Update #31 - Shields Dev Diary

Hi everyone,

I'd like to echo David's statement from the previous update and offer a huge thank you to everyone for their support. As I write this the pledge total is over £1,339,000 and we have well over 22,000 backers. These are simply amazing numbers, so thank you again.

In this update we have a new dev diary discussing ship's shields:

We've also had a busy day for press, I've included a few of the links below:

The Inquirer:

Book News

Gollancz have announced that they have purchased three of the writer's packs:

Today's book shouts go out to Andre Czausov's Supermassive, he has has only 6 hours left on his project so please go and support him here:

The other shout out is for C L's Elite Chronicles, she has less the 23 hours to go and you can support her project here:

So thank you everyone for your support and I'll be back tomorrow with another update.

Looks like we'll be needing more stretch goals. :)

      Wow according to the inquirer

"If funding for the game beats its £1,250,000 funding target by a reasonably significant amount, another £250,000, ten more shops will be added to the game and a Mac version will be produced."

Soooooo what kinds of shields and weapons will these "shops" have ? :-)

I'd vote for a Versace shop so I can pimp my ship in tiger print and gold trim ;-)

Excellent news - Glad to see that the initial pledge target resoundadly broken - it had looked touch and go just before Christmas.
Really looking forward to playing the completed game on release - will be a trip down memory lane.
I remember in 1984 making a 2 hour journey to Leicester ( for some reason it was Mecca for several big dedicated PC shops) just to gawp with the other crowds at Elite being played on a BBC Micro; amazing - So easily pleased in those days, eh!? Not being able to afford the BBC micro, I saved up for a C64 and tape deck (No credit cards in those days, so 2 months wages £400!!). I held of buying Elite until I saved up for a Commodore 5.5" Floppy Drive (the size and weight of a breeze block - dimension wise it was heavier and bigger than the C64!), so loading was so much quicker, plus i could save my game too (Not sure if there was a 'tape' version ?)
Having watched Davids' update #32 regarding ship 'Shields' - and how they might look in-game - I'm interested to know if he or his 'production' team have plans to put to ask the almost 25K 'Backers', what their prefs might be? Not just for the shields - but for other aspects of the game as well. Conscious that I'd never expect the game to be designed via 'committee' - but it might make sense to ask some of the 'backers' which are their preferred choice for some of the design ideas / goals etc upfront. By the very act of backing the development with our own money, it demonstrates our commitment and loyalty to the production of Elite Dangerous. Appreciate, that each of us have our own prefs and dislikes etc, but perhaps the design team could offer us an opportunity to provide some 'valuable' feed back to their ideas - game goals and visuals etc. I've pledged sufficient to be involved in the Beta and Alpha testing - but by then i guess, most of the game fundamentals will be in place. Like i said - I'm not advocating game design by committee (we know DB went the KS route to have full control of game design and production etc), but perhaps more involvement feedback from the 'Elite D - backers community, might pay dividends and shape the game to everyones' advantage.

I don't think I've ever been this excited about any game ever

    8. zexpe on January 4, 2013

I've now more than quadrupled my pledge - looking forward to seeing my favourite ships from Frontier re-imagined for Elite: Dangerous now; the Adder, Osprey Attack Fighter, Asp Explorer, Tiger Trader, Lion, Puma Clipper, Panther Clipper and of course, the Imperial Trader and Courier!

    9. Walt Newhouse on January 4, 2013

In case of adding (physical) pledge upgrades do I have to add *another* 15 pounds shipping (outside UK)? As I already included 15 pounds on top of my original pledge for the premium box. In other words, will items be combined? 30 pounds is getting a bit steep for delivery to Holland. Sorry if this has already been answered. Couldn't spot it.

If there is a OSX port, there is no good reason not to make a linux port, if taken into consideration from the start, the code for both platforms should be nearly identical.

    11. Dmitrie on January 4, 2013

Mr. Braben, what do you think about Linux support? It's not that hard as iOS/Android porting, because Linux is commonly used on the same type of machines as Mac OS.

