Elite: Dangerous Dev Diary #6

Hi everyone,

Michael here with the latest Kickstarter update to introduce David's sixth dev diary video. In this diary David provides commentary on the Capital Ship Battle video we released recently to announce the in-game composer. If you haven't watched the video yet then you really should check it out, the music is great! (You can see the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VE8B4KptyVI). In this dev diary David talks about the process we followed and how it has helped to advance development of the game by putting the video together.

David also recently gave a talk at TEDx about procedural generation called 'Rules Can Be Beautiful', you can watch a video of his talk here: youtu.be/GEVutbSqBI0

As mentioned in the last update we'll also release an art diary breaking down the art side of the video in more detail in the next few weeks.

In other news the latest newsletter will be released in the next few days, we've re-synced the newsletter releases so that they correspond with the video releases.

Things are as busy as ever on our forums, if you've backed the game and your reward includes Private Backers or DDF access then make sure to pay a visit and get involved with the discussions. Last week saw a new feature start in the Private Backers forum, it's called 'Peek of the Week' and each week we'll provide a new piece of art or a screenshot of the latest cool asset or feature in game.

Thanks as always for reading and remember that you can still back the game via our website: http://elite.frontier.co.uk

This live action short film made by the Eranin People's Film Board does an amazing job of putting an intriguing story behind a simple in-game mission. It perfectly captures the mood of Elite Dangerous and we applaud everyone involved for their brilliant work. We know we're not alone when we say that we'd love to see more.

      • The Engineers Update
      .
Earlier this week we put out a server update that brought some requested changes to the game.

Local news articles were added at the Engineers bases to help direct players to locations where they are able to source the materials they need. In addition we increased the amount of materials you can hold from 600 to 1,000 and increased the amount of Data you can hold from 200 to 500 units.

Alongside these changes we also made some adjustments to the requirements to unlock a couple of the Engineers. Specifically, we reduced the required number of rare goods to unlock them down to 50 tonnes. We also adjusted the availability of rare goods in the galaxy slightly, too. States will still change the allocation of rares but the numbers are more favourable than they were.

The development team worked incredibly hard over the recent week’s and are always looking at and reviewing the feedback from the community. There will be an additional point update coming soon which will also include a number of fixes and changes based on feedback from the community. We’ll have some more news on that soon.

@ Michael: Have watched a lot of the alpha testing on YouTube. Epic for an alpha test. One thing that does not work for me in the in cockpit sparks/damage. It looks too much like fireworks of the November 5th type. I would have thought a Blue electrical arcing around the cockpit metal frame would look better. Small point I know but this is the time to point these things out.

As long as the binary stars are "artfully" cleaned up, we should be good to go! It was a sad day when the floppy disk with fixes finally arrived, after weeks of waiting, and that binary system still did not work in Frontier. Hehehe...

You have to wonder though... With all those strange moons found only in our own system, what oddities can possibly lurk out there, that we didn't imagine... the Io of another system, if you'd like. Also: Will there be black holes, or should they be treated as mythical beasts. The stuff of legend only!

      @ Chris Neary

The intention is to continue development beyond the initial release so that we provide updates and expansions. The focus will remain primarily on the core experience of you as a pilot and a commander, however some executive style gameplay is a possible avenue.

      Michael

    10. Chris Neary on

Back in the early eighties there was a game called tradewars 2000. It was played move by move on fidonet.
I look forward to the release of this game, but want to develop my own planet. Trade with ships, invade other planets, orbital bombard an enemies planet.

I know that kitchen sink development is wrong but continuous development is not. Other games such as guildwars proves that.

Its pretty obvious that there are a few people out there who want this to suceed, but after this will we have to wait ten years for a follow up?

    11. Chris Neary on

      Carrying on from syncromesh.
The impact of the broadside would cause the ship to list. Impacts of physical objects should deflect the path of the target vessel causeing a momentary loss of control where beam weopons should not.

