fabrics and our weavers are ready to produce them. The new collection is designed and ready to go into production once the fabrics are woven. It features bold patterns and colours and is inspired by Amrita Sher-Gil, an Indian female artist from the 1930s whose life defied conventions.
The lookbook will be photographed by kids photographer Maru Alvarez and styled by kids fashion influencer Peggy Juche. Maru and Peggy create outstanding visuals and know how to convey Loulou des Indes’ story visually.
I have created a database of international buyers and as soon as the photography and lookbook are ready I will be presenting the collection to them, either in person or reaching out to them online.
All that is now required is your financial backing.

Risks and challenges
Loulou des Indes has been setting up its operations carefully over the past five years. Our atelier in Delhi can handle a production of 3,000 pieces per month if required and our partner weavers add more looms and bring in more workers when production increases.
We carefully selected all our partners based on the work conditions they offer, the quality of their production and their reliability. Over the years we have built solid relationships based on trust. Of course there can always be delays in our production if bigger orders take priority or in exceptional, emergency cases but, those cases notwithstanding, we are confident we can handle the production of the new collection and reward pieces at our required quality standards and within the promised timeframe.
Our photographer and stylist have committed to the project and are enthusiastic about it.
I am myself deeply committed to this project that has been my focus for the past 5 years.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
