Elite: Dangerous Dev Diary #10

Hi everyone,

The latest Dev Diary has been posted, in it David talks about the alpha process so far and what we can expect in the next iterations, it also features some clips from the upcoming second phase focusing on multiplayer combat.

We’re looking forward to encountering all the alpha backers in battle soon!

We’d like to thanks everyone who has participated in the alpha process so far, your feedback has been valuable in improving the game. If you’re in the alpha, but haven’t provided feedback yet, then please do so! We have set up a dedicated area on our forums for alpha feedback on discussions, come visit our forums here:

Many people have asked if there is an easy way to upgrade from the beta program to join the Alpha so we have made this possible through our store. Simply add the Alpha product to your store basket and it will automatically discount the value of the Beta version you have paid for.

This is for the software only and is not affected by any other items you may have pledge for. More information is available in the Q&A for backers on the store.

You can purchase the alpha access in the store here.

We’ll be back soon with more information on the game and it’s progress with the next newsletter, due for release next week.

Until next time Commanders

Devil Khan, Iain Rockliffe, and 27 more people like this update.

      As the alpha backers move on to alpha 2.0, wouldn't it be a generous show of good will to allow beta 1 backers access to alpha 1.0?

      That would also allow you to get close to meeting your estimated delivery date for beta 1. As it stands it looks like the beta phases will both be delivered very late which cannot be good for your overall public image.

      No hopes to implement Mantle drivers in time before release?
      It can gives good boosts in space sims full of ships:…

      You hit your goal, so why not reward people that paid for Beta, with Alpha?

      Seriously, i'm not paying another couple of hundred dollars to help you test something, no matter how awesome that the game might be. Give Beta backers a price of $20 or $30 and i'll happily give you even MOAR money.

      @ amigacooke

      The Mac version is due after the PC version.

      The pricing structure should have been based on the Pledge tier not the price of the reward you already had. I might have 'upgraded' to Alpha for £50 given my pledge was £150 and I might have a spare £50 knocking around now, just. But not another £100. That is a substantial amount to find and the lowest amount you can pay!
      Anyhoo, I'm happy to watch the Youtube vids (although that does make me wanna play it more!) and wait for the Premium Beta that I am entitled to play, once it turns up. :)

      I think an 'upgrade' should have meant upgrade (as in Pledge upgrade), not an extra substantial chunk of money, especially when a lot of us have already put up a lot already to fund the project. I agree it shouldn't work out less than the £200 pledge tier though.
      Anyway its only my opinion, but there you go we're all entitled to them :-)

      I still think the Frontier guys have done a brilliant job so far. Cannot wait to see what the Beta holds. V. Excited for that, and more vids of continued Alpha releases. :-)

      I would have thought the reason the Alpha is so expensive is pretty bleeding obvious. If I had paid hundreds of £s to get to that tier and then someone who just waited could stump up a few quid I'd be livid and it would be bad faith on Frontier Dev's part.

      As for that too many emails comment? What on Earth are you talking about? 1 email a week is too much? I had 250 emails yesterday asking me if I wanted viagra, a bigger "size", or new wife, or money from Nigeria! I'll take 1 interesting email a week from F.D. over that garbage thank you very much.

    7. Anders T.N on January 26, 2014

      @Andrew C
      That may be the reason why the price is so high, but even then using only pounds as a currency makes it a bit insane if you are living in say Poland, Spain, Norway and so on. Even on minimum wage you have to work more than a day here to earn the game (In Norway). To put things in perspective. The current price is 2000+ NOK. I only get 7500 NOK a month in student loans. And that's supposed to pay rent, electricity and food for a month. That leaves me with 500-1000 NOK per month. Now I get that students might not be the target for the alpha, but using only a GBP price is wrong in my opinion since so many European countries have very weak currencies compared to GBP.

    8. Andrew C on January 26, 2014

      @Chris Handley
      I suspect that the Alpha access is so expensive because they don't want to be overwhelmed with irrelevant or misleading stuff. Although hopefully they are also doing testing with random people who have no horse in the game who will spot stuff that others might overlook for various reasons because they have an emotional investment in the game.

      @Juan Rial
      So far they concentrate on delivering Windows and OS X versions. It could be that they return to this question next year after releasing game.

    10. Juan Rial on January 25, 2014

      Same question as amigacooke, but regarding the potential Linux version. It's been awfully quiet on that front other than the vague mention that you'd love to support this and other alternative OSes at the start of the campaign and Michael's private response that it "needs to be investigated".

      Is the possibility of a Linux version on the table now, or has that plan been scrapped altogether?

    11. amigacooke on January 25, 2014

      Can I ask about the Mac version. Will there be any Mac beta versions or will the Mac version only be started after the PC retail version Is released?

      If Alpha was not so costly the game would have had million s of more pounds.

      250 pounds was just too high.

      But can not change now.

    16. Pēteris Krišjānis on January 24, 2014

      @Chris Handley

      Think about it this way - they started 1.5 month ago, and they got tested only one phase of alpha. Still, I don't believe we will see such pause between releases as in January, but there's still 3 major concepts to test. So as I am optimist, I will say beta would start end of the March at earliest.

      I appreciate you don't want to commit to a particular date for Beta, but surely you have some idea how long the Alpha might take (if everything went well)... and so you could say something like "The Alpha will take AT LEAST another 1 month, but quite likely much longer." ?

      That way potential Alpha testers know they will get at least 1 months (or whatever) worth from the Alpha. £100 to £200 is a lot to ask, when the Beta could technically start tomorrow!

    18. Creator Frontier Developments on January 24, 2014

      @ James W. Sarvey

      The time frame for alpha is as long as it takes, there are several major features yet to be tested (as David mentions) so it will be a while yet. Beta will also takes as long as it needs to, out focus is on making the game right rather than on specific dates.

      Can we get an updated timeframe on the alpha and beta? I'm thinking about upgrading to the alpha, but the original timeline says that the first beta is coming in January. I'm assuming that's slipped, which is to be expected and is completely fine, but the length of the alpha is a big factor in deciding whether or not I want to upgrade.

      The game looks amazing so far, and I'm really glad I backed it. I can't wait to give it a shot.

    20. Creator Frontier Developments on January 24, 2014

      Unfortunately there isn't a separate mailing list for release only, you're either subscribed for updates or not I'm afraid.

      I can appreciate that you guys are very active about sharing updates with the backers. I'm sure there are a lot of users who look forward to these updates. However, I really feel that I get way, way too many emails from you guys.

      Is there some way to just be notified when the game is ready? Until then, I really don't want to get any more emails. I don't want to unsubscribe because who knows if I'll be notified otherwise.