You won't have to re-write graphics code heavily, as Linux uses almost the same OpenGL libraries as in OSX. The 99% of desktop Linux users have x86 compatible processors, by the way :)

Can we hope for such sign of good will from you?

P.S. Linux users have Steam now, so you won't have problems with distributing your game at all :)

      Thanks a lot!

@shannon smith - liked your ideas about panels and colours. On that subject, ive been thinking about the decals that your ship is painted with. A darker ship would be more camoflaged against a space background, however would be less reflective of a laser strike.

Braben and Bell were my gaming heroes back in the 80's.
It would be great if Bell was able to contribute to the development of this new version.

      £2 million stretch goal anyone?

    20. Kelvin Price on January 4, 2013

I loved this game when I was young and spent hundreds of hours on my BBC becoming an Elite millionaire. I only just found out about this kickstarter today and even though I'm out of work at the moment, made a small pledge instantly. I had just about given up on ever seeing Elite IV. Now I can't wait for it :)

Apologies if these questions have been asked, but I haven't had time to read all the comments and the FAQ just yet, been reading all the updates and watching all the videos.

Is the digital download an ISO image or an .EXE ?
Will there be any models/kitsets of ships available ?

    22. Ian Davies on January 4, 2013

Is there some more info on what will actually constitute the 'Mac' version, now that it's funded? I'm not a huge gamer these days, and therefore my experiences may not be typical, but every game I have (Portal, Half Life 2, Starcraft 2 etc.) runs faster under Bootcamp as a native Windows game than the native Mac version running under OS X on the same hardware.

    23. Creator Frontier Developments on January 4, 2013

      @ Davor Granic

You are likely to receive some shield or hull damage passing through a shield, but while that is enough to destroy missiles or projectiles it is not enough to take out a ship.

    24. Creator Frontier Developments on January 4, 2013

      @ Julian

Yes, if you're receiving a physical reward you need to pay shipping if you are outside of the UK.

    25. Creator Frontier Developments on January 4, 2013

      @ Bromley86

You can elect not to receive physical good.

    26. Creator Frontier Developments on January 4, 2013

      @ william heimiller

There are no plans for charging subscriptions.

    27. Bromley86 on January 4, 2013

@Julian/Gerald. What Stingray said. Tier prices do not include postage, so you will have to add £15 if you want the physical rewards from previous tiers shipped outside the UK.

Anyone selecting £60 tier or higher needs to consider this. I haven't seen them confirm that you can elect to not receive physical goods (say if you want access to the 1st beta but are happy downloading your game), but I'd be amazed if this was not the case.

    28. Aurelien Dhermy on January 4, 2013

What about changing the skin of the shield depending of the type or "brand" of shield equipped?
Imagine brands of products like in Borderlands (Jakob, Tediore, Dahl) for example could be a good idea.

Just woke up to see the Mac stretch goal reached. Well done!

    31. s4ingray on January 4, 2013

@Julian - As far as I understand it, you always have to add shipping if you want physical content. Also, certain items that will need to be shipped later for obvious reasons (they will be done later) also require payment of additional shipping fees. I read somewhere on the main blog that the £85 pledge level gives you the option to get the game box and thus you'll need to add £15 for shipping.

Great to know this game is going to be made and I feel privileged to be a financial backer. Elite had a huge influence on my childhood, developing my interest in games, computing and astronomy - you could say it made me the nerd I am today.

Speaking of nerds; I'm using Linux (Ubuntu distro to be specific) - any chance of a Linux stretch goal?

    33. Dusty on January 3, 2013

I think its was safe to say that "we were all anxious" & delighted that the goal was reached =)

    34. Scott Erickson on January 3, 2013

@william - no, it's not a subscription game, although you might have to pay for expansions, depending on your pledge level. I believe 80 pounds and up gives you "all future expansions."

    35. Scott Erickson on January 3, 2013

@ Luke - thanks, I must have missed that update. I'm not trying to rock any boats - I assumed I needed to pledge +15 and had already done so. I know Marc Miller (Traveller 5 RPG) has had some folks complaining about international shipping, even though every pledge level (and the 'manage your pledge') clearly stated they needed to tack it on. I know it's not cheap, and I would rather pay a little extra for shipping and have my entire pledge amount go into development of this game.

