Update #26 - New Concept Art

Hi everyone,

the uptake for the Elite: Dangerous kickstarter has been amazing. As I write this the total sits at over £1,051,000 and we now have 18,858 backers. Both are incredible numbers and help us get closer to the £1.25 million we need to reach in 6 days time.

So please keep spreading the word, the more backers we have then the easier the target, or even the stretch goal can be reached. If you're holding back in the lower tiers then take a look at the next reward tiers, a modest bump from everyone would also help see us across the goal.

One of the interesting new tier rewards have been the starting positions, these give you a different ship, equipment and credits when you start the game. Does being a pirate interest you? Then the £42 reward tier will help get you started. If like me exploration is your thing then take a look at the £70 tier.

Remember that most reward tiers include many or all of the tiers above it as well.

You can also look at the pledge upgrades, here new items can be added to your pledge. These include concept prints (signed by David Braben, or not signed), we have confirmed that a star chart and ship recognition chart are available.

Today we have a new piece of concept art. This image shows a close fought battle in and around a space station.

If you want to know more or just want to join in the discussion then visit us in the comments. I'm there regularly to discuss the game and answer any questions.

Today's book shout out goes to Sean Curtin's "The Space Farer's Tale", he only has a few days left for his funding so please visit his site and pledge your support:

http://www.indiegogo.com/EliteDangerousTSFT/x/1994942

Remember that helping the book projects also helps the game project as well.

So once again thank you to everyone for your support. We have to make this game and with your support we will.

I will be back tomorrow with another update.

Michael

      Re: different starting positions

I think I only ever started from the default position in Frontier because I only ever started from a default position once. Having multiple save positions meant that if I fancied starting a new game to go off in a different direction then I would just start from an earlier save position and create that new game - saving again in a different slot.

However, it seems like multiple save slots may not appear in Elite: Dangerous because of the evolving universe it is set in. If this is the case then having different default starting positions in Elite: Dangerous is very important - for everyone's enjoyment!

      Re: planetary landings

Reading the descriptions of the planets and their societies in the "gazetteer" view always made want to fly down to the surface and explore the unusual wildlife and features that are described. I can see the impetus for a significant improvement over Frontier on the planetary features and also the potential for a leave-the-ship-and-explore-on-foot mode!

Preaching to the converted re. selling the value for money Zex :) .

On the starts. It's not really pay to win, although I can see how it might be seen as such. To me, real pay to win is something like not allowing people a docking computer unless they pay a $5/month subscription.

I'm not really in a position to convince you. For me, having access to a number of different starts/scenarios is pretty cool, but that doesn't float your boat. Before they introduced those ship tiers, a lot of the feedback was that there wasn't enough value between £20 and £80/£90, although the £50 2nd beta level was pretty tempting.

Their approach to planetary landings has pros & cons. For me, I'm not too bothered what it looks like on the planets, so I'd have been happy with a tidied-up version of FFE planet surfaces. On the other hand, it is heartening that they want to do the planet surfaces right, so I'm personally happy to wait for the expansion.

@Bromley86 I think it perfectly reasonable to expect Frontier Developments to provide a business plan to their investors. You don't go to the Dragons' Den saying you have no idea how much your product will cost. Arguably the £150 figure provides that, but it doesn't break down the game and expansions cost - surely they must how some idea of the number of expansions and break down that went into that figure. If you just want the planetary landing expansion then getting the game for £20 even if you pay full price for the expansion still sounds like a good deal. Maybe if they could list all the expansions that went into that £150 figure, we may start thinking that the £80 pledge is also a good deal.

As for the starting positions, well, that's a minimum £12 increase just to give you a head start in the game - pay-to-win style - and funnily enough, I always preferred the default starting position in Frontier. Talking of which, twenty-years ago Frontier's £35 box set (with a star chart, printed short stories and manual) came with planetary landings and multiple starting positions included. Admittedly I'm not in touch with the latest PC game developments but I remain somewhat unconvinced by the £80 / £90 levels - please convince me further!

I was an Xbox user, only don't have my console as I moved continents 3 months ago, the Xbox market is huge and definitely should not be overlooked.

I will happily admit that ps3 iwas a better console technologically, but I never liked the controller and Xbox has better online gaming to my knowledge.

thxs, yer i do have a PC but prefer to play games on my PS3 plus I would have to fork out around £300 to up grade to a system I can run it on as my PC is over 6 years old and struggles with vista :0( with been on a low wage my option are limited. nice to hear the backer code will be made available if released on to the PS3 by the way I haven't heard from Xbox users about this??? may because PS3 user are older?? LOL I would still desperately want to play Elite on my PS3 LOL.

