Elite: Dangerous Progress Diary #8

Hi everyone,

In today’s video diary Chris Gregory talks us through the various techniques used to put together the Damocles video as well as discussing how it has helped advance the game. The video also contains some sneak peeks of the latest game build in action.

The latest Elite: Dangerous newsletter has been sent out (#14), if you haven’t read it yet then you can do so here:

An important announcement within the newsletter is that the Backers App will be closing on Friday 6th December, please make sure to read the newsletter for more details. After this date pledges can be added or upgraded, although a new Frontier store will be available.

The other big news on the horizon is the upcoming delivery of the first alpha test build, again you can find more details in the latest newsletter.

Thanks for reading.

Until next time Commanders...

The Frontier Team

Having been there right from the start (ELITE on a C64 in 1984, good times!), I am pleased to see Braden finally realise his vision --and do it so well!

      Furry dice must happen, BTW.

    4. ThomasN on November 29, 2013

      seriously. no trackir. wtf!?

    5. Terry Walton on November 29, 2013

      Nice update.

Like many cannot wait for the Alpha to start now.

    6. Senekha on November 29, 2013

Very nice update, very informative. Thanks!

    7. ovi on November 28, 2013

this is great, all coming together so nicely...
keep up the outstanding work guys.

    8. Johannes Musikant on November 28, 2013

Man, you could release a rubbish space shooter with this kind of immersive cockpit view and it would sell already. It's looking awesome!

Thank you for these glimpses on what you are working on!
But please mind that not everyone is keen on motion blur, hdr, dof and other graphical stuff, please do keep all these features optional - and please do not forget Antialiasing (one that really does work, MSAA, f.ex.) ans Anisotropic filters!

    10. Lee Paxton on November 28, 2013

Absolutely spectacular, I love how it's coming along so far.

    11. Luca on November 28, 2013

A question: have you decided about the sound in space thing? There'll be an option to enable realistic (no sound from outside) space exploration?

    12. Luca on November 28, 2013

      A M A Z I N G work!
I love all light effects in the cockpit and glass details (frozen, scratched etc.). Can't wait...!

    13. Commander Keith [@mistertricker] on November 28, 2013

Thanks for that TFG. I may have to get that processor upgrade after all!!! We'll see when the final game is released. Interesting that a DX11 GPU is not required.

    14. Space Monkey on November 28, 2013

Yes, I'm also glad to see that you're using good joysticks to test the game. I'm using a X-52 Pro, same as in the video, and it's not always supported well by games which assume that a xbox controller is the standard (I'm looking at you X-Rebirth...).
It will be great if you support typical simulation hardware (pedals, track IR etc)

    15. Spycraft Studios on November 27, 2013

Great update! Really sells the immersion of the cockpit. Good to see a HOTAS setup focusing on the feel of piloting.

    16. Space Monkey on November 27, 2013

Great update! It's good to see some ingame footage, and by the look of it the development is going well!

    17. TFG on November 27, 2013

Loved this video. And seeing the bobblehead on the dashboard made me smile :)

    18. TFG on November 27, 2013

For the alpha build (higher than released game), minimum specs from Michael are:

To play the first build released in December we're currently looking at the following:

      Direct X 11
      Quad Core CPU ( 4 x 2Ghz is a reasonable minimum)
2 GB System Ram (more is always better)
DX 10 hardware GPU (my reasonably low end machine has a GTX 285 with 2GB)

    19. Commander Keith [@mistertricker] on November 27, 2013

This really is looking amazing. Too amazing for my PC perhaps? WHat's the latest on system specs from the forum chatter? I really can't be bothered trawling through there.

    20. Dan Ormond on November 27, 2013

This looks absolutely fantastic :D Can't wait to have a go myself! Great work guys!!

    21. Cmdr Noogillim of "The Lamentation" on November 27, 2013

More importantly who is the bobblehead in the cockpit modelled on????????

    22. Styggron on November 27, 2013

      That was just spectacular...........absolutely amazing.................

    23. ThomasN on November 27, 2013

How is the guy 2 minutes in not wearing a TrackIR?

    24. Seb on November 27, 2013

Wow, the in-game footage looks very, very good.

I bet, those fluffy dice will be an in game purchase only. If that is the case I cannot wait for the update to walk around as I can then board enemy ships so that I can steal one.
Hopefully they come in any colour you want as long as it is pink :)
In all seriousness, that is a great update - well done.

    26. Richard Morris on November 27, 2013

Love the red function keys on the keyboard. Nostalgia or what?

    27. Synchromesh on November 27, 2013