    36. Missing avatar

So the question still stands, do you need to add the shipping cost to tiers such as the £85 tier?

    38. Missing avatar

      Julian on January 3, 2013

@Luke Challis. There has actually been no mention of there needing to be postage paid for any of the tiers except for those that have actual physical goods in said tier, unless you get the physical good add-on's for tiers 40 pounds and above.

    39. Luke Challis on January 3, 2013

@Gerald. You have to add 15 pounds in addition to your pledge to have items posted to you. Thats been pretty solidly stated elsewhere (in an update or some such... was no room for misinterpretation)

    40. Shannon Smith on January 3, 2013

I like the idea with multiple shield generators!

I have an idea - what about different panel materials?

Take the cobra Mk III for example - you could have the rear panels (the ones around the engines ect) made of duraluminum as standard off the shelf ship. However, if the ship wasn’t fast enough for you, you would have an option of taking the duraluminum panels out and replace it with carbon fibre (or the space equivalent for example) giving you more speed, but no protection at the rear apart from your shield generators.

If you want more strength, you could go for something heavy duty lime 0- I dunno – military duralumin. So if your shields go down, your hull can take a pounding.

And if you are really lucky and take down a thargoid ship and fuel scoop in some of his ship panels, you could melt it down and make a rear panel out of Thargonium – light as carbon fiber and strong as military duraluminum.

it would make asteroid mining more interesting – rear panel made out of the gold you mined? Not very strong but totally reflective against lazer weapons for example. I also think it would be cool to fly around in a gold plated Cobra Mk III lols.

That way – you could have 2 different Cobra MK III’s – one built for speed to outrun the pirates, and one to stand and fight. Or even just a gold plated one to show off your money to (and be almost immune to some weapons.

just some ideas but it seems good to me!

@Dunk - Yes, official confirmation especially needed within the next 24 hours, as I'm currently on the 85 pound kickstarter level and will be unimpressed to miss out on elements due to it not including postage, about which it says nothing.

@Scott Erickson : I went round the same questions you are now a few days ago. I pointed out the same thing you have, but got an awful lot of generally nice, but occasionally patronising responses (LOL). Every tier from the £60 one onwards with the sole exception of the £80 tier (Digital Download Pack) ships with physical items and if you are outside the UK, you will be charged the £15 delivery charge. It would be great to get official confirmation though.

    43. Missing avatar

Rob Fisher on January 3, 2013

Very nice shields concept. I like that it adds a bit of avionics workload to the defender monitoring the shield status (I'm a fan of combat flight sims like Falcon 4 and DCS), as well as tactical options for the attacker. If you can target separate parts of the ships it implies that combat will be pretty close range and speed differences will be low. I'm still wondering how that will work with plausible physics (I have my own ideas how it *could* be done). Can't wait to find out.

    44. intrepidis on January 3, 2013

If I play as a pirate, how would I be able to tell what cargo a ship has?

    45. Scott Erickson on January 3, 2013

Hmm, unless I'm wrong - there is no "add 15 pounds to ship outside UK" at pledge levels above 90. Can we get a clarification, please? :)

    46. Scott Erickson on January 3, 2013

@Gerald Pfeifer - no, postage outside UK is +15 pounds, no matter your reward level. So personally, I have pledged 165 pounds, and selected the 150 pound reward.

    47. Missing avatar

Gerald Pfeifer on January 3, 2013

OK, thanks, but for the 150 pound tier do you actually need to pleadge 165 pounds, or does the pledge include the postage that would have been necessary at the lower tier?

    48. Spycraft Studios on January 3, 2013

      @Gerald Pfeifer
The way it works is you select the 90 pound tier, but enter the pledge amount as 105 pounds. You add the postage to the tier amount and it is then processed via Kickstarter (and adds to the total for stretch goals).

I've not seen an official answer to this: I live outside the UK. What happens if I pledge 90 pounds: do I get asked separately for the delivery money for the physical box?

What about if I pledge 150 pounds and select membership of the elite: does 15 pounds get taken off for shipping, so I don't get the elite status?