    12. Synchromesh on

PS....Once the ship is hit and it breaches the like it did in the video....Would it not be possible that the blast of escaping oxygen may just make the ship tilt to the side..... ?

    13. Synchromesh on

You guys must be so pleased with the outcome so far...I just cant wait to play it !!

Loved the video. I know it was a very scripted event and propably not like anything we will see in-game. But i really loved it either way.

The dialog in the intro when he accepted the call for assist and he came out of hyperspace and said "I bring friends" is probably one of the best sci-fi moments I have seen in ages. It rivaled even the best of television productions. Even the slightly cheesy weapons free was an excellent choice.

      @Porcupine
"PG worlds still need to be seeded with lore, unique locations and artifacts and quests..."

So essentially problem is that you *know* that those worlds and potentially locations and missions there are generated? If you wouldn't, that would make them uniqe?

PG is anything but generic. Handcrafted item can be generic (see all platformers or movie license games). So I think you apply wrong term here, however you are right about some challenges to PG as a tool.

    18. Missing avatar

      Chris Ainsley on

+Porcupine I think lore is very possible to be PG, it doesn't need to be created manually, but of course, ED is taking the hybrid approach anyway. There will be likely several hundred manually seeded systems in addition to the hundreds of millions of entirely procedurally generated systems. With manual seeding, then our solar system cannot be recreated in its full glory, nor can the established macro-level story fit in.

I also disagree with your example of snow. It's perfectly possible to generate snow procedurally, but only have it occur as say perhaps a 0.1% probability (snow is perhaps not the correct example for such a weighting). A good PG universe has rules which are very common but that are instantiated differently each time in addition to rules which are triggered very infrequently, perhaps one time in a million.

But, with enough PG systems in place, you can PG very complex lore and very complex geometry and fool the player into believing that the world is fully crafted. Of course, there will be repetition, as there is even in the real world, but I dispute that PG necessarily creates generic stories. It's all down to how clever it is, and how PG interacts with the players own past choices (in an ideal game, the universe simulates the impacts of players past choices over time and those changes ripple out over the PG).

    19. J.L. on

This will be so much fun to play with my better half, can't wait to fly around together -- and then later on, even walk together! (c:

    20. Porcupine on

Yes, well, if we're talking about procedural generation not having a catch, I think we're really ignoring the elephant in the room: PG is generic. Sure, it can create environments as varied as the sample size you embedded in the rules, but nothing outside it - and everything you teach it do you'll see again and again and again.

This is of course a lesser problem for things that are _supposed to be_ fairly generic like geography - as long as you embed soil and sand and water and rocks in the rule-set, it can vary them pleasingly ad infinitum - but it will never generate snow unless you explicitly include that too, and then you'll start seeing it regularly - it would not make sense to include snow in the rules but restrict it to appear on one single planet: that would no longer be procedural generation but merely scripted modeling of one-offs.

And the problem with that is that these sort of environments are barren from an exploration perspective - once you've seen a small but representative sample of them, you've seen them all - even though they'll all be unique, no environment you'll ever come across ever will contain anything new; and that kinda kills the mood.

Of course, what nature does is much the same thing - it's PG on cellular and molecular level, therefore it achieves incredible diversity - but we have no hope to emulate that kind of level of detail any time soon, so IMHO maintaining true diversity still requires manual creation of one-off assets. Otherwise, what you end up is like the game Noctis - gorgeous, sure, but boring after a few surface EVAs: you know there's nothing new left to discover in that universe, you'll never land on a planet that will somehow have a buried ancient temple, or an abandoned space port, or an unknown species of plant or animal.

Of course, that doesn't matter too much where PG only supplies the background, and exploration is not the point of the game. But whenever it is, PG worlds still need to be seeded with lore, unique locations and artifacts and quests... manually. It's the same problem of conceivably being able to write a script that will generate a typical pulp space adventure, but not one that will generate "King Lear". And that really is the problem - crafted worlds are limited, PG worlds are generic...
