Elite: Dangerous Alpha Phase 3 Released

The latest phase in the Elite: Dangerous alpha process has been released and we've got a Progress Diary to go alongside it. Here David Braben goes through the technical intricacies of the Coriolis starport Zelada found in Alpha phase 3.

The build itself contains the following key features:

  • Outfit your ship with new modules
  • Upgrade your weapons and repair any damage using the credits you have earned from the locations
  • Clear bounties earned when committing crimes
  • And once you have saved enough credits, you can purchase the most well known ship in the galaxy – the Cobra Mk III, a firm favourite from the Falcon de Lacy shipyards

As with the previous phase your feedback is important to us, please make sure to report any issues through the link provided in the launcher and for more experiential feedback please join in the discussion in the Alpha section of our forums.

The Alpha program can be joined via the Elite: Dangerous online store at

Until next time Commanders...

FYI -- on November 14th 2014, they put in a single sentence in newsletter #49 that implied that they were no longer going to deliver offline support.

In newsletter #50, David Braben clarified that it was a "creative decision", not a technical issue, that was behind their decision not to deliver DRM-free offline support.

The vast majority of refund requests have been denied or ignored for over a month now; from our best efforts to discover, there are only about 20 confirmed refunds.

Where entering the premium phase at the end of May, the other phases will follow after then, although no dates for those have been announced yet.

I haven't been tracking all the news here -- do the folks whose pledge had an Estimated delivery of March 2014 get something soon (or has it already been made available, but I missed it somewhere)?

Watching the radar system I noticed a "ping" like ripple occurring, probably showing the system at work.
Could this not be added to show other ships in range emitting signals such as intercoms, scans etc?

      Awesome. Just pure unadulterated awesome.

That's the rotational assist that is available in some stations, you can also turn it off in the options.

Nice ambience in the interior! I like it!

    8. Anders T.N on March 22, 2014

Prior to entering the station you had to align with the station's rotational speed. How come you no longer had to compensate for this once you had entered the station? Or did i just miss the sound/look of the thrusters firing to maintain control.

      @ SpaceVoyager

In the alpha there is rotational assist, this won't be available in all stations, in fact you can turn it off and give it a try.

I like the extremely simplified physics of landing, I wouldn't want to bother with the real one. Landing in a rotating cylinder would be hard...
Then again, it could have a landing strip all around the cylinder and taxiing roads to the parking slots, much like the airports.

Man what is with the lack of attention this game is getting, it's look absolutely fantastic?!

Roll on first round beta!! This game looks more awesome than I could possibly imagine and its not even finished yet!

    15. Matt Dobson on March 19, 2014

Wow! This game gives me funny feelings! It looks so immerse already. All my wishful thinking at the start of this project is coming true. Great job Frontier!

    16. Zplintz on March 19, 2014

      Absolutely fantastic!

Docking is no where near as tricky (at this station or in a small ship like Sidewinder or the Cobra MkIII) as it was in previous games, but it really is a great feeling to fly down to your pad successfully. (Then to be sucked down inside the hanger to re-equip and repair).

Not managed to get my feet to touch the floor since KS started - much of what is being provided in the alpha is far far better than I have been expecting (although I have dreamed much of it for many years).

Good show Frontier - keep up the good work.

While the landing procedure looks like a fun mini-game (and seems to be less deadly than the original Elite) I guess it won't be that much fun after the 10.000th landing. I hope the good, old docking computer (including the music...) will still be an option.

I'm at a "second round private beta" tier and can't wait to play the hell out of this game!