      LONG LIVE ELITE!!

Might be worth explicitly stating in an update that the PayPal pledges will be added to the Kickstarter ones for stretch goals. (Of course, emphasise that KS pledges are more useful than PayPal ones, at least until the KS target is met.)

    10. Creator Tom OConnell [Blue lights on cop vipers] on December 30, 2012

I've Jontyd to £300 - @Michael - rest assured I'll be pushing for blue lights on the cop vipers in the Design Forums ;-)

Yes, you can pledge via PayPal after the kickstarter closes and is successful.

I have pledged a significant increase, fingers crossed we get there! I am keen for a #mac version, If we don't achieve the #mac stretch is there an ability to keep it going so that it could be included?

    13. Creator Jeff on December 30, 2012

£300 pledged. I'll spare the Elite universe the pain of having a station named after me, lol.

I'm really looking forward to this. Just how much influence will the decision forum members have?

    21. Creator martiz on December 29, 2012

      @ Michael Brookes:
Please include subtitles or closed captions in the videos, especially from the dev diary. The last one doesn't have any of them. Or at least some transcripts.
Reasons: There are people like me who are deaf or hard of hearing and would surely know what's going on and also probably ready to pledge.

    22. Creator Bromley86 on December 29, 2012

This pledge calc might help Clockwork:
      http://elite-dangerous.kicks-ass.net/pledge.php

Only things wrong with it are:

      * It doesn't clearly state how P&P is treated for non-UK orders (assuming you want them, £15 for the boxed game and £15 for anything else, no matter how many upgrades you order) and
      * it links to the Frontier First Encounters Eagle MkII whereas, irrespective of what they call it, the MkIII most likely describes what we'll see in this version of Elite.

    23. Creator Clockwork on December 29, 2012

Would be lovely if you would clarify what is in each package, as it stands currently it makes very little sense - several people I know that is interesting pledging is confused in regards which each tier include as some tiers leave the impression you get less than the above.

    24. Creator intrepidis on December 29, 2012

I think with a game like this they wouldn't need to use the extra SPE cores in the PS3, and therefore that wouldn't be an issue. Actually, if they used one of the modern development engines (like PhyreEngine) then porting the code wouldn't be too hard (and using the SPE's would be easier). The hardest thing would actually be getting all the input functionality to work on a game pad.

    25. Creator Dave Allan on December 29, 2012

Yeah, I agree with you totally, the more formats, the better! PS3 however, is a large undertaking as many things will need re-working (which wouldn't be required to other PC formats, like Mac, Linux, and in most cases, xbox 360), such as input handling, sound, rendering. Code the for PS3 is also very different due to the threading nature of the cell processor. I would love to see E: D everywhere but honestly, go get yourself a PC! I imagine though, that if you pledged here, if it was ported to PS3, your code would work. I believe there's a FAQ entry about that.

    26. Creator izzy on December 29, 2012

@Nick : £150 tier give you premium box.

    27. Creator Martin Hague on December 29, 2012

nextgen console sytem won't be out any time soon maybe 2015? the PS3 cell prosseor is more the capable, have you looked at Last Of Us, GTA 5 or Tomb Raider reboot!! guess not GFX renderring won't suffer that much on the PS3. i want ELITE on PS3 so do my friends. David Braben sed (quote) would like to see Elite on all formats!!!! (un-quote) look i don't care if the PC or PS3 is Better i wan't to play this game on my chosen system. lets us all support Elite longlive Elite.

I would like hear from David on his thoughts!! weather it can or cannot be done, and i would increase my pledge more if Elite will be eventualy releaes on to the PS3. I will buy this game one way or another. would the Backer DLC codes made avialble on PSN??? If released on to the PS3.

    28. Creator Commander Regel on December 29, 2012

@Michael: Like another poster below, I also would be interested in knowing if the a Star Chart and/or Ship Identification Chart will be included. If not, adding both as pledge upgrades would be a useful addition.

    29. Creator light487 - Kickstarter Junkie on December 29, 2012

@Frontier Hi, what I'd really like to see you guys doing with these concept art updates is explore what the concept art means to your project. Sure, we can gawk at the image and imagine what it will be like but you don't make concept art for no reason.. there's a concept there that you are visualising and I think it would be great to hear some detailed thoughts into the concept being visualised.

    30. Creator Dave Allan on December 29, 2012

That's it, I'm having a planet named after me! I was going to up my pledge later on, but since there are only 9 left, I couldn't wait in case I lost the chance of an invite to the release party! I hope everyone comes to orbit my planet and say hi!

    31. Creator Dave Allan on December 29, 2012

@Ribbs. If you look below at the FAQ regarding the Elite Founders, it answers your question, but in short "yes" :-)

    32. Creator Ribbs on December 29, 2012

sorry if this has been asked before, but will there be a badge for reaching Elite? I so desired one when I played Elite on the BBC, I only ever got to Dangerous though.

    33. Creator Nick Havard on December 29, 2012

Does the £150 pledge include the premium boxset, the standard boxset or digital download only. It says all of the rewards above; presumably its premium boxset?

    34. Creator Justin Pinner on December 29, 2012

Another +1 for Linux. And/or Mac.

    35. Creator Commander Halley on December 29, 2012

Personally, I'll be rather miffed if the Premium box doesn't include the ship recognition chart, it epitomises Elite for me - I can still remember the original on my bedroom wall. Fond memories.

As a matter of professional interest, it would be interesting to hear about what infrastructure you're considering for the hosting, how you're going to scale it, what you're doing for high availability/failover, etc. Are you hosting your own infrastructure, or will you use e.g. Amazon? How will you store the state of the universe, the player profiles, etc? Have you considered any concrete technologies such as Cassandra, HBase or other NoSQL solutions, in-memory stores such as Redis or memcached? Perhaps there is a blogpost in this :)

    38. Creator sicose on December 29, 2012

+1 for wanting Linux stretch goal :)

    39. Creator Coz on December 29, 2012

@ Martin Hague: Re the PS3 and consoles in general, I would consider your gaming platform moving forward because the next gen consoles aren't likely to be anywhere near as powerful as a PC and with key figures saying that the next gen games will be delivered on console at 720p and 30fps - that doesn't sound too appealing to me.

    40. Creator izzy on December 29, 2012

@Olle Jonsson : Linux stretch goal will be added if there is a lot of demand.

    41. Creator Olle Jonsson on December 29, 2012

Any chance of a Linux stretchgoal?

    42. Creator Coz on December 29, 2012

@ Tom also bear in mind that the resolution of the kit version is 1280x800.

    43. Creator Coz on December 29, 2012

@ Tom: The Oculus Rift does look exciting especially if it meets the hype. They have said they would like to support other platforms and that includes the VR headset. Personally, I would like to see how it performs before I bought one.

    44. Creator Tom OConnell [Blue lights on cop vipers] on December 29, 2012

@David Freed - Have you had a look at Oculus Rift - It's a 3D VR Headset, a lot of the major games developers are developing games to support it, ordered mine yesterday, I'm hoping E:D will support it ;-)

    45. Creator David Freed on December 29, 2012

@ CL Thanks for the comment... I can save some money if I don't need a super PC. Now, how about a suitable flight control / joystick?
And I would really like multiple monitor / screen possibilities - I want to build a dedicated cockpit, preferably with front and side views permanent, and a sub-window as rear-view 'mirror'. Will E:D have software to support that, I wonder?
As for time, I'm semi-retired. I suppose I'll have to write less. LOL

    46. Creator Bromley86 on December 29, 2012

@zexpe. I've seen nothing official on release prices or expansion prices. I doubt we will either, as it's hard to price something that has yet to be developed.

That said, I have seen Frontier mention that when they were calculating the "correct" price of game+unlimited expansions, they arrived at ~£150. Obviously they realised they'd get few pledges for an unmade game at that level, hence the £80 price tag. Don't forget to factor in the value to you of the new ship starts which, as they're free to Frontier, weren't considered in the above calc.

Although a different pricing model, it looks like EVE costs £90 for 1 year.

    47. Creator Frontier Developments on December 29, 2012

      @ Richard Harrison

      That's fair comment.

RE: Star Chart and Ship Recognition Chart in Premium Box... Even if they are then they will be folded up (to fit in the box) whereas the prints will be better quality and unfolded. It perhaps doesn't make a difference to some but it does if you want to frame them etc.

    49. Creator Coz on December 29, 2012

@ Alan it does say 'This includes all the rewards above'

    50. Creator Frontier Developments on December 29, 2012

We will be looking into other platforms, but we need to finish the Windows PC version first - and the Mac version if we hit the stretch goal.
